Inside, it’s open-plan living made cosy with a wood-burning stove set in the old stone wall of the living room. Period features like the old timber frame and arrow-slit windows have been retained, showing off the age of the building. The Aga and Belfast sink in the kitchen keep that farmhouse feel, perfect when paired with farm-fresh produce from the hole-in-the-wall farm shop just down the road.

It’s in a stunning location and offers absolute peace and quiet, as well as privacy. If you’re looking to go off-grid and surround yourself with nature, you’ll love this home. 

The farmhouse is as traditional as they come, with wood beams and a roaring fireplace. In the mornings, cook hearty breakfasts on the AGA while enjoying the outstanding views of the valley from the kitchen window. From almost every angle here, the views captivate. 

Perhaps you’ll lace up your boots and head out on a nature walk. There’s an acre of woodland on the 40-acre farm, as well as a stretch of river for you to paddle in. There’s direct access to the Brecon Beacons National Park from the back of the farmhouse, so you won’t run out of hiking or cycling routes. 

When you return after a day exploring the Great Outdoors, you’ll be glad of the mountain spring water hot tub. Fire it up and soak your aching muscles, then spend the rest of the evening playing board games in front of the fire. 

The nearest pub is a fifteen-minute drive, and the cafes and bookshops of Hay-on-Wye are twenty-three minutes away. It may feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere, but you can grab a pint or a slice of cake easily enough. Perfection.

You're in for a surprise as you enter this converted barn on a farm near the town of Usk. A far cry from the period features and chintz you may expect in a home like this, it's been designed with plenty of contemporary flair. Bright and open, and with a superb glass roof over the sitting area, it's all crisp white walls, anthracite framed windows and modern wood floors.

Floor-to-ceiling windows on the ground floor open it right up to the patio and there's a choice between eating at the dining table or outside on fine days. And while the high-spec kitchen is perfectly practical for cooking at home, there's also the option of a barbecue. It's been impeccably put together by its owner Kari, a professional designer, with nods to traditional country chic, contemporary cool and even Antipodean modern rustic – Kari grew up in Australia. The main house having been extended, the old stable unit was transformed into an architect-designed annexe with a series of split-level suites that wouldn't look out of place in a boutique hotel in Shoreditch.

The huge, 40ft kitchen is equipped with everything you'll need to cook for your group, with an incredible four ovens, five hobs and two dishwashers, or you can take the hard work out of it by hiring a private chef. You'll have four main living spaces with enough room to get together as a large group or enjoy a bit of privacy, and there are all sorts of outdoor seating spots – including a fire pit area, dining terrace and an Aussie-style shack enjoying views across the valley.

Built for entertaining, you'll have a games barn where you can play table tennis, work out on the gym equipment and grab some garden games, as well as a room perfect for group activities. There's even a wood-fired hot tub, a children's natural play area and private fields for you to explore.

Just a few miles from the book town of Hay-on-Wye, it's easy to explore the Welsh border from here, and hiking, cycling and canoeing are all popular local attractions. And if you fancy an action-packed break, your host can put together a unique itinerary for your group. You're bound to make memories that last a lifetime.

Add into the mix, gig sash windows, high ceilings, and the central (yet surprisingly peaceful) location – and you've got yourself a pristine base from which to explore the picturesque city of Bath. Stroll just seven minutes to visit the historic Roman baths and explore the high street boutiques, cafes and restaurants that surround it. There's no need to drive or even use public transport here, as most of the city is within reach of a convenient walk from your apartment.

One of the things that we like most about The Austen is the way that it has retained its sense of history. The building is over 250 years old, and the hosts have managed to keep many of the original features, including the wood panelling, fireplaces, and Georgian shutters. The home is also in the very centre of Bath. As in, less than five minutes on foot to the Roman baths themselves (and the same distance to the station, which while less glamorous, is also worth knowing). Even if it weren’t kept so well, it would be a good base for exploring the city, but as it is, staying here is simply a delight.

Llandegfedd reservoir, with all its watersports, great fishing, walking and cycling, is just over 1 mile away, while the charming market town of Usk has many independent boutiques and several cafes and restaurants (2.2 miles from this home). Other attractions include Raglan Castle, Brecon Beacons National Park, Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Chepstow Castle and Chepstow Racecourse.
