While there’s a climb to reach the home on the third floor, it’s more than worth the effort when met with the striking vistas stretching just outside your picture windows. Make yourself comfortable on the plump sofa with a book and mug of tea – pausing now and then to take in the majesty of your locale – before gathering for a celebratory meal at the window-side table while the sun sets over the water below. At night, the king-size bed beckons a seamless night’s sleep, sure to leave you rested and ready for another day of sightseeing. 

Speaking of exploring, take a stroll around the building’s terraced garden, then saunter along the coastal path to Rotherslade (about twenty minutes) where there’s a charming beachside cafe. Our recommendation? Grab a cone from Forte’s Ice Cream Parlour and stroll to Bracelet Bay (nine minutes) before continuing on to Mumbles Pier (twelve minutes) and Mumbles Beach (twenty minutes).

Right outside the window, the wild Atlantic stretches before you at this cosy little cottage on Swansea Bay. It’s in Mumbles, a seaside suburb with a Victorian pier, a long sweep of sandy beach and a medieval castle. We’re not exaggerating when we say the beach is mere footsteps away, just across the road. From here, you can follow the traffic-free walking path along the coast to Swansea, or to the wild headland in the other direction.

Returning to this cottage after a brisk seaside walk is a delight, especially with the electric fireplace glowing in the living room. You can watch the waves from the comfy sofa, thanks to the big sash window in the living room. There’s a dining table in here too, or you can opt for the more casual breakfast table in the full kitchen. Upstairs, the sea view continues in plush bedrooms and the loft landing is home to a bean-bag-strewn hang-out den. The piece de resistance is the private walled garden out the back with a cute wrought-iron dining set for an evening tipple in the sun.

About five minutes' walk from the Mumbles seafront, this cottage is exactly the sort of cosy place you'll look forward to returning to after a long day out in the open air.

If you're here during the warmer months, you can sit outside and watch the sky go through its daily transformation from the terrace, but if it's too cold to even think about doing that, you can hunker down next to the wood burner in the open-concept living area or luxuriate in the bathtub instead.

The design throughout is classy and uncomplicated, with smart wooden floors, wooden furnishings and chic tiling in both the kitchen and bathroom doing all the heavy lifting. Sometimes, you really don't need to go over the top with it.

When it comes to seeing a little more of the local area, you can reach plenty of attractions on foot, including Oystermouth Castle four minutes away and Rotherslade Bay taking about a quarter of an hour. Even closer than both of those, there's a fish and chips shop at the end of the road, which is sure to come in handy when you're not in the mood to cook.

Just a stroll from Oxwich Bay's long sandy beach, dubbed one of the finest in the country, this spacious home dates back to the 1840s. Extended and smartly modernised over the years, it still retains much of its old-world charm, with wood beams (thought to have been originally taken from a local shipwreck) and a delightful stone fireplace in the cosy living room – perfect for winter escapes. But if you're visiting in the summer months, this home has a rather special feature. In its private, walled courtyard you'll find a heated swimming pool.

Set on the crest of a hill, there are some excellent sea views to be had from the first floor – including from the roll-top bathtub. And there's a large conservatory where you can sit and enjoy the sunshine, with Georgian-style French doors opening out to a lovely sunny patio with outdoor sofas. Cooking at home will be a breeze in the large and well-equipped kitchen and if you're lucky with the weather you can choose to barbecue down by the pool.

Just a short walk from a restaurant and a hotel, there's also a local castle to explore and some of the best coastal footpaths are easily accessed from your door. Further afield, Rhossili is just a seventeen-minute drive and The Mumbles is twenty-five minutes away.

We can't decide, you know, whether our favourite spot here is the gorgeous copper roll-top bath or the hot tub on the deck. Or watch the sky darken and reveal thousands of diamonds (if you're a keen stargazer, you'll be glad to know the sky around these parts is rated as class four on the Bortle Dark-Sky Scale). This romantic studio cabin is situated in the hamlet of Landimore on the north coast of the Gower. Within a five-minute walk, you can have your feet on the sand of Slade Bay – a tucked-away gem in South Wales. Hidden away among bucolic south Welsh countryside, the estate on which this chateau-style house sits on dates back to the 14th century. However, those visiting in the 21st century will find a whole host of reasons to fall in love with the property.

Walking around the interior is a bit like wandering about a museum for there are historic features everywhere you look, whether it's the stained glass window, ornate fireplace or Elizabethan-era staircase. The wood-panelled drawing room is a particular favourite of ours, mostly for the fact that it contains a secret door leading to the library.

If we've made it sound fusty and dusty so far, that couldn't be further from the truth. Most of the interior design is fresh and contemporary — the sleek kitchen stands as proof of that — while the number of modern amenities at guests' disposal would put many hotels to shame.
