Set just a few kilometres from the postcard-perfect sandy beaches of the Ionian and Adriatic Seas and even closer to the charming town of San Michele Salentino – the location is bang on.

This single-level villa places you in Puglia's interior, in a large patch of land dotted with olive trees – a perfect country retreat. Only 30 minutes from Brindisi and 10 from the charming San Vito Dei Normanni, you'll have the chance to explore Italy's heel here. At home, the living space is minimalist and functional – we felt it created a soothing atmosphere, although it lacks a little character. But step outside, and you'll see why we fell in love with the place – a gorgeous pool, alfresco dining and an outdoor kitchen mean you can spend plenty of time basking in the sun with a negroni, with nothing but the olive trees in view.

The Puglian countryside is renowned for its wonderful homes packing quirky features, and this villa is no different. Situated amongst olive groves and vineyards stretching as far as the eye can see, this rural paradise really is a treasure for the whole family to enjoy. We absolutely adore the way the modern interior beautifully contrasts the traditional vaulted building structure. You don't see ceilings as unique as this home's very often, and you'll likely have a smile on your face every time you wake up to views of it.

The outside of this home is just as brilliant. Feeling like something of a private arena with a dramatic walled exterior, the courtyard is certain to be the hub of your daily activities. Splash around in the heated swimming pool with the kids, or watch them from afar while you and your loved one share romantic cocktails at the marbled outdoor bar. Crank up the sound system with some jazzy music to really set the tone.

Being situated in Puglia means you're in a prime location to take advantage of Italy's beautiful south. Lovely beaches along the Adriatic Coastline can be reached within thirty-minutes by car. The host recommends a trip to Torre Guaceto. For a true Puglian experience, 'The White City', Ostuni, is a twenty-minute drive. Ostuni makes for a great day out soaking up authentic Italian culture. Closer to home, the local village is five-minutes by car and has everything you need, including restaurants, a pharmacy, a supermarket, and a bakery.

It's not a trip to Puglia without a stay in a trullo house, and this is a gorgeous one. Located in the rolling countryside, within easy reach of some of the area's historic towns, it's a great place to begin your Italian adventures. 

The traditional stone building has plenty of original touches – you'll love the conical roofs and decorative fireplace that provides a rustic charm. When you get hungry, you can head to the kitchen and cook up your favourite pasta dishes using fresh local ingredients. And, there's no better place to serve up your culinary creations than outside on the patio, as you breathe in the fresh air and admire the lush greenery surrounding you. 

When you fancy a day trip, there are plenty of places to visit in the surrounding area. The magnificent white city of Ostuni is around twenty minutes away by car, where you can stroll through the labyrinthine old quarter. The hilltop town of Martina Franca is around twenty-five minutes away, and if you fancy a day at the beach then you can drive to the coast in just over half an hour.

Set less than one hundred metres from Ceglie Messapica's bustling pedestrianised hub and just an easy drive from the coast and Ostuni, the location of this apartment is spot-on. While the period home's vaulted ceilings and exposed stonework are impressive, there are a few compromises to make. Expect a small kitchenette that's better suited to lighter bites rather than large slap-up meals, and there's no outdoor space to speak of. But for a bolthole this characterful, we can forgive that.

Between the olive groves of the Puglian countryside, this villa is a lesson in minimalism and sleek design. An inviting private pool is at the centre of the outdoor space and the dining terrace (with a charcoal barbecue) looks out over ancient olive trees. Accommodation is split between the main building, where you’ll find one of the bedrooms and the sparse living area, kept cool by white stone walls. One of the bedrooms is in its own lamia building and a further bedroom is in the annexe with garden access. It’s a short drive to Ostuni for days wandering the ancient streets, and Brindisi is a short hop in the car.

Though you’re still just a five-minute drive from the supermarkets, restaurants and winding old streets of San Michele Salentino, and the UNESCO trulli houses of Ostuni are a twenty-minute drive (perfect for a day trip).

It’s all about escaping the everyday and embracing the landscape here. Surrounded by acres of olive groves and fruit orchards, you’ve got a natural larder to play with – perfect for cooking alfresco in the outdoor kitchen. The entire living space is designed to be outdoors, with the lounge sofas sets around a fire pit and the full kitchen shaded by bamboo and looking out into the olive grove. There’s a swimming pool for cooling off, a hammock strung beneath a century-old olive tree and an outdoor shower tucked away too.

The only thing you’ll find inside is the bedroom and bathroom. It’s a world of sleek concrete in here, with a desk should you fancy a spot of writing (there’s no Wifi, it’s time to take it easy). There’s a small sofa should the weather take a turn, and it’s set by the picture-frame window so you can still enjoy a glimpse of the rust-red land. But this place is designed for living outdoors, under the warmth of the southern Italian sun.

Hard To Beat

Located between Ceglie Messapica and San Michele Salentino, this home is made up of two separate trullos, so it’s ideal if you’re looking for something traditional. While the additional building offers a little extra privacy, it’s not the most spacious home in the world (one of the beds is located within the living area), but it’s perfect for a small family or group of close friends. The garden offers plenty of picturesque spots to relax, from the swimming pool to the patio complete with an alfresco dining area and sofas.

Secluded away in the rugged beauty of the Puglian countryside, 15km south of the iconic trulli-covered town of Ostuni, this cone-shaped home is an absolute dream for anyone looking to experience a traditional southern Italian stay.

Stunning inside and out, this trullo is characterised by exposed stone walls, elegant archways and soaring ceilings. Some modern additions ensure its practicality as a gorgeous getaway perfect for multi-generational families or groups of friends, with spacious bedrooms and sleek en-suites ensuring plenty of privacy.

The outdoor space is a haven, with an inviting pool shrouded by olive trees and lush gardens, so you're free to top up your tan or seek solace in the shade of a nearby tree. In addition, there are a couple of fantastic outdoor dining areas and a wood-fired barbecue, where we'd be tempted to cook all our meals.

Set on a hectare of land and surrounded by fields, the trullo offers a tranquil space to unwind far removed from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. If you can rouse yourself from your relaxation, the quaint streets and piazzas of Ceglie Messapica are approximately fifteen minutes away. The best thing about this enchanting town? Its enviable array of restaurants that serve up mouthwatering Puglian specialities. 

Alternatively, drive 30km or so in the opposite direction, and you'll arrive on Puglia's awe-inspiring Adriatic coast. Its shimmering azure waters and white sand beaches are more than a match for the Maldives.

Live like a true Apulian in this restored trullo with sunset views. This home sports an alfresco kitchen, a hammock and an outdoor shower by the private pool. On a single level, it's easy to navigate and the garden is fenced, so you can keep an eye on kids or pets. There's not much within walking distance, so we recommend hiring a car. But markets, beaches, towns and restaurants are a short drive away, so essentials and days out are close by. For larger groups or joint family holidays, the neighbouring trullo might also be available to rent.

Sample all of Apulia's best bits from this villa set just a few minutes' drive from Ostuni's historic centre and not far from the beaches of the Adriatic coast. A great option for a family holiday, the open-plan living area overlooks the private infinity pool – perfect for keeping an eye on children playing. If we were being picky, the kitchen area inside feels a touch small compared to the rest of the villa. However, the outdoor pizza oven and barbecue beneath a covered pergola for alfresco dining make up for that. 

Barefoot Romance

Experience Puglia to its fullest at this stone trullo in the countryside outside San Michele Salentino. Though you’ll need a car to reach the ‘White City’ of Otsuni and the closest beach, Spiaggia di Torre Guaceto, its secluded spot offers tranquillity. The villa itself features a modern interior with plenty of space to socialise. And while this home accommodates seven, we think it’s better suited to a smaller group, on account of the sofa bed sleeping arrangements. Outside, this home really shines – the pristine blue pool set against the red earthy landscape, the outdoor lounge for sipping locally-produced Primitivo and the outdoor kitchen for sharing burrata salads and grilled polpo. Bliss.

When you're ready to explore, you'll find San Vito dei Normanni, Carovigno, and Ostuni within easy driving distance.
