It's also a ferry port that will take you to Makarska, so don't be afraid to venture out and explore beyond the island. Sumartina is an opulent villa, built as a one-stop-shop that you won't have to leave for anything but sightseeing. The views, the pool, the sauna, the wine cellar, plenty of sunshine and a private gym are all here to provide a well-rounded experience that will keep a large family (or a group of friends) occupied. If you're lucky enough to be coming with your own yacht, you'll even have access to the private mooring — the rest can rent a kayak or a paddle-board.

With enticing views of the Adriatic, you can understand why this villa captured our attention. The best spot for waterfront gazing is the balcony – a glass of wine, optional – but even the kitchen window catches a glimpse of the rolling waves. That sure makes washing up all the more exciting. Sadly, the garden doesn't show off the vistas, but with a private pool, alfresco dining area and children's playground, you'll still be set to worship the Croatian rays. And while the interior isn't nearly as impressive as the panoramas, it's comfortable nonetheless – plus the location is spot-on, walking distance from Pisak beach and village, and only a thirty-minute drive from magical Makarska.

The first thing that grabbed us was the private swim platform straight into the sparkling Adriatic Sea at this Brač villa. Spend days slipping into the crystal clear water, perfect for swimming in the protected bay, and dry out on a lounger on the stone terrace. Or perhaps take out one of the kayaks or paddle-boards. There's also a private mooring spot for boats and a swimming pool to boot. Dine on private terraces and balconies shaded by fragrant pine trees. Or, perhaps head into the quiet harbour town of Sumartin, a six-minute drive away, where the ferry runs to Makarska on the mainland. 

The home itself is a vision of boho-chic with artefacts from across the globe adorning raw wood shelves, cacti and straw lampshades. We can’t decide if our favourite piece is the hand-carved wooden dining table that feels as though it was acquired in a Balinese market, or the azulejo tiles in the master bathroom. The original stone features of the home have been restored too, like the rope-lined staircase and balustraded balconies. The only difficult choice here is which beautifully decorated bedroom you want to bag for your own.

Yes, this home is situated in a fairly secluded spot on Brač's eastern coastline, but it's as far from rustic as you could imagine. Not only are there luxurious amenities to be found behind the white walls – including a sauna, gym and billiards room – but there's just as much to keep you busy outside. The infinity swimming pool is blessed with a beautiful view of the Adriatic Sea, but if you want to get even closer to this body of water, the home has a private dock, from which you can explore the locale using the two kayaks and standup paddleboard available for guests to borrow.

You’ll have first-hand knowledge of this breathtaking landscape after your stay at this spectacular mountain villa. Set in a lush botanical garden with hundreds of flowering plants and a pretty fishpond, you’ll be relaxing among some of the most dramatic scenery that Croatia has to offer. In our opinion, the views of the hills and countryside are best enjoyed from the waters of the high-tech swimming pool, with its programmable massage and counter-swimming options. You’ll be enchanted by the atmospheric alfresco dining and lounging areas, while your kids will love the playground with its trampoline, slides and swings. The peace is palpable, but if it gets too quiet, you can pipe music to the pool area via the speakers. The interior has its own remarkable views of the pool and garden, the sweep of which can be seen from the windows of the luxurious bedrooms and their traditional fixtures and furnishings. This old-world feeling is countered by the ultra-modern bathroom, while the arched windows allow plenty of natural light to flood in.
