The little village of Sumartin is small enough to feel like you're away from the hustle and bustle of cities while keeping you well stocked with local goods from the nearby shops. It's also a ferry port that will take you to Makarska, so don't be afraid to venture out and explore beyond the island. Sumartina is an opulent villa, built as a one-stop-shop that you won't have to leave for anything but sightseeing. The views, the pool, the sauna, the wine cellar, plenty of sunshine and a private gym are all here to provide a well-rounded experience that will keep a large family (or a group of friends) occupied. If you're lucky enough to be coming with your own yacht, you'll even have access to the private mooring — the rest can rent a kayak or a paddle-board.

The first thing that grabbed us was the private swim platform straight into the sparkling Adriatic Sea at this Brač villa. Spend days slipping into the crystal clear water, perfect for swimming in the protected bay, and dry out on a lounger on the stone terrace. Or perhaps take out one of the kayaks or paddle-boards. There's also a private mooring spot for boats and a swimming pool to boot. Dine on private terraces and balconies shaded by fragrant pine trees. Or, perhaps head into the quiet harbour town of Sumartin, a six-minute drive away, where the ferry runs to Makarska on the mainland. 

The home itself is a vision of boho-chic with artefacts from across the globe adorning raw wood shelves, cacti and straw lampshades. We can’t decide if our favourite piece is the hand-carved wooden dining table that feels as though it was acquired in a Balinese market, or the azulejo tiles in the master bathroom. The original stone features of the home have been restored too, like the rope-lined staircase and balustraded balconies. The only difficult choice here is which beautifully decorated bedroom you want to bag for your own.  

Small Wishes

Thoughtful design is the essence of this home, with photographic prints, colourful textiles, and unique lights creating a space that feels as characterful as it does cohesive. It’s not style over substance though – with an infinity pool, games room, wine cellar and sauna, we think your stay here will be very comfortable indeed. The surroundings are as eye-catching as the home itself, as it’s perched right on the water of the quiet, scenic island of Brac. There’s a private mooring for boat hire, kayaks to take out on the water, and even snorkelling equipment if you’d like to get up close and personal with the sea life of the Adriatic.

Watch the boats drift by on an impossibly emerald and blue sea from the balconies and terraces of this home. It sits on the south coast of Brač – one of Croatia’s idyllic Dalmatian islands. A leisurely walk or short cycle (the home comes with bikes) sees you in the centre of the small town of Sumartin, with its pretty harbour and church spire jutting against the mountain backdrop. Plus, you’re just 20 metres from the rocky beach, where you can take one of the paddleboards out on the calm bay.

Lazy days can be indulged on the main terrace, plunging into the cool of the swimming pool and drying off on a lounger as you take in the view of the sea and pine-clad hills. There’s a summer-kitchen-style brick barbecue for lunches on the shaded patio and, on the first floor, the balconies look out over the water.

On the outside, it may look like a traditional, Venetian-style home, but inside it's all modernity. There is something Scandinavian about the kitchen, with its light-wood breakfast bar and open feel.
