Hail the New Romantic

There's so much to love about this freshly renovated historic home, that it's hard to know quite where to start. But as it's probably the leading reason visitors flock to this corner of the Dalmatian coast, we'll start with the view. Set high above the Old Town, in the most sought-after part of Dubrovnik, it looks out over that postcard-perfect vista – just as it has for centuries. If its old stone walls could talk, it could tell us tales of this dramatic city, reaching back to the Renaissance. 

Today, the interior has been respectfully brought up to 21st Century expectations, with smart, neutral decor and a mix of contemporary and classical furnishings giving it a stylish, sophisticated look. Bright and comfortable, the living and dining space is a sociable room with incredible views. There's a fully equipped kitchen if you're cooking at home and a wine cellar in the basement, or you can cook in the traditional summer method – outside on the barbecue.

And while the courtyard garden and your private pool are no doubt the stars of the show here, we found ourselves falling in love with the little balcony belonging to the master bedroom on the top floor. We dare you to find a better view of this UNESCO city anywhere. Just a short walk to the nearest pebble beach and a short drive into the city centre, it's a sensational home in an enviable location.

This villa is a private retreat just 750 metres away from Dubrovnik. Enjoy stunning panoramic sea views from this delightful villa, which is spread over five floors so has no shortage of space. There are even two swimming pools, one out on the terrace, and one in the wellness area – there’s also a Jacuzzi and sauna. The billiard room and bar is a great spot for fun, while the alfresco dining area is ideal for family dinners – and your host can arrange for a private chef to whip up a feast.

Adriatic Oasis

You’ll find this villa in Zaton, a charming fishing village on Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast. Inside the home, it’s modern and well-considered with an open-plan living space for entertaining your loved ones and three quiet bedrooms that guarantee sweet dreams night after night. When you’re not kicking back on the sofa with a good book, you’ll be out on the terrace, soaking up the sunshine before bobbing about in the private pool. 

At lunchtime, fire up the brick barbecue and treat your brood to a grilled feast. After the plates are cleared and the little ones have let off some steam in the play area, head over to Štikovica Beach or take the short drive into Dubrovnik for its atmospheric Old Town, Renaissance Sponza Palace and pedestrianised Stradun. 

For What It's Worth

Just along the coast from the Pearl of the Adriatic – Dubrovnik – this sleek, modern villa overlooks the sea and is within walking distance of the beach. From the infinity pool, you can gaze out at the Elafiti Islands floating on the horizon. Cocktails in the outdoor lounge beneath the pergola are particularly good at sunset and alfresco dinners can be enjoyed next to an ancient olive tree.

Inside, the raw wood and ink-black motif gives a Japanese zen vibe to the open-plan living area. Choose to sit down to formal meals at the banquet-sized dining table, or perch up at the sleek breakfast bar for a quick start to the day. Alongside blissfully zen bedrooms upstairs, you’ll find a glass-fronted balcony overlooking the sparkling Adriatic.

The villa is located in Orašac, a little coastal village with a handful of beachy tavernas and bars serving local cuisine from the sea and mountains. The horseshoe-shaped pebble beach here slips away into emerald-green water and has a swim platform for hot days. If you want to discover Dubrovnik’s ancient history, the Old Town is just a half-hour drive or taxi ride away.  

Olive Trees & Modernism

Located in Trsteno, one of Dubrovnik's extended suburbs, Elafit has a lot going for it. The location is perfect for all those who want to explore the famous UNESCO heritage sites and escape to their calm villa when they're done with the city crowds. This home has a lovely view of the nearby archipelago of islands, which you can visit by taking a ferry from Dubrovnik (or make friends with the local fishermen). The pool is refreshing, the indoors are cosy and you'll have lots of hangouts to try out and simply enjoy the distant sounds of the sea. You might even recognise the nearby Trsteno Arboretum as a prominent filming location from Game of Thrones, and the local beach is only a couple of miles away.

Located in the fishing village of Brescine, this 18th-century stone villa may lack some of the modern bells and whistles of other homes in our collection, but look past its simple decor and you’ll find traditional character in its beamed ceilings, not to mention a sunny outdoor space where we reckon you’ll do most of your socialising. Splash around in the pool while admiring Adriatic views and gather under the pergola for alfresco barbecues and starlit drinks. When you’re ready to venture out for some exploring, you’ll find Sjekirica Beach a short drive away, and Dubrovnik with its UNESCO-listed Old Town is also easily reachable by car.

To find a villa that’s this extravagant, this spacious and this luxurious is a rarity so close to Dubrovnik’s famed Old Town. You’re just outside the Pile Gate here, the stone-carved entranceway to the shambling alleyways and oranged-roofed splendour of the Old Town. So you can pick your moment, before or after the cruise ship passengers fill the streets of the Old Town and explore when it’s quiet.

Waiting out the crowds at this sanctuary of a villa is no chore either. There’s a pristine swimming pool for cooling off in the heat of the day, a full outdoor kitchen with a wood-fired oven for lunches that last the afternoon, and myriad terraces and patios hidden by palm trees and verdant greenery. Pick your own Mediterranean vegetables from the garden and perhaps enjoy a game of bocce on the court in the sunshine. 

Inside, you can feel the 200-year-old history of this lavish villa, with frescoed ceilings in the bedrooms and white-wash wood keeping things breezy downstairs. As well as several lounges and living rooms for downtime, there’s a dedicated meeting room with a projector if you’re planning a corporate getaway or want to work remotely in style. Though if you want to spend your time here relaxing, there’s a Finnish sauna that’s sure to do the job.

If you want to soak up the history of Dubrovnik, this sixteenth-century townhouse, overlooking terracotta-roofed houses and cobbled streets, could be just what you’re looking for. Located at the heart of Dubrovnik Old Town, you’ll have all the top historical attractions on your doorstep and you’re just a short stroll from Stradun Street for shops, bars, and restaurants. The home’s traditional decor might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but the exposed beams, dark wooden furniture, and stone walls certainly suit the historic location. While the house sleeps six, the twin room is very small so is best suited to children or a single guest.

The Silver Wind 

In the heart of Dubrovnik, this modern apartment is within walking distance from all the action. Just a fifteen-minute stroll from Dubrovnik Old Town and five from Bellevue Beach, it’s a great base to come home to after discovering the many shops, restaurants and landmarks the city has to offer. One of our favourite parts is the terrace with its wonderful sea views, while a separate balcony is also shared between two bedrooms. Desks in each bedroom make working from home easy – and you can pay to use the spa, pool and fitness facilities at a nearby hotel. No wonder it caught our eye.

This towering villa sits in an enviable spot in central Dubrovnik. It's around a fifteen-minute walk to the shambling alleyways and historic sights of the famous Old Town, while also being a short stroll from the nearest pebble beach – Betina Cave Beach. But there’s plenty to keep you entertained at the villa itself.

Tiered terraces hang on the hillside, affording fabulous views of Lokrum island, floating out in the crystal Adriatic Sea. Out here, you’ve got a private pool to cool off and, one level up, a sunken Jacuzzi tub for a soothing soak. Dining in the shade of a parasol is a delight with that view to keep the group talking. 

We love the interior, where the light fitting above the dining table looks like an installation in a modern art gallery, and the armchairs could feature in a mid-century museum. Vibrant pictures adorn the walls throughout and the paint-splattered walls of the second living room feel like a work of art in itself. Painting isn’t the only pursuit celebrated in this home – the chrome kitchen could be the canvas for a professional chef and there’s a piano for the maestro of the group in the turret lounge. Bedrooms are sanctuaries, some with access to private balconies, but our favourite has to be the room at the top of the house with its selection of literature for a quiet read.

This villa is located on the Dalmatian Coast, a short walk from Sveti Jakov Beach and a ten-minute drive from Dubrovnik. Set across four floors, this home is ideal for large groups who want to holiday under the same roof without feeling on top of each other. Head outside, and you’ll find a swimming pool, Jacuzzi and unobstructed views of the water. The upper terrace is complete with a seating area and a table and chairs for alfresco suppers.
