A ten-minute drive from Mugello’s famous International Racing Circuit, this home is an ideal stay for motorsports fans and thrill-seekers alike. Of course, it’s not all about speed. If you’re taking your holiday at a more sedate pace, we think you’ll love lounging by the pool and exploring the olive groves and vineyards of the surrounding countryside. With traditional arched doorways, aged wooden beams, and beautiful antique furniture, there’s no doubt you’re in the romantic region of Tuscany. The indoor dining room with its oil paintings and long family-style table next to the old hearth could almost rival the outdoor dining under the vine-clad pergola. Just a twenty-five-minute drive from this famous track, and an hour from Florence, this rustic villa is a charming escape to rural life. Set on sloped, landscaped gardens with leafy trees, trailing foliage, and bright Mediterranean flowers, its traditional airs give way to some playful features. Keep the kids entertained with football on the five-a-side pitch in the garden, or head inside via the basement for foosball and a vintage pinball machine (‘big kids’ also welcome). Some might prefer a swim in the private pool, or sipping a negroni on one of the multiple patios, the choice is yours. This home is a lesson in history, from the Roman era of lavish bathhouses and marble statues, to the present day. And the state-of-the-art gym is a reminder that you’re still in the 21st century. On sunny days, pad from the indoor pool to the outdoor pool, lined with loungers. From here, a stairway leads to the rest of the gardens where 15,000 square metres are filled with marble statues, linden trees and vast lawns. You could get lost exploring each manicured area bursting with herbs and flowers. 

Heading inside this 17th-century villa, you’ll find sitting rooms adorned with frescoes, gilded mirrors and arched windows looking out over the vineyards and rolling hills of your locale. There are several lounges to choose from, but our favourite might have to be the art-deco-style room with its 1920s bar for rounds of cocktails and a grand piano to set the soundtrack yourself. There’s no denying that each bedroom and bathroom feels grand, as though designed for Italian nobility with marble finishes and Jacuzzi tubs. But, heading into the kitchen, the scene changes to one of farmhouse rusticana, with all the mod cons of the 21st century to help you cater for the group.

The location is a secluded one, tucked away amidst the agricultural landscape of Emilia Romagna (considered the larder of Italy). The Adriatic Sea is a short drive away should you wish to hit the beach and there are plenty of places to pause for an espresso or stock up on the famous produce of the region in the nearby town of Forli. One thing not to miss is the view from ‘The Balcony of Romagna’ at the medieval borgo of Bertinolo, just a kilometre away.

Head into town to pick up some fresh local produce to cook on the stone barbecue, or make pizzas in the bell tower’s wood-fired oven. Inside, you’ll find wooden beams, exposed brick walls, stone staircases and typically Tuscan decor, so it’ll feel like another world when you step into the basement, with its Jacuzzi room painted with palm trees and a brilliant yellow sky.

This former hunting lodge was once used by the wealthy and powerful Medici family. Steeped in history, it sits in the green hills of the Florentine Mugello, with its own large gardens surrounded by vineyards. There are remnants of the past everywhere, with ancient beamed ceilings, archways and tiled floors, but it's been carefully brought up to date with an eclectic mix of vintage and modern furnishings. And need we point out those fabulous chandeliers in some of the bedrooms? Take the sweeping steps down to the pool or pull up a lounger amid the scented flowers and lemon trees. Walking in the garden here, you’ll also find an area dedicated to aromatic herbs – the perfect addition to a Tuscan lunch in the dining area under a wisteria-covered pergola. It's just a short drive to the freshwater oasis of Lake Bilancino and a day trip to Florence is no more than forty minutes away by car.

When you're not unwinding on a lounger by the pool, discover the treehouse, a fairy-tale addition to the garden that will delight children and adults alike. Sit up here with a book and admire the lush gardens from above, before taking lunch in the winter garden. For guests who'd prefer to be even closer to the garden, an annexe bedroom features sliding glass doors, so you're never more than a few steps from the lawn. This annexe also features gym equipment for those looking for a more difficult workout than swimming lengths. You're just a short drive from the city of Forli, but you could equally spend your days travelling through the countryside of Emilia-Romagna, visiting towns like Bagno di Romagna, where you can unwind in thermal waters.

Anyone for tennis? Lovers of the game will be thrilled with the large courts here. Prepare some strawberries and cream for your own version of Wimbledon. The star attraction, though, is this grand, secluded home high on a hill with views over the verdant Tuscan valleys. Enjoy breakfast while gazing out over the peaceful hillside or lounge by the pool while taking in the glorious scent of the surrounding pines. Later, relax over a long lunch of antipasto under the shade of the gazebo with its billowing drapes. Then go for a walk on the winding terracotta paths to find your own slice of heaven in the magnificent gardens. 

Inside, the interiors are no less impressive. Select a book from the library and recline on the chaise longue or take afternoon tea in the sunroom overlooking the silvery olives. We could spend much of our time just wandering around this vast home, discovering all the intriguing antiques and objet d'art. There's so much to do here, but if you do want to venture out, you'll be spoilt for choice. 

Spend the day at the famous Montecatini Thermal Waters (thirty-three minutes by car) and perhaps try their mud bath therapies or visit the many museums in Pistoia, a twenty-minute drive away. If you find yourself in this historic city in July, check out the Pistoia Blues Festival.



Vista Collina

Although this home is situated on an estate, just a ten-minute walk from communal amenities, including restaurants, bars and a spa, guests staying here have their own garden and infinity swimming pool with a hot tub. Daily housekeeping means you won’t have to lift a finger and if you’d like a professional to take care of mealtimes, a private chef service can be arranged. Should you fancy a change of scenery, Bologna is reached in around twenty minutes by car, while Modena is reached in about an hour.

This Tuscan Villa caught our eye for its lush garden, surrounded by trees – you’ll certainly feel like you’ve escaped to the country when you’re lounging by the pool here. Located in the Mugello Valley, you’re a short drive from Borgo San Lorenzo, where you’ll find shops and restaurants, and 36 kilometres from the ever-popular Florence. While the kitchen area is small and there isn’t a huge amount of space for preparing meals, there’s a barbecue outside and the covered loggia is perfect for alfresco dining.

Mugello Retreat

With a fantastic hilltop location close to the small medieval hamlet of Monteleone, this striking, quirky home deftly blends old with new, tradition and modernity, offering a host of handy amenities within classically elegant surroundings. Feel transported in both space and time as you meander through the pretty spaces of the interior, finding a favourite corner in which to park yourself for the afternoon with that new novel you've been carrying around, an aromatic cup of coffee, or something a little stronger (there's even a sun-filled reading room, so no excuse not to make some headway with that book of yours).

Outside, apart from the fabulous views, you will find carefully maintained romantic gardens simply made for strolling around and slowing down to appreciate the little joys in life. Take a big breath in as you take in the vista, smelling the heady aromas of the garden's many plants. Then, why not dip into the waters of the pool for a quick afternoon dip before heading off to refresh for dinner?

Having worked up an appetite, test out the lovely traditional kitchen and try to replicate some of the delicious dishes you’ve come across on your travels around the region, loading the dining table with delicious cheese, cured meats, and pasta. Bellissima!
