For everyday amenities such as supermarkets, it's a short drive to the village of Fragokastello – we'd recommend having a car here.

Accommodation inside is spread across five apartments, each with its own fully-equipped kitchen and wrap-around terrace. Views from the top of the home stretch beyond the mountains and all the way to the sea. In terms of location, you’re a twenty-minute drive from the Venetian ruins and pristine sandy beaches of Rethymno, but there are hiking trails to explore on your doorstep if you fancy.

This beautiful villa in Frangokástello couldn’t get much closer to the ocean if it tried. Nestled happily on the coastline of southern Crete, it boasts stunning picture-postcard vistas from practically every vantage point and with the Libyan sea so close, from the moment you arrive you can feel calmness and complete tranquillity wash over you. 

Inside, the home is clean and contemporary. The bathrooms are akin to what you’d find in a spa, with the en-suite to the main bedroom situated in the room itself. We love the modern kitchen, complete with a waterfall island for a little touch of luxury. This is just the spot for loved ones to gather with a glass of wine, while the nominated cook for the evening shows off their culinary skills in the kitchen.

Step onto the terrace and your eyes can’t help but be drawn to the view – it’s mesmerising. In the mornings, picture yourself with a warming cup of coffee, settled on the sun lounger as the Greek rays warm your skin, just listening to the gentle roll of the waves. This home's proximity to the beach (just 250 metres away) makes it a stand-out. Private access is via pretty steep steps, and it’s shared with the villa next door, but you can't beat having the sea that close. The nearest taverna, bar and mini-market are a little further, so you'll need to hire a car or get a cab. But the views back home are stunning, and there's a pool to cool off from the sun. You can enjoy vistas from inside as one of the bedrooms opens onto the terrace. One of the more unusual design features is that the kitchen is open to the elements, but as Crete is known for its fantastic weather, that's not a problem.

Parents, you’ll love this villa. There’s a playground for little ones to tire themselves out in – as well as the pool – and there are two separate lounges so you can dedicate one to toys and kids’ movies, and keep one for yourselves. Bright and cheerful, this villa boasts charming touches like a vegetable patch that you’re welcome to pick from. It’s out in the Cretan countryside so it’s peaceful and pretty, but you’ll need a car to get around. You can drive to the sandy beaches and hustle and bustle of Rethymnon in ten minutes though, so you’re not completely out in the sticks.

Where do we start with this villa just outside Agios Pavlos? There's so much to love. Firstly it's under 250 metres from the beach – that caught our eye straight away. And then there are those immaculate views over the shimmering sea that are enough to make anyone swoon with holiday envy. The vistas over the water are absolutely stunning from sunrise to sunset, best enjoyed over long alfresco meze lunches before cooling off in the private pool or simply relaxing on the daybeds as you work on your tan.

You'll be pleased to know, too, that this home was built in harmony with the natural environment and follows the principles of bioclimatic design, so it almost has zero energy consumption. For a family holiday in Crete with everything to hand, this is a great option. This villa is part of a complex of two villas in Akoumia, looking out over the Libyan Sea and boasting panoramic views. As you sip lemonade by the pool, your gaze will drift to the mountains in the distance. This is a peaceful home far from the touristy crowds, ideal for family breaks and making memories. 

Perhaps you’ll start the day with a family breakfast on the balcony. It’s the best place in the villa to take in the view. The little ones will likely want to jump straight in the pool before spending the rest of their day playing on the swings and slide. You might settle in a hammock to doze in the sunshine or read a book under an umbrella by the pool.

After looking out to Rethymno for so long, you'll probably want to pay the city a visit. Thankfully, it's only 2km away and has a wealth of historic architecture, museums and restaurants that warrant multiple trips. It's also fair to say that this corner of Crete isn't short of sandy beaches, either.

Or head to Rethymno, with its old Venetian harbour, 6 kilometres away. For a day at the sea, the nearest beach is 3 kilometres from this lovely villa.
