Standing tall in a Georgian neighbourhood, this Newport home is just as handsome on the inside as it is on the outside. There's a great range of colours used throughout, with several shades on the walls and furnishings lending character. The kitchen is large and well-equipped enough for a handful of sous-chefs to work under the watchful eye of the head cook, while there's even a garden that uses tiers to work with the sloping land available. We think they've done a smashing job with it and you'll appreciate it during the summer months. At the top of the street, there's a park with a lovely view of the city, the centre of which only takes fifteen minutes to reach on foot. A little further afield, there are attractions towards the mouth of the River Usk, including RSPB Newport Wetlands, a quarter of an hour's drive away.

We think this family home is a real beaut. The cosy lounge is the perfect place to unwind with a movie night – and with access to Netflix and Prime, you'll have plenty of choices – while upstairs, a sumptuous clawfoot tub beckons after a long day on your feet. Keen chefs can cook up a storm in the well-appointed kitchen – it has everything you need, whether you fancy a Sunday roast or a fresh-baked treat. During the summer months, head out into the private garden and enjoy your dinner alfresco. Whether you're sipping wine on the deck while watching kids bounce on the trampoline or bubbling under the stars in the hot tub, it's our favourite spot to relax in the summer sunshine. 

Although you're about a half-hour walk (or five-minute drive) from the train station, shops, pubs and eateries in Newport's city centre, Ridgeway's peaceful atmosphere and fantastic green spaces feel miles away. Take an invigorating stroll across the Ridgeway, admiring the views toward Cardiff – it's about ten minutes on foot – then pop by the local cafe on top of the hill for a coffee and a cake after your walk. For something a bit more hearty, grab a delicious meal at the restaurant down the street – or for a bit more buzz, hop on the train and be in Cardiff in twenty minutes flat.

This barn has been lovingly restored into a stylish home. We adore the Usk Valley vistas from the patio windows, and if you look up, you get a view of the sky through the glazed ceiling. 

The impressive living space is perfect for entertaining your family and friends. There's plenty of room on the two comfy grey sofas for your guests and a selection of books and games to keep the gang occupied. Whip up some Welsh rarebit for lunch in the modern kitchen with its island, or head outside and grill some local produce on the barbecue. Later relax in the hot tub with a glass of wine or next to the toasty fire pit.

There's lots to do out and about, too. Llandegfedd reservoir, with all its watersports, great fishing, walking and cycling, is just over 1 mile away, while the charming market town of Usk has many independent boutiques and several cafes and restaurants (2.2 miles from this home). Other attractions include Raglan Castle, Brecon Beacons National Park, Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Chepstow Castle and Chepstow Racecourse.

You're in for a surprise as you enter this converted barn on a farm near the town of Usk. Floor-to-ceiling windows on the ground floor open it right up to the patio and there's a choice between eating at the dining table or outside on fine days. And while the high-spec kitchen is perfectly practical for cooking at home, there's also the option of a barbecue. Three excellent en-suite bedrooms top off the accommodation but there's a little secret this home has been holding back – it's also got a private hot tub and a fire pit in the garden.

Just a little over two miles from Usk, it's close to the local reservoir, where you can book all sorts of water sports, and there's a golf course nearby too. Whether you're exploring the area by foot or by bike, it's a great spot on a charming smallholding – perfect for all the family and with fields and sheep as far as the eye can see.

Even before you enter, it’s clear that there’s something special about Faerie World. The high position of the cottage gives a heavenly view of the stream below, and you can hear the babbling water from the terrace, which is itself surrounded by flowers, and makes you feel like you’re in a fairytale. Once inside, the living room and bedroom don’t disappoint. The bedroom in particular, with its Farrow & Ball colours, stands out. The kitchen doesn’t have the same aesthetic charm, but that’s a small gripe, and shouldn't give you any cause for concern.

From the moment you see the grand stone exterior and cobbled courtyard, you’ll know that this ever-so-charming home is steeped in history. It's a former malthouse that’s over 300 years old and filled with traditional features. When you step into the entrance hall, you’re entering through the large oak door onto the original cart-way, and as you start trying to choose which bedroom you want to lay claim to, you’ll be winding your way up a turret stairway with rope bannisters, surrounded by wooden beams and original fireplaces. The interior has been fully renovated, with a modern handmade kitchen, squishy sofas, and cute-as-a-button bedrooms. Sip your afternoon tea perched on the sunny window seat with a good book in hand (there's an extensive collection to choose from), while gazing at the expansive green views of the playing fields and village church in the backdrop. Elsewhere, the large 14-seater pine dining table will be the perfect spot to savour a slow dinner with the entire group. Although in the garden you'll notice a patio, complete with outdoor furniture, that’s ideal for wine and cheese nights – there's a large lawn and a range of outdoor games available too (including table tennis) for hours of early evening fun. You don’t have to go far to continue the historical theme, as the pub next door is one of the oldest in the country and has been the resting place for many a monarch visiting the area since the 15th century. The surrounding county town, Frome, just a fifteen-minute drive away, was voted one of the best places to live in the UK - explore the rich history, shop at independent boutiques, buy fresh produce at the local market or dine at one of the many eateries dotted around nearby.

This historic gatehouse (built in 1900) is part of a family estate, located in the Dorset village of Hinton St Mary. Recently refurbished by the owners in a modern but classic style (along with the estate’s stables, also available on Plum Guide), it's been opened up to outsiders for the very first time. We loved the balance between period features, such as the original windows, fireplace and kitchen floor, and brand new additions, like the shiny bathroom. Everything is finished in the best possible taste, with some lovely personal touches. The kitchen worktop is made from cedar from the estate, for example. The owners clearly want their new guests to feel at home, as they’re happy to accommodate needs, whims and fancies, from arranging a paid-for chef or babysitter, to offering a choice of seasonal duvets, luggage storage, locally sourced ingredients in the welcome pack and everything you’d need to bring your baby (high chair, cot, dinnerware, pram, potty, etc). The home’s location is another definite selling point. At the end of a small village lane near a cricket green and traditional pub, it’s picturesque and quaint. The nearest town is Sturminster Newton where there are shops and cafes, a great deli and butchers. This home makes a great base to explore the famous Dorset coast and countryside or simply settle back and relax by the wood-burning stove and imagine your servants are just out of sight.

For the more sedate option, follow the flat canal path into the charming town of Brecon for cafés and shops. On returning, treat yourself to a complimentary massage at The Treatment Studio in the estate. The cottage itself radiates history from its old stone walls and low, timber-beamed ceilings. A little library of books and wood-burner in the living room adds to that away-from-it-all feeling. In the kitchen and living room, the flagstone floor is heated underfoot so there’s no sacrificing comfort for aesthetics here. Upstairs, the master bedroom comes with a glorious sleigh bed to send you off to sleep.

When the sun shines, take your evening drinks out onto the front terrace with its sublime views of the River Frome. On winter nights, spill out onto the Chesterfield sofas for some board games or delve into the library of books. 

When it’s time to explore the award-winning estate, you won’t have far to go. The gardens start right from your back door – and you’ll have them all to yourself before they open to the public each day. Lose yourself in the meandering pathways – and if you time it right, take in a summer concert beneath the cloisters. Watch the sun set over the Somerset hills from the lush grounds – we love the stunning views from here. Later, relax in the hot tub or have a soak in the gorgeous slipper bath. When you're ready to venture out, the Georgian splendour of Bath is a twenty-minute drive away. Spend the day exploring the Royal Crescent, the Circus and the Roman Baths, as well as the many museums such as the Jane Austen Centre. Then unwind at the Thermae Bath Spa with its roof-top pool. For a more relaxed pace, there's a pub and café for lunch in Timsbury, around a five-minute stroll. Or put on your hiking boots and explore the glorious Somerset countryside.

Winter evenings are all about getting around that Fritz Hansen dining room table with original Eames chairs for slap-up dinners and catch-ups. And you can always keep the night flowing with a game of table tennis in the games room, squirreled away in the ancient stone garage. Or get your game face on for a late-night session around that Edwardian poker table.

This beautiful period home is right in the heart of historic Bath – in fact, Jane Austen lived in the terrace opposite from 1804-1805. You can definitely sense that period grandeur inside, with impressively high ceilings, marble fireplaces and gorgeous sash windows looking straight out onto Green Park. Dating back to the seventeenth century, the home is built from local honey-coloured stone and faces south across the Somerset countryside. Seven acres of grounds are dotted with chestnut trees and rolling lawns, while there’s also a children’s play area, a heated swimming pool and a croquet lawn, so there's no risk of running out of things to do. During the summer, the terraces are particularly inviting, while the clear skies provide fantastic stargazing opportunities come nighttime. Meanwhile, in winter, the thought of a brisk walk followed by lunch at the local pub is hard to resist — heading straight north from the property will get you to the pretty brooks that run off the River Cary, while the nearby villages of Corton Denham and Babcary are both home to excellent watering holes. The idyllic market town of Castle Cary is a ten-minute drive away, and just beyond that lies Bruton, which has been quietly remaking itself as a haven for artists, foodies and creatives.
