This former coach house has been converted into a stunning contemporary space. Downstairs, the sitting room boasts sky-high ceilings and ten-foot-tall French doors leading out onto a private patio. The wood burner and deerskin rugs on the floor add a cosy feeling that's perfect for the colder months, while during the summer, you can throw open those doors and let the outside in. The cottage actually has two patio areas – one facing east and the other west – so you can always catch the sun no matter the time of day. On the second floor, you'll find a small balcony that overlooks the complex's courtyard with room to sit and enjoy some peace. Penarth has plenty of coastal attractions to keep you occupied, including a pier and marina both fifteen minutes' walk away. The centre of Cardiff takes a similar amount of time to reach on the train, while Barry Island and its beach can be reached in just over twenty minutes' drive.

With features dating back to the sixteenth century, a stay at this former farmhouse epitomises a Devon country retreat. Within the grounds, you’ve got a shared indoor swimming pool, games room and playparks aplenty for the kids. Feeding sessions at the animal enclosures take place in the morning where you can get close to the alpacas, piglets and pygmy goats. And there’s an honesty shop onsite too, selling delights like eggs straight from the farm, home-cooked ready meals and barbecue meat packs. If you want to explore the wider area, Combe Martin is a five-minute drive away with a couple of local pubs and a supermarket, and Combe Martin’s beach is just a ten-minute drive.

The home itself dated back to the sixteenth century and you can feel this history in the old beams, minstrel’s gallery above the living room and listed staircase inside. Decor touches like an old spinning wheel, suspended aviary and antique writer’s bureau bring that old-world feel back into the bones of the home and the living room is set around a traditional old stove set in stonework. The huge kitchen is designed farmhouse-style with a big range cooker and island in the centre surrounded by high chairs. The master bedroom features a carved four-posted bed and each bedroom is decorated with antique darkwoork furniture and Victoriana accents. 

Outside a delightful surprise awaits. A bubbling hot tub overlooks the gardens and out to the rolling hills beyond. There’s also dining for the group on the patio, courtesy of a barbecue and perhaps a hamper of locally-sourced meat from the honesty shop onsite.  

Old Farmhouse

Located in the unspoilt hamlet of Benville (as once described by Thomas Hardy), this renovated cottage is ideally placed for a family retreat to West Dorset. Your host provides a starter pack with essentials like tea, coffee and biscuits, but if you need to stock up on extra bits, the village of Evershot also lies just two miles away. The charming location allows you to take in country views from just about every angle, while the inglenook fireplace serves as a lovely spot for unwinding after a lunchtime walk. Better still, you'll also have an outdoor dining patio and a garden to enjoy on warmer days. We recommend having a car here – you'll find private parking on the premises.

The house is surrounded by farmland but the nearby town provides local produce and delicious meals out. Stop off at Dennis China Works (a fifteen-minute ride away) for a pit stop in the tea rooms or why not visit one of the local cider producers' orchards and presses to see how it's made? Perry’s Cider in Dowlish Wake, for example, is only fifteen minutes away by bicycle or a six-minute drive away in the car.
