This bold little place isn’t aimed at fans of neutral tones and understated design. Deep colours are everywhere, and they really help the apartment stand out from the crowd. It's not a huge space but it's extremely well laid-out and the lack of a seating area indoors is more than made up for by having a balcony with seats outside. The kitchenette is pretty well-equipped for its size and there's a little dining spot just for two. The host, Maria, really pushes the boat out when it comes to service – there’s a daily cleaning service, as well as free laundry, great breakfast options, and recommendations of all the places tourists don’t know about. If that wasn’t enough, it’s also only a couple of minutes walk from the Colosseum.

Gladiator Rose

Situated on the famous street Via Merulana in the San Giovanni district, this is an excellently located home in a lively bourgeois area with good transport links to the rest of the city. The rooms are large and bright, all recently renovated with minimal modern design. The style of the home is more industrial than cosy thanks to the steel kitchen, prevalence of clean lines and minimal contemporary lighting, but that doesn’t compromise the comfort of the home. We did notice that the WiFi was notably slow, however, which might pose a problem for some guests. 

The Silver Dove

Among streets peppered with restaurants and book shops on one corner, and ancient ruins on the next, Rome’s Castro Pretorio district is a melting pot of history and culture. You can find basilicas, palazzos, and even the Teatro dell'Opera all less than 600 metres from your front door on the famed Via Cavour. Just like its locale, your apartment is full of original character and style.

Set on the first floor of a traditional block, the views from the French windows and private balcony offer a fantastic display of the local lifestyle. You can spot the honey and pink tones of nearby Italian architecture, as mopeds whizz by on the streets and people chat at kerbside cafés (all while you sip prosecco on the outdoor seating).

If you can tear yourself away from these eye-catching city scenes, take a stroll through the home to explore. The original tiled floors are reminiscent of a Roman bath house, with ornate mosaic patterns throughout the lounge, hall, and bedroom. We love the melange of classic features alongside modern, psychedelic art on the walls and Starck-style ghost chairs for dining and working. Just like the ancient city, this home has entered the 21st century in the most elegant fashion. 

Biscotti

Located on Via Tiburtina, this area features a variety of shops, restaurants, bars, and clubs. And although Rome’s landmarks and attractions are a bit further away, the train station is just a short walk. The apartment itself is bright and includes a glazed sunroom. The living room can also accommodate additional guests, as it has a sofa bed for two people at full occupancy. Both bedrooms are large, too, making this apartment a comfortable base for exploring the Eternal City.

 The Light Place

Just steps away from Rome's Termini train station, this apartment is in a really convenient location. The Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major, the Roman Forum, the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps are all within walking distance too. There’s also a range of pizzerias, trattorias and cafes surrounding this home which has an open-plan living space with a modern kitchen. This room also sleeps two guests on a sofa bed when needed – the apartment is perfect for a city break.

Roman Gold Leaf

Step into the Art Nouveau sunroom of this period apartment and just soak up its vintage style and warm character. Surrounded by extraordinary windows – some frosted for privacy, others with stained glass – along with huge houseplants and antique furnishings, it's a striking space. Read on the sofa or linger over coffee at the dining table in the morning light. Overlooking a lush garden, it's certainly the highlight of the home. But there's plenty more to love about this place. Small, but perfectly functional, the kitchen leads to a hallway and a snug TV room with its own dining table. The pretty master bedroom is beautifully decorated, with plenty of storage and a desk, while the ensuite second bedroom has its own desk and a fabulous tiled floor. There's even the option of adding a cot if you're travelling as a family. With such easy access around the city from this spot, you'll be surprised how peaceful and quiet it is – yet it's surrounded by excellent shops and restaurants and it's just a fifteen-minute walk from the Colosseum.

Through Frosted Glass

If you prefer to be based near a green space, then this apartment could be perfect. It’s a short walk from the Villa Borghese with its vast park and historic buildings. The location is a little out of the main tourist area, but public transport links are close by and easy to use. With a terrace overlooking the rooftops of Rome, this home is a great place to relax after a day of sightseeing. The light living room here also sleeps two guests on a sofa bed at full occupancy. And while the kitchen has no oven and is compact, there are a variety of eateries in the locale.

Roman Rooftops

This apartment in Monti is just a short stroll from the iconic Colosseum. Other attractions within walking distance include the Roman Forum, Trevi Fountain and the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major, to name just a few. A lot of care and attention has gone into this home, and we love the blend of character features and modern furnishings. The good-sized open-plan living space is a great place to relax (this room also sleeps guests five and six on a sofa bed). Whether you’re a family or friends, your host is always on hand to ensure you have a fantastic stay.

The Monti Muse

The Duchess is a comfortable place with lots going for it, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t start with that view. A city like Rome is full of views, but even so, this one is special, and the terrace itself is beautiful, with the furniture, the awning and the flowers all around (in summer, at least). This, along with the various antiques inside, makes you feel as if you’re in a Rome that existed 200 years ago, one that’s since been lost. 


The Duchess

If you've been planning a Roman holiday and are craving a location that's within walking distance to top sights but away from the tourist throngs, this is it. Brush shoulders with the locals as you peruse the local cafes and shopping streets. Take a short walk to the Trevi Fountain and Colosseum. Enjoy home-cooked meals in the cosy kitchen here or taste local delicacies in one of the many restaurants within reach. Well-placed and with everything you could need for a comfortable stay, this place has lots to like about it. 

Roman Residence

There’s no doubting the USP of this bolthole apartment set in the heart of Rome’s Old Town. Just fling the windows wide to reveal the most monumental views of the Colosseum and the Imperial Forums, and it all becomes crystal clear.

Housed in a handsome period property befitting Rome’s historical centre, the majestic entrance makes quite the first impression. While inside, everywhere has been expertly reimagined for seamless, modern living with those polished finishes that Italians do so well. 

Pad out of the boutique-style bedroom and into the sleek, modern kitchen area to fire up the coffee machine. Then get together around the dining table to hatch plans for the day ahead – you’ll have views of the world’s most iconic amphitheatre right there. And if you’re impressed now, just wait until dusk when the decorative columns and arches are lit up – now that’s a memory right there.

When it’s time to explore, you won’t have far to go. The entrance to the mighty Colosseum is just a four-minute walk from your door – best seen early in the mornings to beat the crowds. Then take your pick from the other must-see sights reachable on foot. The Pantheon, Spanish Steps, and the Trevi Fountain are less than a half-an-hour stroll away – or a smidge longer with pitstops for pizza al taglio and gelato along the way.
