In the green hills of Mugello, this villa offers the peace and tranquillity of the countryside but is just a forty-minute drive from Florence. Head to Italy’s capital of culture to explore the endless collections of the Ufizzi and dine overlooking the Ponte Vecchio. 

The home itself is traditionally stone-built, with the wooden ceilings on show, an old hearth in the dining room and the farm’s well still on display. Sprawling grounds house a swimming pool with a view over the rolling hills beyond, and a rustic-style loggia for outdoor dining – perfect when you're serving something cooked with fresh vegetables straight from the home's veggie patch. The stone-built, wood-fired barbecue is ideal for summer evenings. 

Apart from Tuscan farmhouse tradition, inside you’ll find some vintage touches like a wireless radio from the early 20th century, and antique furnishings. The old kitchen has been preserved with museum-like care (with a traditional bread over that still works), but the modern kitchen is a sleek, professional affair with slate-grey units and a huge island at its core. 

The town of Scarperia e San Piero is a four-minute drive away to stock up on supplies and there’s even a country restaurant just behind this home if you don’t fancy driving.

If you’re taking your holiday at a more sedate pace, we think you’ll love lounging by the pool and exploring the olive groves and vineyards of the surrounding countryside. With traditional arched doorways, aged wooden beams, and beautiful antique furniture, there’s no doubt you’re in the romantic region of Tuscany. The apartment features a vaulted roof and simple, fuss-free decor. It’s a comfortable and charming base for a holiday, and you’ll have access to the communal gardens and heated plunge pool – what more could you ask for?

This Tuscan Villa caught our eye for its lush garden, surrounded by trees – you’ll certainly feel like you’ve escaped to the country when you’re lounging by the pool here. Located in the Mugello Valley, you’re a short drive from Borgo San Lorenzo, where you’ll find shops and restaurants, and 36 kilometres from the ever-popular Florence. While the kitchen area is small and there isn’t a huge amount of space for preparing meals, there’s a barbecue outside and the covered loggia is perfect for alfresco dining.

Mugello Retreat

This masterpiece of a home provides beauty and interest from every angle. Behind the rich terracotta exterior, you will find a contemporary haven with natural colours brought alive through wonderful statues and vibrant artwork. Indulge in a little quiet time of an evening as you relax in the hot water of the whirlpool tub in one of the ensuites, guaranteeing you a restful night's sleep to follow. The bedrooms are cool and calming, a wonderful contrast. 

In the morning, stroll across the decking and you’ll be met with a crystal blue pool and hot tub. This home is a lesson in history, from the Roman era of lavish bathhouses and marble statues, to the present day. Spa days in the privacy of your home await with an indoor pool that could rival the ancient baths of old Rome and a sauna and Turkish hammam to complete the experience. And the state-of-the-art gym is a reminder that you’re still in the 21st century. On sunny days, pad from the indoor pool to the outdoor pool, lined with loungers. From here, a stairway leads to the rest of the gardens where 15,000 square metres are filled with marble statues, linden trees and vast lawns. You could get lost exploring each manicured area bursting with herbs and flowers. 

Heading inside this 17th-century villa, you’ll find sitting rooms adorned with frescoes, gilded mirrors and arched windows looking out over the vineyards and rolling hills of your locale. There are several lounges to choose from, but our favourite might have to be the art-deco-style room with its 1920s bar for rounds of cocktails and a grand piano to set the soundtrack yourself. There’s no denying that each bedroom and bathroom feels grand, as though designed for Italian nobility with marble finishes and Jacuzzi tubs. But, heading into the kitchen, the scene changes to one of farmhouse rusticana, with all the mod cons of the 21st century to help you cater for the group.

The location is a secluded one, tucked away amidst the agricultural landscape of Emilia Romagna (considered the larder of Italy). The Adriatic Sea is a short drive away should you wish to hit the beach and there are plenty of places to pause for an espresso or stock up on the famous produce of the region in the nearby town of Forli. One thing not to miss is the view from ‘The Balcony of Romagna’ at the medieval borgo of Bertinolo, just a kilometre away. 

The Roman Spa

This former hunting lodge was once used by the wealthy and powerful Medici family. Steeped in history, it sits in the green hills of the Florentine Mugello, with its own large gardens surrounded by vineyards. There are remnants of the past everywhere, with ancient beamed ceilings, archways and tiled floors, but it's been carefully brought up to date with an eclectic mix of vintage and modern furnishings. And need we point out those fabulous chandeliers in some of the bedrooms? Take the sweeping steps down to the pool or pull up a lounger amid the scented flowers and lemon trees. Walking in the garden here, you’ll also find an area dedicated to aromatic herbs – the perfect addition to a Tuscan lunch in the dining area under a wisteria-covered pergola. It's just a short drive to the freshwater oasis of Lake Bilancino and a day trip to Florence is no more than forty minutes away by car.
