What this home may lack in style, it makes up for in location. Nestled in the hills of Moneglia, it commands views across the bay and is well-connected by train to Genoa and the coastal villages of the Cinque Terre. Admire the views from a lounger on the terrace, or head down to the pool, which stays relatively shady and cool thanks to the surrounding trees. The furnishings are a little dated, but at least there are sea views in the upper bedrooms, while the large sliding glass doors mean you're never far away from a sunny seat. Plus, the glass dining table comfortably seats your entire group, so you can also enjoy meals together – that's if you don't wander into Moneglia to try one of the restaurants on the palm-tree-lined streets.

This home caught our eye for its sea views across the Gulf of Tigullio. And even when you’re indoors, you can still enjoy the water vistas from the living area and some of the bedrooms. We love the outdoor space here, which is well set up for lazy days by the pool and alfresco dining. For an authentic Italian evening, light the wood-fired pizza oven and rustle up some dinner which naturally, should be enjoyed outdoors on your terrace where you can soak up the views. Sweeping across the mountains in Castelnuovo Garfagnana towards Lucca in the south, it'll be hard to take your eyes off the rolling scenery. The best spot for gazing? We reckon it's the private pool, though the outlook from the loggia and terrace is just as lovely. It's not the most modern home, but it has a lot of heart – the rooms are cosy, comfortable, and packed with character. The location is convenient for exploring the area, too. Lucca, Barga, Castelnuovo Garfagnana, and many more hidden gems are easily discoverable by car.

Anyone for tennis? Lovers of the game will be thrilled with the large courts here. Prepare some strawberries and cream for your own version of Wimbledon. The star attraction, though, is this grand, secluded home high on a hill with views over the verdant Tuscan valleys. Enjoy breakfast while gazing out over the peaceful hillside or lounge by the pool while taking in the glorious scent of the surrounding pines. Later, relax over a long lunch of antipasto under the shade of the gazebo with its billowing drapes. Then go for a walk on the winding terracotta paths to find your own slice of heaven in the magnificent gardens. 

Inside, the interiors are no less impressive. Select a book from the library and recline on the chaise longue or take afternoon tea in the sunroom overlooking the silvery olives. We could spend much of our time just wandering around this vast home, discovering all the intriguing antiques and objet d'art. There's so much to do here, but if you do want to venture out, you'll be spoilt for choice.

Located in the hills above Forte dei Marmi, this home has a wonderful view of the sea. On a clear day, you can see as far as La Spezia and Livorno, as well as the islands of Tinetto, La Gorgona and Elba. You can enjoy the vistas from the jacuzzi and fenced garden or the bedroom’s balcony. The open-plan living space has a kitchenette and a wood burner (this room also sleeps guests three and four). If you want to leave this cosy place and explore, the sandy beaches, chic boutiques and restaurants of Forte dei Marmi are a short drive away.

In the exclusive Portofino peninsula, this villa is a ten-minute walk from the harbour's designer shops and seafood restaurants. You'll have private access to the sea on a small rocky platform, and the large terrace is shaded by century-old wisteria with space for alfresco dining. Some of the decor is a little dated and won't be to everyone's taste, but all the bedrooms have lovely sea views. Parking is limited, and although the sea is on your doorstep, it's worth noting that the nearest beach is best reached by public transport.
