The vistas are even better from the balcony – it's the perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine and the Florentine skyline. Housed in a beautiful building, this recently renovated, elegant apartment is a lovely place to spend time in with its designer sofa, marble fireplace and gorgeous herringbone patterned wood floors.

If you want to explore what you can see from this home, it's around a thirty-second stroll to Ponte Vecchio, while the Uffizi Gallery is a four-minute walk. It's the same walking distance to Palazzo Pitti, one of Florence's largest architectural monuments. Other attractions nearby include the Strozzi Palace, which is eight minutes on foot. Delivering knockout vistas of the Florentine hills from a private suntrap terrace and set within easy walking distance of the city’s must-sees, it’s no surprise this home caught our eye. By inner-city Florence standards, this apartment set over two floors is palatial. There’s a banquet-worthy dining room and a well-equipped Italian-style kitchen. Though, with countless trattorias just a stroll away, we suspect you’ll be eating out a lot. It’s worth noting, at full occupancy, the last two guests will have to make do with a single bed and pull-out bed in the cosy fourth bedroom. Fine for a short stay or children sharing – but it might not float everyone’s boat.

When we came across this quaint apartment, we did a double-take. While it may be a bit old-school in style, it has lots of charm and comfort for a city stay. Set on the third floor, with a private balcony overlooking the rooftops of Florence and a courtyard that oozes Italian appeal, there's no lack of character here. Located in the historic district, you'll have lots of sights to see within walking distance, too. All in all, for a cosy stay with friends or family, this one ticks a lot of boxes.

In the morning, stroll eight minutes to Giardino della Fortezza to begin your day with a moment of calm. Sip coffee and eat a pastry or two while you plan how you’ll spend your stay. Perhaps you’ll walk first to the Duomo to admire the architecture of the cathedral – it takes fourteen minutes. In the afternoon, after you’ve taken in a museum or a gallery, you might like to hop in a cab to Piazzale Michelangelo. It takes fifteen minutes to get arguably the best view of the city.

Gaze out at the iconic domed cathedral from the comfort of this spectacular city-centre apartment. Set within an eye-catching period building, complete with imposing wooden double doors, along the rather lovely Via dei Servi, which connects the Piazza del Duomo and the Piazza della Santissima Annunziata. 

This narrow street is lined with a wide array of shops, charming cafes, and traditional restaurants, which should be your first port of call when you get the urge to head out and explore the city. For a closer look at the duomo, you need only walk a couple of minutes to the bustling piazza that surrounds it. Wandering a little over 100m in the opposite direction will lead to the fascinating Leonardo da Vinci Museum, which is filled with life-sized machines based on his many sketches. 

For more Renaissance creations, the iconic Uffizi Gallery lies around 700m to the south – well within walking distance. We'd recommend a leisurely riverside stroll along the River Arno afterwards, or if you're feeling active, head out on a stand-up paddleboarding expedition downriver.

Inside, the apartment is all clean lines and contemporary design, the exposed wood of the soaring ceilings and large wood-framed windows are the main clues to the building's extensive history. An open kitchen and living area combines Scandinavian style with Italian flair to create a stylish space with a real soul.

In Italian construction, the 'piano nobile' refers to the storey of a building — typically the first — on which the nobility would reside, therefore being designed to get the most favourable living conditions. This apartment in a fifteenth-century building is a prime example of how this looks in practice. High ceilings and large windows (through some of which the Duomo can be spotted) make the interior feel bright and inviting, while being positioned above street level means that it's a little more peaceful than elsewhere in the building. While there are some period features — the fresco ceilings and the imposing oak front door — the apartment has been modernised in the ensuing six hundred years or so. The parquet flooring, marble bathrooms and mid-century style furniture in deep blues and greens are today's emblems of fine taste. When you're ready to go exploring, you don't have far to go — Basilica di San Lorenzo and Riccardi Medici Palace are just across the street, while the Duomo is only five minutes' walk away.

Sixth Sense

Delivering knockout vistas of Florence's rooftops and the mighty Duomo from nearly every room, we've fallen hard for this central bolthole. Each light-filled bedroom is as elegant as the next, though they are short on floor and storage space, so we recommend packing lightly. It's also worth noting at full occupancy, it could be a squeeze to all kick back on the sofa, and while the kitchen is well-equipped, it's short on prepping space. It's the perfect excuse to eat out instead, and luckily, you're an olive stone's throw from countless traditional trattorias for all the Tuscan classics.

See the city’s love of art in renaissance galleries and museums within walking distance, and don’t miss the touristy bits like the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and Piazzale Michelangelo – more of a walk, but worth the views. The home, on the sixth floor with a working elevator – rare in Florence – might not be revolutionary, and the kitchen is small, but it is comfortable, and the view of the river and Duomo is a nice touch.

Footsteps from the train station, this apartment sits between the red-roofed buildings and ancient churches of Florence’s centre. It’s styled for the perfect escape to a historic and culture-filled city with darkwood, wrought iron and chandeliers grabbing your attention. We adore the ceiling motif – layers of old parchments and book pages with a clutter of bric-a-brac, as though somebody raided one of the city’s museum store room and fixed the contents to the old wood beams. Then there are the 16th-century frescoes that have been restored, and the kitchen made from old medieval doors. A second kitchen downstairs is all sleek modernity, but the upstairs bedrooms embrace the old world with velvet and hand-painted headboards. 

All of Florence is on your doorstep here, with Piazza della Signoria two steps away and the ancient streets leading to the central Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in ten minutes on foot.

Just outside Florence's historic centre – reachable in thirty minutes or so on foot – this sprawling apartment makes a fantastic home-from-home. It’s worth noting you can hear street noise from one of the bedrooms, but we think the location more than makes up for it. From here, it’s just a short stroll to iconic sights like the beautiful Basilica of Santa Croce, the Market of Sant'Ambrogio and the Duomo.

It also has a set of French windows that light up the entire place (it’s all a single room, with the exception of the bathroom). There are a couple of sister flats in the same building, still managed by Valerio, so while the flat itself can’t really accommodate more than two people, larger groups could book more than one place at a time.

The Green Dome 

Looking for a Florence bolthole that's as unique as it is central? This Santa Croce district apartment, set in a fresco-adorned palazzo and within walking distance of all the must-see sights, is spot-on. With ceilings soaring nearly six metres high in the open-plan living and bedroom space, and a mezzanine level providing access to an additional single bedroom and bathroom, the layout is a tad quirky. But we think this only adds to the charm. It’s worth noting that the kitchen is on the small side and better suited to lighter meals and breakfast. But with so many traditional Florentine restaurants just around the corner in the Santa Croce Piazza, we suspect you’ll be eating out alot.
