Slow down at this Welsh cottage set in the slate mining town of Blaenau Ffestiniog fringing the mighty Snowdonia National Park. Inside, the original period features of this slate-clad home have been carefully restored to create a modern family home boasting comfortable interiors. The welcome hamper stuffed with local goodies is a nice touch, and outside, there's an enclosed terrace to savour morning cuppas. Parking on the road outside the cottage can be tricky, but with a free car park nearby, we don't think it's a dealbreaker. When you're ready for an adventure, Snowdonia National Park is just a short drive away. Or stay local and climb the surrounding Moelwynion Mountains to reach Stiniog –⁠ the views are worth the climb.

This charming stone cottage in North Wales accommodates two guests and one child, with spectacular views of the Snowdonia Mountains from a secluded position above the Eglwysbach valley. The Bodnant Estate offers ten luxury self-catering cottages, including Ty Newydd, sleeping eight guests, and Lletty, sleeping six guests. The estate features hilly and wooded countryside in the lower reaches of the Conwy Valley and various houses and cottages available for rent as holiday lets. This delightful townhouse is on the beachfront of quiet Rhos-on-Sea. For a coastal getaway and the chance to experience the charm of a small town, look no further. 

The house is just across the road from the beach, so each morning you’ll wake up to the sound of the sea gently rushing to shore. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the living room showcase the home’s prime beachfront location – if you’re anything like us, you’ll lose track of how long you spend gazing at the peaceful view. There’s a small garden at the front of the house, where you might enjoy a cuppa while watching the fishing boats in the distance, as well as a sunny patio at the back of the house, ideal for takeaway dinners of fish and chips after long days spent on the beach. 

When you’ve had your fill of sailing, swimming and sea fishing from the beach, there’s still plenty to explore nearby. You might like to bring your bikes and set off along the coastal track. Conwy and its gorgeous castle are just twelve minutes away by car, which makes for a lovely afternoon out. Pop into a cafe for lunch before visiting the castle and taking in the history. Snowdonia National Park is also within easy reach, so any hikers in your group will be happy – a thirty-two-minute drive will see you setting off on walks that guarantee gorgeous scenery.

If you're a keen birdwatcher, you'll love this home's location on the banks of Foryd Bay, a nature reserve in North Wales that sees huge numbers of different species migrate to the area for winter. However, even if your interest in wildlife is less obsessive, we're sure you'll still fall for the sweeping views of the Menai Strait and Snowdonia in the other direction. The cottage is certainly geared up for just sitting back and marvelling at nature, with huge windows in the living room, as well as a roof terrace and a hot tub in the enclosed garden facing the water for when the weather's more agreeable. When the sun's gone down, you'll find this home the epitome of cosiness, especially with the fireplace crackling away and the whole party snuggled up on the comfy sofas surrounding. Although you'll find the immediate surroundings beautifully tranquil, there's plenty of action nearby if you seek it. Dinas Beach is only ten minutes away in the car, while the world's fastest zip line can be enjoyed — or not — at Zip World Penrhyn Valley, just over half an hour's drive away.

Characterful and cosy, this charming coastal retreat is mere steps away from Aberdyfi Beach. The crashing waves are so close you can almost touch them from the living area – in fact, you can sit at the dining table and see the beach out the big windows. It's the perfect spot to savour a glass of wine and people-watch, but with the art galleries, restaurants and the sea on your doorstep, you'll surely be tempted out. On rainy days, curl up with a book on the squishy sofas, play a board game or two, or just snooze the afternoon away in the two comfortable bedrooms. Perched on the side of the Menai Strait, this four-storey gem dates back to the Victorian era and benefits from beautiful views of the sea, Bangor Pier and the Snowdonia mountain range. This can be enjoyed from the big bay windows or the comfort of the outdoor terrace. Better still, you can head down to the home's private shingle beach which also has a small cave to explore. Back inside the home, the interior is traditional, with portraits hanging on the walls and a large wooden dining table a regal centrepiece to gather the group around after the day's excursions. The town of Beaumaris with its castle, pier and beach take just six minutes to reach in the car, while you can get to Penrhyn Zip World in twenty minutes if you're looking for hi-octane thrills.

Built a few years ago, this beautiful conversion may still bear some resemblance to a barn with its stone clad facade, but that’s where the similarities end. Inside you’ll find simple, clean lines and, apart from a few pops of colour, a fairly neutral colour palette. Stylish, and clearly modern, the home’s crowning glory is the wide expanse of green that can be admired from the front door. Stare out over the beautiful dips and peaks as you take your seat at the wrought-iron table outside and nurse your first cup of coffee of the day. 

Breakfast can also be enjoyed out here if you prefer, although the wood dining table in the living space is elegant, and with its position right next to a window, you don’t entirely lose sight of the scenic views on offer. 

With a real focus on reconnecting you with nature, most of the ground floor rooms open up to let the fresh country air in – take a nap on the cushy bed with the doors ajar and wake up refreshed. 

Walk the grounds or watch the little ones run around on the lawn whilst you enjoy a glass of wine in a sun lounger. This is also a great spot for sunsets, but before that, you can drive out and explore the rural Welsh beauty of this area, you might want to stop off at the Rhug Estate Farm Shop and drive-thru, about six minutes away, to refuel before perhaps enjoy two splendid nearby reservoir walks: Brenig and Alwyn

In the idyllic mining own of Blaenau Ffestiniog, this home was once an old chapel dating back to 1861. The building has been lovingly renovated, featuring an open-plan kitchen and snug area ideal for family living. There’s a pool table here too, which is boung to keep both the kids and grown-ups entertained for a few hours. When it comes to things to see and do, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to activities. We recommend heading into town to rent bikes and exploring some of the many biking routes on offer, which will have you riding past old quarries, lakes and rivers.

Picture the scene — you've just spent a long day in the great Welsh outdoors and you're faced with the choice of snuggling up by the crackling log burner, lying back into a steamy bath or sitting out in the garden and watching the sky go through its dramatic daily transformation. This is a home that's completely dedicated to cosiness, right down to the rustic decor touches, like the wooden ceiling beams and soft furnishings. Another way to feel completely at peace is by looking through the wide window in the master bathroom, which faces Malltraeth Marsh, a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest that's great for birdwatching.

It's also possible to see Snowdonia from this address and you can be inside the National Park in half an hour's drive. Closer to home, it takes thirteen minutes in the car to reach the beach at Traeth Mawr or twenty minutes for the two-thousand-acre Newborough Forest.

Cool and contemporary inside, it’s quite the contrast to the rugged landscape surrounding it. Just take care with the cliff edge – little ones and four-legged friends will need to be supervised. 

Clifftop Dream

The medieval town of Shrewsbury is the truly historic heart of Shropshire, with nearly 700 listed buildings in a town of just over 70,000 people. With such a striking skyline and such fine examples of 15th-century construction techniques, it’s no surprise that your home is another architectural marvel. This terraced house has been completely refurbished in a superbly modern fashion. Our favourite spot has to be the bright and airy open-plan living space. With its wonderful bi-folding doors, this clever design essentially removes the wall between your home and your south-facing courtyard garden (perfect for the unpredictable English weather). Mid-century furniture looks stylish in the lounge, while the roll-top tub up in the master en-suite brings a vintage edge to proceedings. For more on local history, take a stroll through town to reach Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery in just eighteen minutes. Another fantastic walk is along the River Severn. Your home is just three minutes from the riverbank, from where you can follow it all the way across the border to Wales. It’s definitely one for experienced hikers with a strong pair of boots though, at just over ten miles away.

Once the former shooting residence of the Earl of Marlborough, this charming Grade II listed cottage in the heart of Snowdonia carefully stitches together history and contemporary design. Original slate floors and a huge inglenook fireplace contrast against modern additions such as the sleek roll-top bath and luxurious hot tub. The kitchen is the heart of the home, where your clan will spend time eating, drinking and playing card games if it tips it down outside. Light the wood-burning stove to keep the chill at bay or warm up with a brisk walk to the town of Blaenau Ffestiniog – you’ll get there in under an hour if you go at a decent pace. Spend sunny afternoons in the beer garden of the Pengwern pub, just a minute’s walk up the road, or jump in the car and take the ten-minute drive to the trout-filled Llyn Trawsfynydd. Hire a fishing rod or stroll around the water’s edge, stopping for a well-deserved cup of tea in the café along the way.

Explore Anglesey from this east-coast escape, just steps away from the coastal path – which offers a 130-mile circular route past the island's secluded coves, vast sandy beaches and captivating villages – it's an ideal base for hikers and bikers. However, with far-reaching sea views from all rooms at the front of the house and the front garden seating area, you won't have to move far to appreciate the island's beauty. Centrally located in the quaint former fishing village of Moelfre, you'll find a convenience store, a couple of cafes and a pub a short stroll away, while it's a five-minute drive to the neighbouring village of Benllech, where there are a couple of supermarkets for stocking up on essentials. 


Seen From the Sea

Nestled in the tranquil village of Rowen in North Wales, this charming cottage promises a relaxing retreat. A home for all seasons, colder months can be spent snuggled up by the wood burner, while in summer, the garden is a serene spot to enjoy alfresco meals as you listen to the babbling river running by. When you’re ready to venture out, you’ll find historic Conwy, Llandudno, Betws-y-Coed and a selection of beaches all within easy reach – however you like to spend your time, there’s something for everyone here. 

River Reverie

There were plenty of reasons why this penthouse apartment made it into our collection, but let's start with the most obvious. When guests step out onto the ornate white balcony, they're greeted with stunning views over the Dyfi Estuary and Cardigan Bay, stretching all the way down the Ceredigion Coastline. As is often the case with coastal locations, there's just so much sky and this uninterrupted panorama brings the added benefit of meaning the interior is flooded with natural light through the windows and skylights. This is emphasised pleasingly by the stark white walls and it makes for a wonderfully bright space to sprawl out on the tan leather sofa. As you can probably tell from looking out the window, Aberdyfi Beach sits just across the street and there are cafes and pubs along the seafront for when you fancy a refreshment. Slightly further afield, there are opportunities for birdwatching in RSPB Ynys-hir and Dyfi Osprey Project, both taking around half an hour to reach in the car.

The Bells of Aberdyfi

The picturesque town of Caernarfon is a truly lovely part of Wales. You can spend your days strolling along the waterfront, exploring the countryside and moorland nearby, or taking in the beautiful scenery. Glorious Snowdonia National Park is a short drive away, so hikers will want to pack their boots. 

This lovely apartment sits amid the town’s narrow streets, just a four-minute walk from the 13th-century Caernarfon Castle. History buffs will love visiting this UNESCO World Heritage site, which serves as an attractive backdrop for this delightful town. 

The apartment is within a Grade II listed building, but inside, it’s been brought right up to date. It’s warm and cosy, with all the modern amenities you might need for a break in Wales. There's an awful lot to like about this Regency home, but to start with anything but the incredible location feels almost sacrilegious. That being said, the home's interior is quite impressive, too. When you can prise yourself away from this home's many amenities, there's a wealth of historic attractions, buzzy bars and riverside walking paths to explore in local Chester, but there are other options a little further afield – beaches on the north Welsh coastline can be reached in 45 minutes' drive, while Liverpool sits a similar amount of time to the north.

This pretty home can be found beside the River Wnion in the small market town of Dolgellau, right at the heart of Snowdonia. It’s a wonderful base for exploring the national park, but staying home is just as much of a treat here. You can enjoy riverside views from the garden, where you’ll have a barbecue. Inside, the mill conversion boasts a wood-burning stove and a games room that’s ideal for older children. Little ones will need to be supervised on the spiral staircase.

Tucked away in the countryside surrounding Shrewsbury, this lovely cabin makes for an idyllic getaway for two. It can be found on the banks of River Perry, on the border between Wales and England. It’s set in grounds that also boast woodlands and access to the river, in a gloriously quiet spot amid beautiful countryside. 

There are excellent hikes to be enjoyed right from your doorstep, and it only takes forty-eight minutes to drive to the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty where you can get up close to some pretty spectacular scenery. History buffs might want to visit Shrewsbury Castle, which is twenty-seven minutes away by car. There are pubs within a five-minute drive of the cabin, so after a day of the Great Outdoors you can sink back into a comfy chair by a roaring fire and enjoy a local pint. 

Of course, you might want to set up camp here in the cabin and not leave the grounds – it would be perfectly understandable. The tranquil private woodland creates a soothing backdrop for doing absolutely nothing. You might sit on the balcony and get stuck into a good book, or stroll along the river looking for ducks to feed. Perhaps you’ll fire up the barbecue in the late afternoon, ready for a relaxing evening in the cabin. When the sun starts to set, you’ll want to slip into the hot tub. Sip glasses of bubbly while soaking away your troubles, and look forward to being woken up by birdsong in the morning.
