This stylish apartment is right around the corner from Termini, Rome's biggest train station, so there's no doubt that the transport links are excellent. But many of the must-see sights can also be reached on foot, including the magnificent Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore five minutes away and The Colosseum just a little further, about a twenty-minute stroll. After fueling up on pasta and gelato at Mercato Centrale Roma across the street, set off for the Trevi Fountain, The Pantheon and The Spanish Steps, all reachable in under half an hour. When you're not off exploring, shopping or sipping Italian wine at one of the bars in this area, rest your tired feet back at home. We love the bold green colours and funky design – picture cowhide rugs, vibrant pop art and leafy wallpaper in the bedroom. The bathroom is also one of our favourites – it has a huge walk-in rain shower that's the perfect way to relax after a busy day. And this pad has more than enough room for two, so there's plenty of space to make yourself at home. Rome is a great city for spotting frescoes, but these mainly date back hundreds — if not thousands — of years. This apartment in the San Saba neighbourhood of the city shows that the tradition is far from long-dead. In the living room and many of the bedrooms, a modern variation on the wall paintings can be seen, adding colour and a sense of grandiosity to the interior.

Elsewhere, the design is wonderfully contemporary, particularly the curvy white dining chairs, sleek burgundy kitchen and equally pristine bathrooms. Another standout feature has to be the large private terrace, which has plenty of seating on which to enjoy the peace and quiet of this residential neighbourhood.

When you're in the mood for sightseeing, possibly the most famous fresco in the world — Michaelangelo's ceiling in the Sistine Chapel — takes just under twenty minutes to reach by taxi, but there are other notable attractions a bit closer, too. The Baths of Caracalla are ten minutes away on foot and the Colosseum takes about double that time.

It’s easy to work out where the owner found inspiration for this gallery-like apartment – all you need to do is wander around the local neighbourhood of Monti. Bustling cafés, ornate architecture, and ancient grandeur is all around. A nine-minute stroll in either direction will take you to two of the city’s most majestic sights – the Colosseum and the Foro Romano. With antiquity and arts all around you, the theme continues as you return home.

Many of us are content with painting walls in a calming, neutral tone, but the owner of this apartment had bigger plans. In a nod to the frescoes of the city, the walls are painted in trompe-l'œil effect – with clever positioning of the mirrors, the artwork appears in 3D. While the kitchen tiles and dining table have also enjoyed some brushwork, and this art project was just one effort in the restoration of this nineteenth-century home.

We love the terracotta-coloured tilework, adorned by vintage pieces of furniture dotted throughout the living space and bedroom. Pad across tiles and decorative rugs towards the double doors – this scene isn’t an optical illusion. You’ve got a private balconette with colourful flowers and scenes of Roman streets below. Is there any better spot for a chilled glass of prosecco?

It can't get more central than this – you'll be within walking distance of the Trevi Fountain, Villa Borghese, and countless eateries. After a long day on your feet, you'll appreciate the indoor Jacuzzi waiting for you back home. The overall design is contemporary and chic, featuring open-concept bathrooms that ooze luxury (though privacy is, of course, limited). Travelling as a group of six? Upon request, two guests can kip on single beds in the living area, but we think this home is best for four.

Just six minutes (on foot) to the emblematic attraction, and a traditional local area full of authentic eateries and beautiful tangerine buildings – you're perfectly placed here. Back home, you'll find a sociable open-plan living room, kitchen and dining area benefitting from sleek grey floors, tasteful artwork of the city by night and plenty of natural light pouring in. Wandering through the home, you'll notice a collection of art and literature books, quirky adornments and funky printed wallpapers in the bedrooms. There, those who are working from home during their stay will be able to power through emails at the dedicated desk spaces. The other thing that really makes the flat stick out is Simona and her hosting. She’s an absolute delight and will do everything possible to make your stay as good as it can be.

The Duchess is a comfortable place with lots going for it, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t start with that view. A city like Rome is full of views, but even so, this one is special, and the terrace itself is beautiful, with the furniture, the awning and the flowers all around (in summer, at least). This, along with the various antiques inside, makes you feel as if you’re in a Rome that existed 200 years ago, one that’s since been lost.

Brilliantly situated in Monti, one of Rome's most ancient neighbourhoods, this top-floor apartment is truly something special. There's no question that the private terrace is the crown jewel of the place. With a charming bistro table and an abundance of sunshine, it's the perfect spot to start the morning with an espresso and a pastry – and of course, end the evening with a bottle of Italian wine as the world passes by below you. 

Elsewhere, you'll find two quaint Juliet balconies – not ideal for sitting, but the view of the bustling street below is as Roman as it gets. The rest of the apartment is filled with light, packed with character and super stylish. Curl up on the cream-coloured sofa and watch a flick on Netflix, rustle up homecooked pasta in the kitchen and work from home at the desk in the second bedroom. There's more than enough space here to spread out and make yourself at home.

And the options for exploring are endless. The forum and the Colosseum are less than a ten-minute walk away – and there's plenty more sightseeing where that came from. Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore is also within walking distance and two metro lines are nearby for when you fancy visiting landmarks further into the city. What a great location this lovely home has – it's just a six-minute stroll from Emperor Nero's Golden House (Domus Aurea), while the Colosseum is eight minutes on foot and the Roman Forum is ten.

Back at this apartment, housed in a 19th-century building, there's a wonderful terrace with a comfy sofa, which is just what you need after a day exploring the Eternal City.
