Dating back a hundred years, this remarkable villa close to the south coastline of Split is a shining example of how a property's historical character can be preserved in the restoration process.

The home's interior retains an air of grandeur, with antique wooden furnishings, high ceilings and glossy tiled flooring, but there are plenty more modern additions. The bathrooms are ultra-sleek with a couple of large tubs and there's also a gym, sauna and library up on the first floor.

We'd be willing to bet that the swimming pool wasn't there when the home was built in the early twentieth century, but it'll be no less appreciated during the summer months — the same can be said for the Jacuzzi, too. One thing that hasn't changed in the intervening years is just how breathtaking the sea view is from this outdoor space and it makes for a beautiful backdrop as you dine under the pergola.

One thing we really love is the different options that the location offers. Plaža Ježinac sits just around the corner when you fancy a dip in the sea and the Old Town is only twenty minutes away on foot. The forests and walking routes of Marjan Hill are a ten-minute walk away, too.

Our favourite thing about this sleek, modern villa is the view from the swimming pool. Gazing out over the infinity edge, you can see a handful of green islands floating in the sparkling Adriatic Sea. The big terrace out the front is also home to sun loungers, a dining spot and a glorious sunken Jacuzzi. 

The villa itself feels as though glass boxes have been stacked on top of each other, taking full advantage of that fabulous sea view. Slide open the wall-sized glass doors in the living room to melt the barrier between indoors and outdoors and watch the boats drift by from the comfort of the leather sofas. The huge, dine-in kitchen area is more than big enough to handle the bustle of group breakfasts and the whole open-plan area is bathed in sunlight during the day.

Those that want to keep on top of their fitness schedule can make use of the home’s private gym, and soothe sore muscles in the sauna after. Bedrooms are crisp white and blue, made bright by walls of windows. And the main bedroom has its own private balcony.

Location-wise, you’re on the edge of Hvar Town, a 500-metre walk from the centre where harbourside bars and restaurants await.

No, you're not seeing triple. This villa perched on Ciovo Island actually boasts three separate living areas, kitchens and outside spaces. Although the contemporary design is a little understated, we think the sea views are pretty impressive, whether you're admiring them from the garden or the rooftop terrace. The swimming pool, meanwhile, is a welcome relief from the Croatian rays – as is the beach, just 5 metres from your doorstep. Even better, you'll have access to the resort's 24/7 gym as well as space to moor a boat – ideal for quick trips back and forth to Split.

You’ll wake up feeling refreshed from a good night’s sleep – the beds are oh so comfortable. Maybe you’ll whip up a breakfast of fresh fruit and local bread with honey, and take it out to the terrace. As you tuck in, you can plan your day – will you laze by the pool and soak up the sunshine all day? Or perhaps you’ll head to the beach? Brodarica beach is a fourteen-minute walk away and is one of many on this stretch of the coast. In the evening, fire up the barbecue and enjoy feasts on the terrace while the sun is setting. 

After a few days spent sunbathing, swimming and sipping wine, you might be rested enough to explore further afield. Šibenik is a beautiful city, one of the oldest on the Adriatic – it’s just eleven minutes away by car. Meander the narrow streets and admire the cathedral – it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
