We think this family home is a real beaut. The cosy lounge is the perfect place to unwind with a movie night – and with access to Netflix and Prime, you'll have plenty of choices – while upstairs, a sumptuous clawfoot tub beckons after a long day on your feet. Keen chefs can cook up a storm in the well-appointed kitchen – it has everything you need, whether you fancy a Sunday roast or a fresh-baked treat. During the summer months, head out into the private garden and enjoy your dinner alfresco. Whether you're sipping wine on the deck while watching kids bounce on the trampoline or bubbling under the stars in the hot tub, it's our favourite spot to relax in the summer sunshine. 

Although you're about a half-hour walk (or five-minute drive) from the train station, shops, pubs and eateries in Newport's city centre, Ridgeway's peaceful atmosphere and fantastic green spaces feel miles away. Take an invigorating stroll across the Ridgeway, admiring the views toward Cardiff – it's about ten minutes on foot – then pop by the local cafe on top of the hill for a coffee and a cake after your walk. For something a bit more hearty, grab a delicious meal at the restaurant down the street – or for a bit more buzz, hop on the train and be in Cardiff in twenty minutes flat.

This barn has been lovingly restored into a stylish home. We adore the Usk Valley vistas from the patio windows, and if you look up, you get a view of the sky through the glazed ceiling. 

The impressive living space is perfect for entertaining your family and friends. There's plenty of room on the two comfy grey sofas for your guests and a selection of books and games to keep the gang occupied. Whip up some Welsh rarebit for lunch in the modern kitchen with its island, or head outside and grill some local produce on the barbecue. Later relax in the hot tub with a glass of wine or next to the toasty fire pit.

There's lots to do out and about, too. Llandegfedd reservoir, with all its watersports, great fishing, walking and cycling, is just over 1 mile away, while the charming market town of Usk has many independent boutiques and several cafes and restaurants (2.2 miles from this home). Other attractions include Raglan Castle, Brecon Beacons National Park, Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Chepstow Castle and Chepstow Racecourse.

You're in for a surprise as you enter this converted barn on a farm near the town of Usk. A far cry from the period features and chintz you may expect in a home like this, it's been designed with plenty of contemporary flair. Bright and open, and with a superb glass roof over the sitting area, it's all crisp white walls, anthracite framed windows and modern wood floors.

Floor-to-ceiling windows on the ground floor open it right up to the patio and there's a choice between eating at the dining table or outside on fine days. And while the high-spec kitchen is perfectly practical for cooking at home, there's also the option of a barbecue. Three excellent en-suite bedrooms top off the accommodation but there's a little secret this home has been holding back – it's also got a private hot tub and a fire pit in the garden.

Just a little over two miles from Usk, it's close to the local reservoir, where you can book all sorts of water sports, and there's a golf course nearby too. Whether you're exploring the area by foot or by bike, it's a great spot on a charming smallholding – perfect for all the family and with fields and sheep as far as the eye can see.

With views across the Wye Valley, it's set on five acres of pristine land and has nine bedrooms for you to choose between – either in the beautifully restored and extended 17th-Century farmhouse or the stunning new guest annexe. 

Lovers of interior design will have a field day here. It's been impeccably put together by its owner Kari, a professional designer, with nods to traditional country chic, contemporary cool and even Antipodean modern rustic – Kari grew up in Australia. The main house having been extended, the old stable unit was transformed into an architect-designed annexe with a series of split-level suites that wouldn't look out of place in a boutique hotel in Shoreditch.

The huge, 40ft kitchen is equipped with everything you'll need to cook for your group, with an incredible four ovens, five hobs and two dishwashers, or you can take the hard work out of it by hiring a private chef. You'll have four main living spaces with enough room to get together as a large group or enjoy a bit of privacy, and there are all sorts of outdoor seating spots – including a fire pit area, dining terrace and an Aussie-style shack enjoying views across the valley.

Built for entertaining, you'll have a games barn where you can play table tennis, work out on the gym equipment and grab some garden games, as well as a room perfect for group activities. There's even a wood-fired hot tub, a children's natural play area and private fields for you to explore.

Just a few miles from the book town of Hay-on-Wye, it's easy to explore the Welsh border from here, and hiking, cycling and canoeing are all popular local attractions. From the moment you see the grand stone exterior and cobbled courtyard, you’ll know that this ever-so-charming home is steeped in history. It's a former malthouse that’s over 300 years old and filled with traditional features. When you step into the entrance hall, you’re entering through the large oak door onto the original cart-way, and as you start trying to choose which bedroom you want to lay claim to, you’ll be winding your way up a turret stairway with rope bannisters, surrounded by wooden beams and original fireplaces. The interior has been fully renovated, with a modern handmade kitchen, squishy sofas, and cute-as-a-button bedrooms. Sip your afternoon tea perched on the sunny window seat with a good book in hand (there's an extensive collection to choose from), while gazing at the expansive green views of the playing fields and village church in the backdrop. Elsewhere, the large 14-seater pine dining table will be the perfect spot to savour a slow dinner with the entire group. Although in the garden you'll notice a patio, complete with outdoor furniture, that’s ideal for wine and cheese nights – there's a large lawn and a range of outdoor games available too (including table tennis) for hours of early evening fun. You don’t have to go far to continue the historical theme, as the pub next door is one of the oldest in the country and has been the resting place for many a monarch visiting the area since the 15th century. The nearby village of Holcombe Rogus has lots of beautiful nature to explore. However, it's a great jumping-off point for trips further afield. The city of Exeter is only a twenty-minute drive away if you want to spend an afternoon in a more urban environment, while day trips to the stunning beaches of the north and south coasts are well within reach, as are Exmoor and Dartmoor national parks.

Speaking of walks, there are plenty of public footpaths that pass across the farm, with your hosts able to provide OS maps and walking books should you need them. If you want to venture further afield, why not head up the Skirrid, Sugar Loaf and Black Mountains – all viewable from the garden.

The home is split between an old farmhouse, a cottage, and a studio-style barn, making it a marvellous choice for group getaways. It’s in a stunning location and offers absolute peace and quiet, as well as privacy. If you’re looking to go off-grid and surround yourself with nature, you’ll love this home. 

The farmhouse is as traditional as they come, with wood beams and a roaring fireplace. In the mornings, cook hearty breakfasts on the AGA while enjoying the outstanding views of the valley from the kitchen window. From almost every angle here, the views captivate. 

Perhaps you’ll lace up your boots and head out on a nature walk. There’s an acre of woodland on the 40-acre farm, as well as a stretch of river for you to paddle in. There’s direct access to the Brecon Beacons National Park from the back of the farmhouse, so you won’t run out of hiking or cycling routes. 

When you return after a day exploring the Great Outdoors, you’ll be glad of the mountain spring water hot tub. Fire it up and soak your aching muscles, then spend the rest of the evening playing board games in front of the fire. 

The nearest pub is a fifteen-minute drive, and the cafes and bookshops of Hay-on-Wye are twenty-three minutes away. It may feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere, but you can grab a pint or a slice of cake easily enough. Perfection. 


Serenity in the Black Mountains

Even before you enter, it’s clear that there’s something special about Faerie World. The high position of the cottage gives a heavenly view of the stream below, and you can hear the babbling water from the terrace, which is itself surrounded by flowers, and makes you feel like you’re in a fairytale. Once inside, the living room and bedroom don’t disappoint. The bedroom in particular, with its Farrow & Ball colours, stands out. The kitchen doesn’t have the same aesthetic charm, but that’s a small gripe, and shouldn't give you any cause for concern.

Faerie World

This magnificent Georgian home is steeped in history and filled with eighteenth-century glamour, from the antique sideboard to the cast-iron fireplace. Set on the first floor, this storey was often referred to by architects of the time as the 'Piano Nobile', since it was the part of the building that had the highest ceilings and tallest windows. Best of all, these glorious sash windows look out over picturesque views of the Royal Crescent and Royal Victoria Park, so you'll get to admire one of Bath's most iconic sights from the comfort of your own home. When you're ready to explore the city, it takes about fifteen minutes on foot to reach the famous Roman Baths, as well as a range of modern spas should you fancy trying it for yourself.

A lot of time and thought has been put into converting the historic chapel that is now The Burrow. Nestled in a tranquil spot of countryside surrounded by rolling hills, the space feels authentically rustic but still comfortable and elegant. The tall arch windows provide floods of natural light and beautiful views of the landscape, including the inviting (and heated) swimming pool. While remote location would be difficult for guests without a car, it also makes it a great spot for a romantic getaway. 



The Burrow

Just outside the picturesque village of Llanfrynach, on the grounds of a grade II*-listed Georgian mansion, this one-bedroom cottage is all about rest and relaxation. This former coach house has been converted into a stunning contemporary space. Downstairs, the sitting room boasts sky-high ceilings and ten-foot-tall French doors leading out onto a private patio.
