You might think that you have to pick between homes that respect tradition and those that embrace more contemporary design, but villas such as this one in the Florentine countryside show that you can have both if you choose wisely.

Step behind the front door and you'll spot some of the rustic features common in the region's homes, be that wooden ceiling beams, stone archways or the large fireplace in the lounge. However, the glisteningly modern kitchen packed full of appliances will be a treat for the culinarily gifted among guests, and the bathrooms are equally as easy on the eye.

Perhaps the most striking recent addition to the address lies beyond the four walls in the shared garden – it's remarkably easy to picture long afternoons spent gliding through the swimming pool before drying off on a lounger under the Tuscan sun. The picturesque outdoor space is completed with a ping pong table and a private terrace on which to enjoy alfresco feasts.

The location is certainly secluded, but there's a shop 400 metres from the front door and a restaurant another 200 metres beyond that. You're more than welcome to spend your time exploring the local Poggiosole region, but the city of Florence takes about half an hour in the car to reach and rewards those that make the journey with some of the most famous artworks in the world.

A Midsummer Daydream

With far-reaching views and an abundance of places to enjoy them, it’s not hard to see why this contemporary villa caught our eye. Inside is modern and sleek, perfectly proportioned for a family or group of friends and with the added bonus of a gym and sauna. But outdoors is where this home comes alive. Swim in the private pool, play ping pong, relax on the sun-drenched terrace or dine alfresco – the options are endless. If you can tear yourself away, there’s plenty to keep you occupied in the surrounding area, too. Head to historic Grosseto, the wild beaches of the coast, the vineyards around Montalcino, or the hot springs at Terme di Saturnia.

Rolling Hills of Tuscany

It may be less than a thirty-minute drive from the spectacular Renaissance city of Florence, but this home feels like another world. Located up in the hills, you'll discover a spectacular villa – complete with a clock tower – just outside the small village of Cellai, where time seems to stand still. 

Pad across terracotta-tiled floors, with wood beam ceilings above, and discover rooms filled with character and charm, where period features and modern touches sit effortlessly alongside one another. Nowhere is this better displayed than in the contemporary kitchen and adjoining dining room with its antique stove. Each of the four bedrooms blends rustic charm with supreme comfort, while the bathrooms are fitted out with beautiful tiles and gleaming marble for a touch of luxury.

Step outside and you'll discover a lush landscape of terraced gardens, an inviting pool and breathtaking views over the Tuscan terrain. Your hosts recommend making the trip to Forno La Chiocciola, where you can stock up on Florentine speciality flatbread, schiaccata, each morning. Afterwards, place yourself poolside and settle in for a day of sunbathing, interrupted only by refreshing dips in the water and trips to the kitchen to get some more of that delicious bread. 

The Breadbasket

Rustic charm meets modern luxury in this hilltop Tuscan home. Boasting fantastic views of Montalcino, we think the garden is the perfect spot to enjoy the sunshine and fresh air. Entertain yourself with a dip in the private pool, play a game on the bocce court, or tuck into an Italian feast on the terrace. Step inside and you'll find seven en-suite bedrooms and a living space brimming with traditional character. Siena, Buonconvento, and other picturesque towns are within driving distance, making it easy to explore. There's also the option to arrange wine tastings, private dining, horseback riding, and other experiences – it's no wonder this home caught our eye.

Hilltop Aria

This Tuscan villa is perfect for large groups. With a main house and separate annex rented as one home, each with its own living area, kitchen/dining area, and bathrooms, you can holiday together while still enjoying your own space. While the traditional decor may not be to everyone’s tastes, we’re sure everyone will appreciate the outdoor space – with spectacular views across the Tuscan countryside, a private pool, and alfresco dining, what's not to like? Location-wise, you’re 9 kilometres from Casciano di Murlo for shops and restaurants, 6 kilometres from the natural hot springs of Terme di Petriolo where you can enjoy a soak, and 30 kilometres from historic Siena.

Charming Countryside Villa

Set among olive groves and cypress trees, this villa overlooks the rolling Tuscan countryside all the way to the medieval towers of San Gimignano. The style is contemporary country chic – think exposed beams, brick archways and warm, earthy colours. The living room is on the smaller side, but if it's relaxation you're after, there's a spa with a wood sauna, hammam, and jacuzzi, plus an outdoor infinity pool. Dining is best enjoyed on the terrace, soaking up those panoramic views. Fancy a change of scenery? There are villages to explore, local vineyards to visit and hiking trails winding through the surrounding hills.

Tuscan Dreamcatcher

With its sunny swimming pool, gorgeous views, and country charm, we think you’ll love life in this Umbrian villa. There are shady terraces to relax with a book or enjoy a leisurely lunch, cosy and characterful rooms, and a farmhouse kitchen for turning regional fare into an Italian feast. The main house has four double bedrooms, and if eight or more of you are staying, you’ll also have access to a separate converted barn and cottage where there are two extra bedrooms. As for amenities, nearby Città della Pieve has restaurants and bars for entertaining evenings, and you’ll also be in one of the best spots for sampling local wines at one of the area’s prestigious wineries.

A Painted Place

Elegant and unique, this home makes for an excellent base in Tuscany. It’s in the village of Impruneta on the outskirts of Florence, surrounded by countryside, olive groves and vineyards – it also borders the Chianti Classico region. The centre of Florence is only 13 kilometres away, making day trips a breeze. The decor is traditional, with antiques at every turn, so it may not suit everyone. But for a break to Italy that feels a little like stepping back in time, it’s a great choice. 

The Falling Stones

Once owned by winemaker Marchesi Torrigiani, this beautiful hillside villa still features the vineyards that were once, and will likely always be, the heart of this farmland. A beautiful sight, it’s only marginally rivalled by the view of the Chianti Hills which is sprawled out right before you from the elevated position of this home. When you walk the grounds in search of new angles to photograph, you might stumble upon a wood-burning oven and picnic style-benches. Get the family together and venture down to barbecue lunch and dine alfresco in the shade of the towering trees. 

With another home on the property, you’ll likely make new friends around the communal pool when you’re spending lazy days in the sunlounger. Catch up on a novel, drink in hand, as the aroma of olives from the nearby tree drifts to you on the breeze.

Away from the home, you can find the mediaeval village of San Donato only minutes away. Walk the winding streets, marvel at the architecture, and sit down at one of the local restaurants for a beautiful lunch before returning home for an afternoon nap, followed by a glass of chianti wine out on the terrace.

Vineyards & Red Earth

This villa captures the rustic charm of old Italy. Surrounded by 40 hectares of land boasting olive groves, vineyards, orchards, and meadows with grazing horses, it’s an idyllic escape into the Tuscan countryside. A country road leads to the UNESCO hamlet of Castiglione d'Orcia. The garden is home to a rustic outdoor cooking station, a large, shaded table, and a full outdoor lounge. There’s a touch of modernity to the private, heated pool and you’ll find a sauna hidden amid the trees. The main villa is split across two levels and is a vision of old-world Italy and there is a separate annexe with further bedrooms, a second full kitchen and an open-plan living room. 

Rusticana Retreat

This restored farmhouse is situated on a family-owned estate of rolling hills, organic farmland, vineyards, and olive groves. From its hilltop position, it offers sweeping views of the surroundings and all the way to Montalcino. Buonconvento, one of the prettiest medieval villages in the region, is a short drive away, and Siena is slightly further afield. The outside space includes a private pool with sun loungers and deck chairs, as well as a bocce court and a ping-pong table. Inside, the villa blends traditional features like wooden beams with modern comforts and style. It’s an attractive home-from-home.
