Beyond the gorgeous interiors, outside is where this home really shines. With over 10,000 sqft of gardens, there's plenty of space for an inviting pool and two covered seating areas, as well as verdant lawns for the kids to play on. The awe-inspiring views over the surrounding landscape are just the icing on the cake.

However, arguably the jewel in its crown lies outside, in the form of a dazzling hillside infinity pool. And with the town of Gaiole in Chianti close by and the city of Florence around an hour away, local delights go far beyond wine.

In and of itself, this stone and brick villa is rather dreamy. The timber roof trusses and tiled floor bring an easy rustic charm, and the furnishings are unshowy. Large glass doors can be opened on warm afternoons — plenty of those in Tuscany — to let a cooling breeze circulate through the interior. They also look out to a lovely view of the Pratomagno mountains. However, the home is part of a compound with some excellent communal amenities. Pass through the lemon grove, for instance, and you'll come across a large infinity pool with a covered pavilion at the side for alfresco lunches. Elsewhere, there's a well-stocked library and a theatre space where musical and artistic events often take place. Guests can embark upon a stroll in the surrounding private park, where you'll find olive trees, traditional stone walls and waterfalls on the Resco River. You might find there's very little need to leave the address, but the local town of Pian di Scò takes just over twenty minutes to reach on foot if you fancy a change of scenery.

This home is a lesson in history, from the Roman era of lavish bathhouses and marble statues, to the present day. Spa days in the privacy of your home await with an indoor pool that could rival the ancient baths of old Rome and a sauna and Turkish hammam to complete the experience. And the state-of-the-art gym is a reminder that you’re still in the 21st century. On sunny days, pad from the indoor pool to the outdoor pool, lined with loungers. From here, a stairway leads to the rest of the gardens where 15,000 square metres are filled with marble statues, linden trees and vast lawns. You could get lost exploring each manicured area bursting with herbs and flowers. 

Heading inside this 17th-century villa, you’ll find sitting rooms adorned with frescoes, gilded mirrors and arched windows looking out over the vineyards and rolling hills of your locale. There are several lounges to choose from, but our favourite might have to be the art-deco-style room with its 1920s bar for rounds of cocktails and a grand piano to set the soundtrack yourself. There’s no denying that each bedroom and bathroom feels grand, as though designed for Italian nobility with marble finishes and Jacuzzi tubs. But, heading into the kitchen, the scene changes to one of farmhouse rusticana, with all the mod cons of the 21st century to help you cater for the group.

The location is a secluded one, tucked away amidst the agricultural landscape of Emilia Romagna (considered the larder of Italy). The Adriatic Sea is a short drive away should you wish to hit the beach and there are plenty of places to pause for an espresso or stock up on the famous produce of the region in the nearby town of Forli. One thing not to miss is the view from ‘The Balcony of Romagna’ at the medieval borgo of Bertinolo, just a kilometre away.

This incredible eighteenth-century villa in the heart of Tuscany is a wonderful setting for a wedding or just a gathering of your nearest and dearest. The dining room can host the whole group, and several lounges and sitting rooms come adorned with bold modern artworks and chandeliers beneath the wooden ceilings. There are two kitchens to choose from, one in holiday-cheery canary yellow, with an old brick fireplace still ensconced in the wall. 

You’re in the heart of the countryside here, with Arezzo and Siena within day-tripping distance. Those that like a walk will appreciate the hike up to Torre di Galatrona, which starts just beyond the villa’s boundary, or perhaps a day at the winery next door. 

Eighteenth-Century Splendour

This breathtaking villa is one of the oldest in the hamlet of Castelfranco Piandiscò, and it wears its history with pride. The traditional stone exterior gives way to a charmingly traditional living space – you'll be enchanted by the rustic wooden beams, collection of antique furniture and terracotta tiles. The ancient Valdarno fireplace is a beautiful centrepiece, and you'll find a second feature fireplace in the kitchen. The four bedrooms are wonderfully peaceful, and one even has access to the balcony, where you can sip your morning espresso in the fresh air. In, fact, you're spoilt for choice when it comes to outdoor space – from the beautiful garden, full of greenery and flowers, to the smart patio, you can't help but adopt an alfresco lifestyle here. Pick a book or magazine from the extensive home library, and bask in the Italian sunshine before taking a refreshing dip in the infinity pool. Adventurers can explore the stunning scenery surrounding the commune, wandering through olive groves and beech woods in true tranquility. And, if you fancy a day in the city, both Arezzo and Florence are only thirty kilometres away – their world-famous cultural relics have to be seen to be believed.

Talking of olives – there’s an annual Olive Oil Festival around November to enjoy, but any time of year you can explore this pretty village surrounded by vineyards. Pergine Valdarno has a grocery, bakery, butchers shop, and restaurant, while further afield discover the castles and churches this romantic area is famed for.

Locally, it’s a short drive to the centre of Greve, or the village of Panzano is a mere 800 metres away, where restaurants and shops await.

Lounge by the lavender-edged 18-metre lap pool with its beautiful views of the forested hills and distant hilltop village of Castagnoli. You can’t see the pool from the house, as it's 70 metres down a track, past the owner's villa – but once there, it’s a sight to behold. Or relax on your terrace or balcony in the private garden. It’s the perfect spot for an Italian feast cooked on the barbecue or rustle up something in the kitchen on the first floor with its marble worktops. If you need to top up on ingredients, then Gaiole, 4 kilometres away, has a selection of shops, as well as restaurants, while the nearest village, Barbischio, 1 kilometre away, has a superb trattoria. 

The Vines of the Vineyard

Leave the gorgeous Renaissance city of Florence in your rearview mirror and head for the hills. Drive just thirty minutes or so up into the rolling Tuscan hills, and you'll come across this breathtaking villa with a soaring clock tower. Split into three units, two of which are on offer here, make your home from home in the sleepy village of Cellai where time stands still.

Step inside your apartments, and uncover an enchanting mixture of traditional Tuscan and contemporary touches that blend seamlessly together. Terracotta floors, exposed wood beam ceilings and stunning frescoes sit alongside modern additions, including a stylish farmhouse-style kitchen and monolithic fireplace. 

All eight bedrooms blend rustic charm with utmost comfort to create havens of relaxation where you can take a break from socialising and appreciate the peace and quiet of your surroundings. Throughout the spacious interiors, you'll find several seating areas where you can kick back and relax with a podcast. In addition, dining areas can comfortably accommodate the maximum number of each apartment for sociable meals with family and friends in true Italian style. Elsewhere, the bathrooms are fitted with exquisite tiles and gleaming Italian marble that adds a hint of luxury to proceedings.

Discover a lush landscape of immaculate terraced gardens, a vine-covered pergola, a tempting pool and breathtaking views over the surrounding countryside. When your hosts are in town (in the mostly vacant third unit), they've made a ritual of visiting Forno La Chiocciola, where they stock up on fresh schiaccata, a Florentine speciality, and we'd suggest you do the same. Spend your days laid out by the pool, interrupted your sunbathing sessions only for refreshing dips and trips to the kitchen to rip off a chunk of that delicious bread.

For the culture vultures, we'd suggest spending a day (at the very least) wandering the backstreets and alleyways of Florence. In our opinion, getting lost on a self-guided tour is the best way to get to know the artistic, architectural and cultural history of Tuscany.

Set in hectare upon hectare of olive groves and yet just a short drive from the wander-worthy streets of Siena and countless medieval walled towns, the setting of this Tuscan farmhouse apartment is postcard-perfect. A wonderful retreat for two, a single traveller, or a small family, you'll have a private terrace with a barbecue and Jacuzzi (for an additional fee) to soak up the rolling hill vistas, and just across the communal lawns, a shared swimming pool to beat the Tuscan heat. While the traditional interiors might not be everyone's cup of tea, the historic features of this 15th-century estate are impressive.

This villa strikes the perfect balance between contemporary and traditional. The terracotta ceilings and floors are original features, but the kitchen and lounge on each level are totally modern – not to mention convenient for larger groups. But it's the sprawling garden that captured our attention. A private swimming pool is a lovely addition during the summer, a separate outbuilding has table tennis and darts, and several seating areas offer spots to relax with a glass of wine – our favourite being the courtyard, ideal for alfresco dining. The nearest village is San Gusmè, but most shops and eateries are in Castelnuovo Berardenga (6 kilometres away). For day trips, head to Siena – just thirty-five minutes by car.
