This home is a lesson in history, from the Roman era of lavish bathhouses and marble statues, to the present day. Spa days in the privacy of your home await with an indoor pool that could rival the ancient baths of old Rome and a sauna and Turkish hammam to complete the experience. And the state-of-the-art gym is a reminder that you’re still in the 21st century. On sunny days, pad from the indoor pool to the outdoor pool, lined with loungers. From here, a stairway leads to the rest of the gardens where 15,000 square metres are filled with marble statues, linden trees and vast lawns. You could get lost exploring each manicured area bursting with herbs and flowers. 

Heading inside this 17th-century villa, you’ll find sitting rooms adorned with frescoes, gilded mirrors and arched windows looking out over the vineyards and rolling hills of your locale. There are several lounges to choose from, but our favourite might have to be the art-deco-style room with its 1920s bar for rounds of cocktails and a grand piano to set the soundtrack yourself. There’s no denying that each bedroom and bathroom feels grand, as though designed for Italian nobility with marble finishes and Jacuzzi tubs. But, heading into the kitchen, the scene changes to one of farmhouse rusticana, with all the mod cons of the 21st century to help you cater for the group.

The location is a secluded one, tucked away amidst the agricultural landscape of Emilia Romagna (considered the larder of Italy). The Adriatic Sea is a short drive away should you wish to hit the beach and there are plenty of places to pause for an espresso or stock up on the famous produce of the region in the nearby town of Forli. One thing not to miss is the view from ‘The Balcony of Romagna’ at the medieval borgo of Bertinolo, just a kilometre away.

This home is a true haven nestled right in the heart of Arezzo. With its luscious garden and rustic interior, it's the perfect place to kick back and relax away from the hustle and bustle. 

Step inside, and you'll be enchanted by the traditional touches, from the terracotta tiles to the original fireplace and wooden ceiling beams. Budding chefs can whip up their favourite dishes in the kitchen, using the fresh Italian herbs provided. And, the leafy garden provides the ideal spot for a sundowner – open a bottle of Pinot Grigio and relax on the patio as you make some plans for the following day. 

The hilltop Arezzo Cathedral is not to be missed – admire the painted ceilings before strolling through the medieval town, gelato in hand. The nearby Piazza Grande is one of the most beautiful in the region, and is an awe-inspiring setting for a coffee or something stronger. And, if you want to explore more of eastern Tuscany then there's plenty to see just a short drive away – from vineyards to castles, there's something for everyone.

It may be less than a thirty-minute drive from the spectacular Renaissance city of Florence, but this home feels like another world. Located up in the hills, you'll discover a spectacular villa – complete with a clock tower – just outside the small village of Cellai, where time seems to stand still. 

Pad across terracotta-tiled floors, with wood beam ceilings above, and discover rooms filled with character and charm, where period features and modern touches sit effortlessly alongside one another. Nowhere is this better displayed than in the contemporary kitchen and adjoining dining room with its antique stove. Each of the four bedrooms blends rustic charm with supreme comfort, while the bathrooms are fitted out with beautiful tiles and gleaming marble for a touch of luxury.

Step outside and you'll discover a lush landscape of terraced gardens, an inviting pool and breathtaking views over the Tuscan terrain. Your hosts recommend making the trip to Forno La Chiocciola, where you can stock up on Florentine speciality flatbread, schiaccata, each morning. Afterwards, place yourself poolside and settle in for a day of sunbathing, interrupted only by refreshing dips in the water and trips to the kitchen to get some more of that delicious bread.

We think it's a great fit for families with a lovely private garden as well as flexible sleeping arrangements – the twin beds can be converted into doubles upon request. Keen cooks will love the modern chef's kitchen for preparing alfresco suppers – though if you feel like dining out, the nearby village of Volpaia and the market town of Radda are both just a short drive away. You will need to hire a car to get around here, and the drive will often be hilly and uneven.

In the green hills of Mugello, this villa offers the peace and tranquillity of the countryside but is just a forty-minute drive from Florence. Head to Italy’s capital of culture to explore the endless collections of the Ufizzi and dine overlooking the Ponte Vecchio. 

The home itself is traditionally stone-built, with the wooden ceilings on show, an old hearth in the dining room and the farm’s well still on display. Sprawling grounds house a swimming pool with a view over the rolling hills beyond, and a rustic-style loggia for outdoor dining – perfect when you're serving something cooked with fresh vegetables straight from the home's veggie patch. The stone-built, wood-fired barbecue is ideal for summer evenings. 

Apart from Tuscan farmhouse tradition, inside you’ll find some vintage touches like a wireless radio from the early 20th century, and antique furnishings. The old kitchen has been preserved with museum-like care (with a traditional bread over that still works), but the modern kitchen is a sleek, professional affair with slate-grey units and a huge island at its core.

Whether you're keen to visit the local wineries or venture further afield to Siena or Florence, this is a prime spot to explore the Chianti countryside.

Traditional and romantic, this charming Tuscan home is in wine country, and we can practically smell the freshly uncorked Chianti from here. Beautiful to look at, both inside and out, and surrounded by lovely gardens, this is the kind of place where everything can just slow right down. Stroll to the pool for a morning swim, laze in the hammock in the shade of the trees, and casually put together delightful meals using the finest local ingredients. Inside, there are tiled floors, shuttered windows and exposed timbers, making for a rustic feel. There's a country kitchen for dining inside, but we're guessing you'll make the most of the covered terrace and eat alfresco each and every day. There’s nothing better than a wine tasting experience in these parts, so we recommend you sample the product at the Castello di Albola winery, just a ten-minute drive away. And if you're tempted to head off for a cultural day out, the stunning Renaissance city of Siena is just fifty minutes away.

If you’re looking for an escape from it all, this could be the home for you. Set on a private road deep in the woods, this Chianti villa has tranquillity running through its core. We love the seamless blend of modern furniture with the traditional building here, but the outdoor space is our biggest winner. Sun-kissed terraces, a hot tub, a private pool, alfresco dining areas – what’s not to love? If you can tear yourself away, it’s a mere ten-minute drive to the wine-making town of Gaiole, which is well worth a visit.

This incredible eighteenth-century villa in the heart of Tuscany is a wonderful setting for a wedding or just a gathering of your nearest and dearest. With views out over the Tuscan hills, the spectacularly sited pool, waterlily-filled ponds and courtyards make it worth the stay alone. The gravelled terrace overlooking the undulating countryside can be set up for special events, and there’s a built-in barbecue for a more casual alfresco feast. Exploring the grounds, spread over a hectare, you'll find tennis courts, secluded terraces and woodland walks.

Step inside to find wooden beams, traditional shuttered windows, arched alcoves and soaring high ceilings, all of which were designed by the architect Massimiliano Soldani, who created the residence as his private home. The dining room can host the whole group, and several lounges and sitting rooms come adorned with bold modern artworks and chandeliers beneath the wooden ceilings. There are two kitchens to choose from, one in holiday-cheery canary yellow, with an old brick fireplace still ensconced in the wall. 

You’re in the heart of the countryside here, with Arezzo and Siena within day-tripping distance. Those that like a walk will appreciate the hike up to Torre di Galatrona, which starts just beyond the villa’s boundary, or perhaps a day at the winery next door.

All eight bedrooms blend rustic charm with utmost comfort to create havens of relaxation where you can take a break from socialising and appreciate the peace and quiet of your surroundings. Throughout the spacious interiors, you'll find several seating areas where you can kick back and relax with a podcast. In addition, dining areas can comfortably accommodate the maximum number of each apartment for sociable meals with family and friends in true Italian style. For the culture vultures, we'd suggest spending a day (at the very least) wandering the backstreets and alleyways of Florence. In our opinion, getting lost on a self-guided tour is the best way to get to know the artistic, architectural and cultural history of Tuscany.

We're completely infatuated with this home's rustic charm. It's set across two pastel-hued and ivy-clad villas, making it the perfect base for families and large groups. We especially love the majestic glass-walled recreation space, dressed to the nines for entertaining, with a banquet-style dining table, cosy lounge, ping pong and billiards table. 

Inside, it's a quaint canvas of terracotta tiled floors, shuttered windows and timber beamed ceilings, while contemporary comforts promise a want-for-nothing stay. But our favourite spot has to be up on the dining terrace, which provides some beautiful views over the hilly surroundings and is ideal for alfresco feasts together.
