For guests who'd prefer to be even closer to the garden, an annexe bedroom features sliding glass doors, so you're never more than a few steps from the lawn. This home is a lesson in history, from the Roman era of lavish bathhouses and marble statues, to the present day. And the state-of-the-art gym is a reminder that you’re still in the 21st century. On sunny days, pad from the indoor pool to the outdoor pool, lined with loungers. From here, a stairway leads to the rest of the gardens where 15,000 square metres are filled with marble statues, linden trees and vast lawns. You could get lost exploring each manicured area bursting with herbs and flowers. 

Heading inside this 17th-century villa, you’ll find sitting rooms adorned with frescoes, gilded mirrors and arched windows looking out over the vineyards and rolling hills of your locale. There are several lounges to choose from, but our favourite might have to be the art-deco-style room with its 1920s bar for rounds of cocktails and a grand piano to set the soundtrack yourself. There’s no denying that each bedroom and bathroom feels grand, as though designed for Italian nobility with marble finishes and Jacuzzi tubs. But, heading into the kitchen, the scene changes to one of farmhouse rusticana, with all the mod cons of the 21st century to help you cater for the group.

The location is a secluded one, tucked away amidst the agricultural landscape of Emilia Romagna (considered the larder of Italy). The Adriatic Sea is a short drive away should you wish to hit the beach and there are plenty of places to pause for an espresso or stock up on the famous produce of the region in the nearby town of Forli. One thing not to miss is the view from ‘The Balcony of Romagna’ at the medieval borgo of Bertinolo, just a kilometre away.

Outside, apart from the fabulous views, you will find carefully maintained romantic gardens simply made for strolling around and slowing down to appreciate the little joys in life. Take a big breath in as you take in the vista, smelling the heady aromas of the garden's many plants. Then, why not dip into the waters of the pool for a quick afternoon dip before heading off to refresh for dinner?

Having worked up an appetite, test out the lovely traditional kitchen and try to replicate some of the delicious dishes you’ve come across on your travels around the region, loading the dining table with delicious cheese, cured meats, and pasta. Bellissima!

Should you fancy a change of scenery, Bologna is reached in around twenty minutes by car, while Modena is reached in about an hour.

Centuries-old, this farmhouse located in the heart of the Euganean Hills National Park is steeped in history. Owned by the noble Papafava dei Carraresi family since the thirteenth century, the home entwines its charming rural setting with hundreds of years of family history to create a unique space that is sure to captivate the curiosity of its guests. 

Across the property, you'll find numerous different seating areas designed around the arts of relaxation and socialising. The space is idyllic for those in larger groups or celebrating special occasions such as family reunions, birthdays and weddings.

When the sun comes out, there's no better place to soak up some vitamin D than from around the garden's elegant swimming pool. Perch in one of the recliner chairs under the sun umbrellas with a book in hand, before going for a stroll around the herb and flower gardens that surround the villa. 

Located in a private park spreading over 300 acres of rolling hills and green meadows, the home rests at the foot of the Euganean Hills National Park – meaning country strolls or bike rides (with bikes provided by the host) in the local vicinity are simply a must. Soak up the fresh country air fragranced by the wildflowers, fruit trees and plants that grow here. The entire local area offers infinite peace and serenity, yet it remains within easy reach (by car) of other small towns and villages of the region – not to mention the city of Venice which is just a fifty-minute drive away. 

When coming together as a group, serve up alfresco barbecued meals under the pergola paired with local Italian wine. For games nights, get competitive over a round of ping pong before settling down in the living area or suite bedrooms (spread across the main house and the annexe) for more tranquil moments of relaxation.

Housed in a historic building, this apartment is situated in the Riviere Esterne neighbourhood of Padua. While you'll need to take the stairs up to the home's entrance, it has two small balconies – one overlooking the district’s internal canal and another over the Riviera Paleocapa. If you need to catch up on work, there’s a study area here too, but we bet you’d prefer to explore this cultural city. Known for its frescoes such as those in the Scrovegni Chapel, there’s plenty to see. The iconic Specola is a five-minute walk, while an eight-minute stroll will take you to Piazza Duomo and the centre of this university town is ten minutes on foot. 


A Little Dream of the Valley 

Privacy is key here at this villa in Emilia Romagna, yet guests have access to all the luxurious amenities of the sprawling resort – tennis courts, a spa, restaurants and multi-level swimming pools. You’re in Italy’s larder here (22km from Bologna) and wine and olive oil tastings are on offer. Your hosts have paid great attention to detail to create a home that boasts all the modern conveniences you'd hope to find while employing age-old building techniques to create a traditional-looking property that blends seamlessly with its surroundings. Inside, you'll find tiled floors, exposed beams and vaulted brick ceilings, plus plenty of antiques that lend further credence to the idea that this building could be four or 400 years old.

Beyond the gorgeous interiors, outside is where this home really shines. With over 10,000 sqft of gardens, there's plenty of space for an inviting pool and two covered seating areas, as well as verdant lawns for the kids to play on. The awe-inspiring views over the surrounding landscape are just the icing on the cake. 

If you can tear your eyes away, we'd suggest exploring the charming hilltop villages. You never know when you'll stumble across the best wine or olive oil you've ever tasted. Elsewhere, the historic cities of Cesena and Rimini are approximately twenty kilometres away.

Hanging out on four hectares of vineyards and olive groves, this vine-covered villa has the right idea with ample outdoor seating, a crystal-clear private pool and several options for sun lounging. Though it's a little traditionally styled, there's a certain rustic charm and plenty of space for a family to hunker down. And with some bedrooms in the annexed apartment and studio, privacy is another thing this home has in spades. It's also within the Parco Regionale dei Colli Euganei, which will interest hiking enthusiasts, and Padua, Verona and Venice are all within driving distance. There's a breakfast service here but speak to your host about catering or a private chef.

From here, you’ll have your pick of restaurants and bars, while St Mark's Square and Doge's Palace are a short walk away. Inside, there are two very compact kitchenettes, which are only suitable for preparing light bites. There's also a sofa bed for flexible sleeping options. But, the real standout is the private courtyard, complete with a garden set, perfect for morning coffees. Just keep in mind that this home is spread over multiple floors with no lift, so we recommend it for those who can easily manage stairs.

Ideally located in Venice’s Cannaregio neighbourhood, this traditional and stylish pad is within easy walking distance of the city’s historic landmarks and cultural institutions. You can arrive by boat here, with Fondamente Nuove, just steps away. The interiors are considered, with plenty of space for your cohort – the central dining room is the heart of this apartment and where we imagine you’ll share memorable meals. Keep in mind this is a central location, so noise is to be expected, though the artfully-designed bedrooms make falling asleep feel somewhat luxurious.

Tucked away in Venice's arty district of Dorsoduro, this charming home has a large private garden that kids will love, along with space for alfresco dining and sunbathing. The main bedroom enjoys its own en-suite, and while you won't have views in all the bedrooms here, the location is great. You won't be fully central, but you're never far from the action and you might hear some outside noise during your stay. You'll find a variety of restaurants, bars, and shops close by, as well as Vaporetto stops for easy travel across this iconic city.

Verdant Retreat

This tranquil Venetian haven is spread over four floors in the city's San Marco district. The rooftop terrace offers space to dine alfresco and some lovely views over the rooftops of the surrounding buildings. There are a lot of stairs here, making it unsuitable for children under the age of 6, but babies and older children are welcome. The main living space is on the second floor with multiple Juliet balconies – they're great for letting the outdoors in, but you won't have room to sit out on them. The kitchen is small, but fear not – there's a range of restaurants within walking distance, as well as vaporetto stops close by for exploring.
