Looking like something out of a travel magazine, this modern accommodation's natural colour palette and minimal decor style isn't even the best bit when it has views of the Messinian Gulf to compete with. Drink them in from the private swimming pool or have your pick at the outdoor seating – there's a nook for everything from sunbathing to alfresco dining. And though the standout location might've drawn our eye, we also like the flexibility here – with two villas at your disposal, each with its own living, dining and kitchen spaces, it gives the entire family a little more space and privacy. Find Stoupa Beach and Neochori village, a short drive away.

This is the kind of holiday home you dream of for months. As you’re slogging away through work, your mind will drift to azure blue seas and the sunset turning the clear blue sky into a work of pastel-hued art. You’ll picture dozing by the pool as the sun warms the pale stone of the villa, turning it gold. You’ll imagine waking up to sunbeams on your pillow, streaming through a patio door. 

This dreamy home can be found in Neochori Mani, hugging the coast. The swimming pool faces out to the sea, lined by sun loungers, trees and lavender. Those who appreciate symmetry would do well to pay a visit to this idyllic address on the southern coastline of the Peloponnese peninsula.

Two handsome villas made from local Mani stone and Byzantine tiles stand side by side at the centre of the plot, separated by a picturesque foliage-covered pergola leading to the garden. Out here, you'll find a long swimming pool, as well as plenty of loungers with views of the Greek countryside. Add to this a stone barbecue and a children's play area, and it's not hard to see where summer afternoons will be passed.

The homes' interiors feel in keeping with the traditional exteriors. Look about and you'll spot antique furnishings from around the world, including an Alpine bookcase, vintage English washstand and Persian carpets. That being said, the rest of the design is fairly modern, with neutral tones and plush furnishings.

Offering breathtaking views over the glistening waters of the Ionian Sea, this spectacular three-bedroom villa is situated in the Outer Mani, close to the pretty coastal village of Stoupa. Well off the established tourist trail, it's known for offering a glimpse into what Greece used to be.

A traditional stone facade, complete with arches and scenic balconies, houses an informally luxurious minimalist interior of earth tones, natural fabrics and whitewashed wood. There's no bold artwork to distract from the view, only lovely prints of the local flora that you'll note as you gaze out over the water.

Outside, an inviting pool is flanked by sun loungers and a comfortable seating area. The surrounding patio also offers a covered dining area sat beneath a pergola, before giving way to acres of olive trees that line the hillside all the way to the sea.

An hour south, you'll discover the Deep Mani and the spectacular Diros caves, which can only be explored by punt. Carry on down the coast and you'll come across sleepy fishing villages where time stands still, and where off-the-clock fishermen can occasionally be persuaded to take you out in their boat to explore remote coves and uninhabited islands topped with ruins.

Perched right in front of the sea and offering views of Messinian Bay, this apartment delivers on location. Exploring Kalamata on foot is easy, with local taverns, restaurants, and bars within easy reach. The beach and port are also just across the street. Back home, you can rest your feet in the modern living space. Although the lofted main bedroom is comfortable and contemporary, it isn't the most private since it overlooks the lounge. Guests five and six will also be sleeping on a sofa bed, so we think it's best for shorter trips. Overall, the home lacks some creature comforts – including a washing machine and proper air conditioning – but it's a convenient place to unwind between adventures.
