It’s a six-minute drive to the centre of Raglan where you can explore castle ruins, pop in to one of the cosy pubs or stock up at the traditional butcher and the local village shop. Further afield you’ll find the charming market town of Monmouth a fifteen-minute drive away. The home is blissfully quiet, with nothing but the occasional bleat of sheep or whinny of a horse in the surrounding fields. Out here, away from it all, you can see the canopy of stars from the private garden. During the day, this spot is perfect for a family barbecue, with dining on the patio. Inside, it’s open-plan living made cosy with a wood-burning stove set in the old stone wall of the living room. Period features like the old timber frame and arrow-slit windows have been retained, showing off the age of the building. The Aga and Belfast sink in the kitchen keep that farmhouse feel, perfect when paired with farm-fresh produce from the hole-in-the-wall farm shop just down the road.

Get off the beaten track at this remote retreat set deep within the Herefordshire countryside, close to the Welsh border. Originally the farm's dairy, it's been lovingly converted from a derelict outbuilding to stylish home from home in just a few short years.

Inside, discover a cute contemporary farmhouse style, with beautiful natural stone flooring, a sleek kitchen and an inviting seating area placed within warming distance of the wood burner.

Step through to the bedroom, where you'll find a comfortable bed with a skylight above, perfect for stargazing, and an elegant freestanding bathtub for indulgent evening pampering sessions.

The star of the show has got to be the wood-fired hot tub, with views across to the Monnow Valley. Spend your days hiking through the hills with your dogs, before hosing them down at the outside tap and jumping into the warm water – we can't help but feel that the dog's getting the raw end of the deal here.

Speaking of walks, there are plenty of public footpaths that pass across the farm, with your hosts able to provide OS maps and walking books should you need them. If you want to venture further afield, why not head up the Skirrid, Sugar Loaf and Black Mountains – all viewable from the garden.

Say fare thee well to your regular life – it's time to live out your knight's tale fantasies at this extraordinary Medieval manor house. This home dates back to the twelfth century and was even owned by Henry VIII a couple of centuries later. As soon as the moment you step through the gigantic wooden door, you'll feel like you've stepped back in time. 

You’ll have access to the first and second floor of the home, which are packed with historic charm and traditional details. We love the spiral staircases and narrow corridors leading to cosy corners and antique furniture. Exposed stone walls and dark timber beams add to the characterful decor of this memorable home. The master bedroom features a wood-carved four-poster bed with intricate artistry, and a roll-top bath in the nearby bathroom. 

In the kitchen, it's easy to imagine the cooks of yesteryear bustling about the hearth while preparing a banquet for the Lord of the house. Happily, things are a little easier these days – there’s now a beautiful farmhouse kitchen with a range cooker. When you’ve whipped up a feast fit for a king, it can be served at the nine-foot table, where you’ll sit until late sipping wine and catching up. 

The Wye Valley is on your doorstep with its crumbling castle ruins, Arthurian landmarks, and quiet market towns. A ten-minute walk takes you into Caldicot centre, buzzing with cafes, shops and a handy train station. Yet the manor's sprawling grounds and walled rose gardens make it feel as though you’re away from it all.

This barn has been lovingly restored into a stylish home. We adore the Usk Valley vistas from the patio windows, and if you look up, you get a view of the sky through the glazed ceiling. 

The impressive living space is perfect for entertaining your family and friends. There's plenty of room on the two comfy grey sofas for your guests and a selection of books and games to keep the gang occupied. Whip up some Welsh rarebit for lunch in the modern kitchen with its island, or head outside and grill some local produce on the barbecue. Later relax in the hot tub with a glass of wine or next to the toasty fire pit.

There's lots to do out and about, too. Llandegfedd reservoir, with all its watersports, great fishing, walking and cycling, is just over 1 mile away, while the charming market town of Usk has many independent boutiques and several cafes and restaurants (2.2 miles from this home). This delightful holiday home is the garden wing of a fabulous Italianate-style villa that dates back to around 1670. Now a comfortable and modern space, this home delights guests and proves to be the perfect base for exploring the nearby Forest of Dean. 

The villa has been a B&B for forty years, and the garden wing is now available for self-catered stays – it’s ideal for groups of friends or a couple of families getting together for a break. Spend your days out in the fresh air, and your evenings in the wood-beamed living room, playing board games and catching up. 

The Forest of Dean is just a short distance away – you can be at its heart in fifteen minutes. There’s so much to see and do, whether you’re a keen hiker, will be bringing your bikes, or are entertaining little ones. Puzzlewood is seven minutes away by car, and you might even recognise some parts of the Forest from TV and film. 

You can enjoy the great outdoors from the property itself, too. The villa boasts twenty acres of land and formal gardens, which are a delight to stroll through, as well as ponds and a pretty brook. You're in for a surprise as you enter this converted barn on a farm near the town of Usk. A far cry from the period features and chintz you may expect in a home like this, it's been designed with plenty of contemporary flair. Bright and open, and with a superb glass roof over the sitting area, it's all crisp white walls, anthracite framed windows and modern wood floors.

Floor-to-ceiling windows on the ground floor open it right up to the patio and there's a choice between eating at the dining table or outside on fine days. And while the high-spec kitchen is perfectly practical for cooking at home, there's also the option of a barbecue. Three excellent en-suite bedrooms top off the accommodation but there's a little secret this home has been holding back – it's also got a private hot tub and a fire pit in the garden.

Just a little over two miles from Usk, it's close to the local reservoir, where you can book all sorts of water sports, and there's a golf course nearby too. Whether you're exploring the area by foot or by bike, it's a great spot on a charming smallholding – perfect for all the family and with fields and sheep as far as the eye can see.

It’s powered by green electricity – from the renewable energy that goes into the underfloor heating, to micro-hydro generation and solar panels. Upstairs the traditional farmhouse feel has been preserved, from the vaulted wood beamed ceiling, to the cosy living room set around a wood burning stove. Head downstairs to find the three tranquil bedrooms with king size beds, and windows looking out over the beautiful valley. 

Set in 45 acres of private land, you’ll be totally ensconced in peace and privacy here. The land is a haven for wildlife: there are beehives and an orchard, and you’ll hear and see a wide range of birds, including owls, kites, herons, and woodpeckers. The house is in a Black Skies reserve, meaning there’s very little air and light pollution. Come evening, don your bathrobe and head out to the wood fired hot tub for some incredible stargazing. 

There’s plenty to do in the surrounding area. Follow one of the excellent hiking trails in the Brecon Beacons, taking you through the Black Mountains, or to wild swimming spots. Your hosts live in a barn conversion adjacent to the farmhouse, and are always happy to give tips and recommendations. The house is right on the River Grwyne Fawr and adjacent to a tiny Mediaeval Church, so you’ll be surrounded by beauty wherever you go. While this is an opportunity to unplug from the rest of the world, civilization isn’t too far away – the towns of Abergavenny and Crickhowell are 5 miles away, where you’ll find a range of local amenities.

We think this family home is a real beaut. Keen chefs can cook up a storm in the well-appointed kitchen – it has everything you need, whether you fancy a Sunday roast or a fresh-baked treat. Although you're about a half-hour walk (or five-minute drive) from the train station, shops, pubs and eateries in Newport's city centre, Ridgeway's peaceful atmosphere and fantastic green spaces feel miles away. Take an invigorating stroll across the Ridgeway, admiring the views toward Cardiff – it's about ten minutes on foot – then pop by the local cafe on top of the hill for a coffee and a cake after your walk. For something a bit more hearty, grab a delicious meal at the restaurant down the street – or for a bit more buzz, hop on the train and be in Cardiff in twenty minutes flat.

Standing tall in a Georgian neighbourhood, this Newport home is just as handsome on the inside as it is on the outside. There's a great range of colours used throughout, with several shades on the walls and furnishings lending character. The kitchen is large and well-equipped enough for a handful of sous-chefs to work under the watchful eye of the head cook, while there's even a garden that uses tiers to work with the sloping land available. We think they've done a smashing job with it and you'll appreciate it during the summer months. At the top of the street, there's a park with a lovely view of the city, the centre of which only takes fifteen minutes to reach on foot. A little further afield, there are attractions towards the mouth of the River Usk, including RSPB Newport Wetlands, a quarter of an hour's drive away.

Exploring locally, you can take to the trails through the forest where if you’re lucky, you may even spot some wild boar and deer.

Many barn conversions across the British countryside tend to be relatively small and cosy affairs, but this example in rural Gloucestershire is a comparative colossus with a wealth of social space and amenities.

The design inside lies on the rustic side of things, with exposed stonework and wooden ceiling beams to be spotted alongside a wood-burning stove, a clawfoot bathtub and an ornate bed frame in the master bedroom. That being said, there's a contemporary sheen where it matters, especially in the pastel bedrooms, sleek bathrooms and the kitchen complete with an Aga.

So how would you fill your time at the address? Well, when the weather permits, you can make the most of the large garden with a lawn big enough for games and a patio area for alfresco feasts. There's even a hot tub ready and waiting for a relaxing spot to pass the golden hour. This home is set on a working dairy farm, and your host is happy to give you a tour of the farm – something the kids will probably adore. Just bear in mind, at certain times of the year, the farm can be busy. When you feel like exploring a little further afield, you can visit Chepstow Castle or Lydney in the Forest of Dean.

Slap bang in the national reserve of Malvern Hills, this collection of barns is based in an official Area of Outstanding National Beauty, and the home itself isn't far off that description, too. With views across the Wye Valley, it's set on five acres of pristine land and has nine bedrooms for you to choose between – either in the beautifully restored and extended 17th-Century farmhouse or the stunning new guest annexe. 

Lovers of interior design will have a field day here. It's been impeccably put together by its owner Kari, a professional designer, with nods to traditional country chic, contemporary cool and even Antipodean modern rustic – Kari grew up in Australia. The main house having been extended, the old stable unit was transformed into an architect-designed annexe with a series of split-level suites that wouldn't look out of place in a boutique hotel in Shoreditch.

The huge, 40ft kitchen is equipped with everything you'll need to cook for your group, with an incredible four ovens, five hobs and two dishwashers, or you can take the hard work out of it by hiring a private chef. You'll have four main living spaces with enough room to get together as a large group or enjoy a bit of privacy, and there are all sorts of outdoor seating spots – including a fire pit area, dining terrace and an Aussie-style shack enjoying views across the valley.

Built for entertaining, you'll have a games barn where you can play table tennis, work out on the gym equipment and grab some garden games, as well as a room perfect for group activities. There's even a wood-fired hot tub, a children's natural play area and private fields for you to explore.

Just a few miles from the book town of Hay-on-Wye, it's easy to explore the Welsh border from here, and hiking, cycling and canoeing are all popular local attractions. And if you fancy an action-packed break, your host can put together a unique itinerary for your group. You're bound to make memories that last a lifetime.
