A cabin in the woods reimagined, this home belongs in the centrefold of a magazine. Although this Pembrokeshire apartment underwent a recent renovation, one thing that hasn't changed is just how peaceful the view from the balcony is, with the unmistakably blue waters of Carmarthen Bay peering through the trees. It may not be the biggest outdoor space in the world, but this seaward orientation makes up for it.

Inside, the glass doors in the main living area are especially generous when it comes to natural light and this dances pleasingly off the wooden floors and white walls. When it comes to the design, it's a pretty simple affair with only a few pieces of coastal artwork nodding to the location, but it's all been executed pretty well, particularly the sleek kitchen and bathroom.

When it comes to seeing a little more of the local area, the centre of Saundersfoot and its beach is all of five mintues' walk from the front door. The town of Tenby is also only ten minutes' drive down the coastline and offers visitors a castle and a selection of galleries to visit.

With features dating back to the sixteenth century, a stay at this former farmhouse epitomises a Devon country retreat. Within the grounds, you’ve got a shared indoor swimming pool, games room and playparks aplenty for the kids. Feeding sessions at the animal enclosures take place in the morning where you can get close to the alpacas, piglets and pygmy goats. And there’s an honesty shop onsite too, selling delights like eggs straight from the farm, home-cooked ready meals and barbecue meat packs. If you want to explore the wider area, Combe Martin is a five-minute drive away with a couple of local pubs and a supermarket, and Combe Martin’s beach is just a ten-minute drive.

The home itself dated back to the sixteenth century and you can feel this history in the old beams, minstrel’s gallery above the living room and listed staircase inside. Decor touches like an old spinning wheel, suspended aviary and antique writer’s bureau bring that old-world feel back into the bones of the home and the living room is set around a traditional old stove set in stonework. The huge kitchen is designed farmhouse-style with a big range cooker and island in the centre surrounded by high chairs. The master bedroom features a carved four-posted bed and each bedroom is decorated with antique darkwoork furniture and Victoriana accents. 

Outside a delightful surprise awaits. A bubbling hot tub overlooks the gardens and out to the rolling hills beyond. There’s also dining for the group on the patio, courtesy of a barbecue and perhaps a hamper of locally-sourced meat from the honesty shop onsite.

Once a working dairy, this stone cottage at the foot of the Brecon Beacons encompasses the country idyll. The enclosed garden offers outdoor dining and a place for dogs to run around safely, and you’re on a 12-acre estate with no livestock so there are plenty of walkies for furry friends. Exposed timber beams in the bedroom and (heated) flagstone floor speak of the building’s history, and splashes of crimson and green are reminiscent of the Welsh flag. Perched just above Woolacombe Beach, if you're anything like us, you'll spend nearly every moment here on the expansive deck, watching the tide rise and fall – except when you're sunbathing on the sand or surfing the waves, of course. Wake up to the ocean vistas each morning, then following an alfresco breakfast, stroll down to the beach for an afternoon picnic and a dip in the water. End the evening with a barbecue and a glass of wine, watching as the sun slowly sinks below the horizon. Sounds heavenly, doesn't it?

You can even make the most of the scenery inside, thanks to the floor-to-ceiling sliding doors that drench the entire home in natural light. Contemporary and cool, we love how the coastal colour scheme reflects the backdrop – and all the mod-cons are accounted for. The rainfall showers in the en-suite bathrooms are hotel-worthy, a high-spec kitchen stocked with culinary gear (including a wine chiller) is a dream to cook in and Netflix, Now TV, books and board games will keep you entertained on rainy days. 

Location-wise, you can follow the South West Coastal Path into Woolacombe for eateries and pubs (about a fifteen-minute walk), or head in the opposite direction and check out the views from Morte Point (twenty-five minutes away). There's also some great golfing at Saunton if you fancy a day on the fairway, while many of North Devon's gems are within driving distance.

As you look around this home, it becomes clear very quickly that it has been designed to make the most of the beautiful coastal scenery in which this part of south Wales really specialises. With such glorious panoramas, you could be forgiven for not really paying the interior much attention, but when you do get around to it, you'll find a modern space that's simple but effective — we're fans of the minimalist white kitchen, in particular. As you can probably imagine when looking out the window, the beach isn't too far away — just five minutes' walk, in fact. Tenby Castle can be reached in under a quarter of an hour on foot, too.

If you’re looking for a peaceful escape to the Brecon Beacons with a few luxuries thrown in, this is the cottage for you. Set within 12 acres of estate grounds, there are plenty of walks for dogs and humans alike. If you’re seriously into your hiking, then the trails right from the cottage’s front door into the peaks of the Brecon Beacons (including Pen Y Fan) won’t disappoint. For the more sedate option, follow the flat canal path into the charming town of Brecon for cafés and shops. On returning, treat yourself to a complimentary massage at The Treatment Studio in the estate. The cottage itself radiates history from its old stone walls and low, timber-beamed ceilings. A little library of books and wood-burner in the living room adds to that away-from-it-all feeling. In the kitchen and living room, the flagstone floor is heated underfoot so there’s no sacrificing comfort for aesthetics here. This Grade II listed seaside cottage is the perfect base for relaxing breaks on the Pembrokeshire coast. It was lovingly restored and modernised in 2021, so while it still retains its historic charm – and traditional features and layout – it’s now a wonderfully comfortable and cosy cottage. 

The cottage sits just across the road from the sea, so you can be paddling in the shallows of Dale’s beach in no time. From the water sports centre in Dale, you can try your hand at any number of activities, including sailing, surfing, and kayaking. We’d be tempted to give paddleboarding a go, followed by a hearty meal in the award-winning village pub. Of course, you might choose to fish for your supper instead?

Nature-lovers will have plenty to keep them entertained too, with a whole host of coastal walks to enjoy. You might partake in a spot of bird watching on the Gann, or take the ferry to Skomer Island to see the puffins in summer. 

However you spend your days, you’ll be glad to have such a pleasant home from home to return to. When the weather is fine you can tuck into picnic lunches on the front lawn, and admire the sea view as you dine. When it’s a little colder, nothing beats curling up in the living room to play board games together.

With sea views from every angle, this hillside home is the perfect base for beach babies. Bookended by Woolacombe and Mortehoe, you'll be within walking distance from some of Devon's best stretches of sand. Surfers will want to try the waves at Woolacombe beach below, while more sheltered bathing can be found in the coves of Combesgate and Barricane beaches. 

In the evenings, sit out on the patio and watch the sun set over the sea with a glass of something nice. On chillier nights, curl up by the wood-burning stove in the cosy lounge as the wind picks up outside. The modern kitchen has all the facilities needed for rustling up a feast, though it's hard to resist the fish and chip shop found a ten-minute walk away. For more formal meals – or for a few cocktails in town – Woolacombe has several restaurants and bars, or the larger town of Barnstaple is a twenty-minute drive away. The South West Coast Path runs past the house so join it to walk through magnificent rock formations and striking cliffs above. Our recommendation? Lundy Island – famous for its puffins – can be seen from the house and makes for a great day trip, with ferries leaving from Ilfracombe and Bideford.
