A sixteenth-century villa in the hilly outskirts of Florence that, at times, has been both a stables and a nightclub, Thermae is one of the most spectacular places we’ve seen in Italy. Its restoration has been a labour of love for the host, Giovanni, and the way that he’s incorporated technology into the original structure is simply impressive. There’s too much to describe here, but know that everything's been taken care of. And if we did have to choose one thing that stood out, it might have to be the pool, hidden away in the vaults, and only accessible through a trapdoor.

​​Restored by an Italian architect with a gentle touch, this villa has been updated and split into more modern apartments, but without ever compromising on the original charm. By honouring the villa's history – and thereby retaining its character – the home feels traditionally Tuscan with its terracotta tiles and wooden beams. Walk barefoot across the floors to savour the coolness of those tiles on hot days, or light a fire in the wood-burning stove and stare up at the beams, imagining what life would’ve been like here. We suggest a car for ease –  there are restaurants less than 2km away and the pretty town of Montecatini is 15km from the home.

This elegant home in Tuscany is in a dreamy spot in a valley, in a countryside setting that leads to absolute relaxation. The villa is full of character, with antique furniture and wooden beams, in addition to mesmerising views. 

The outside space is lush and pretty. Roses and lavender have been planted alongside a wealth of trees, making the garden feel like an oasis. In the morning, sip coffee at the table under the gazebo, admiring the views and planning your day. If you’re anything like us, you won’t be able to resist a dip in the hedge-lined swimming pool for long. In the evening, set up outside at the long dining table. You might like to arrange for a local chef to come and cook for you – that way you can enjoy a cocktail hour on the terrace before dining as the sun sets beyond the valley.

Nestled in a sea of pea-green pastures, historic olive groves, and undulating hills, this home exudes Tuscan tranquillity. You'll find it in the little village of Brenna, just a forty-minute drive from Siena. Sitting on the first floor of an old honey-hued building, it impressed us with its exquisite interiors and awe-inspiring views. 

The interior combines rustic charm with contemporary comforts and, in true Tuscan style, is cloaked in a calming veil of warm earthy tones and natural textures. Step inside and discover a light-filled canvas of exposed brick walls, terracotta-tiled floors and lofty ceilings adorned with striking timber beams. We love the open-plan living area, a free-flowing space primed for relaxation with ample seating, a delightfully-equipped country kitchen and a majestic stone fireplace. Down the hall, three sumptuous sleeping quarters promise restful slumbers and, through timber-framed windows, postcard-worthy views of your glorious surroundings.

Outside, the peaceful shared courtyard, furnished with dining furniture and a hot tub, beckons you to unwind in the sun. Enjoy an alfresco breakfast here before a day of adventure. Take a stroll through the town, enjoy a morning swim in the Merse River, or hike through the wooded Alto Merse Nature Reserve, just twenty minutes away on foot.

Once owned by winemaker Marchesi Torrigiani, this beautiful hillside villa still features the vineyards that were once, and will likely always be, the heart of this farmland. A beautiful sight, it’s only marginally rivalled by the view of the Chianti Hills which is sprawled out right before you from the elevated position of this home. When you walk the grounds in search of new angles to photograph, you might stumble upon a wood-burning oven and picnic style-benches. Get the family together and venture down to barbecue lunch and dine alfresco in the shade of the towering trees. 

With another home on the property, you’ll likely make new friends around the communal pool when you’re spending lazy days in the sunlounger. Catch up on a novel, drink in hand, as the aroma of olives from the nearby tree drifts to you on the breeze.

Away from the home, you can find the mediaeval village of San Donato only minutes away. Walk the winding streets, marvel at the architecture, and sit down at one of the local restaurants for a beautiful lunch before returning home for an afternoon nap, followed by a glass of chianti wine out on the terrace.

Tucked away in the vineyards and olive groves of Chianti, stands this old brick farmhouse. This apartment is located on the ground floor, with private access to a hideaway garden. Just you and the Cypress trees. Ancient brick takes over the walls of this home, wooden beams line the slanted ceilings, and terracotta stone sweeps over the floors. This little haven is how Tuscan living should be – rustic, traditional, and stripped back, with gorgeous views, wine, and olives to keep you entertained no end.

Waking up here is a little slice of heaven. Enjoy a coffee on the large terrace which overlooks the rolling Chianti hills. Tuscany Wine and Bike offer exactly this – they're based in the heart of Montespertoli, so you can reach them easily. Round off the day with a hearty meal in the village centre, or head back to grill something delicious on the outdoor barbecue. Enjoy your new favourite local wine and watch the golden sun dip behind the hills.

Oliva Farmhouse

Head into the Tuscan hills just outside the charming village of Cellai and keep an eye out for an imposing villa with its own bell tower. Almost unbelievably, this stunning property will be your home from home for however long you decide to stay.

Step inside your apartment, and you'll discover a typically Tuscan scene, with tiled terracotta floors, exposed wooden ceilings and frescoes painted directly on the walls. Why not get to know the artistic, architectural and cultural history of Tuscany, spending an afternoon or three wandering its streets and taking it all in. 


The Legendary Giulia

It may be less than a thirty-minute drive from the spectacular Renaissance city of Florence, but this home feels like another world. Located up in the hills, you'll discover a spectacular villa – complete with a clock tower – just outside the small village of Cellai, where time seems to stand still. 

Pad across terracotta-tiled floors, with wood beam ceilings above, and discover rooms filled with character and charm, where period features and modern touches sit effortlessly alongside one another. Nowhere is this better displayed than in the contemporary kitchen and adjoining dining room with its antique stove. Each of the four bedrooms blends rustic charm with supreme comfort, while the bathrooms are fitted out with beautiful tiles and gleaming marble for a touch of luxury.

Step outside and you'll discover a lush landscape of terraced gardens, an inviting pool and breathtaking views over the Tuscan terrain. There are plenty of traditional touches, from the exposed brick and wooden ceiling beams, to the distressed wood dining table. Pick up some local ingredients, and practice your Italian-style cooking in the kitchen – it's a homely space where you can whip up the perfect risotto. Although petite, Suvereto is packed with cultural delights. Wander through the labyrinth of passageways dating back to the medieval era, and stop off in the family-run restaurants for delicious pasta and pizza. Don't miss the Aldobrandesca Fortress and the beautiful Romanesque church, both just a few minutes away from your front door. A twenty-minute drive will bring you to the Etruscan Coast, with its hidden coves and pinewood forests – so, whether you want to lie on a beach or take an invigorating hike through the woods, you'll be very happy here.

Set on a farm in Tuscany, this house blends rustic charms with a wealth of unforgettable experiences. Designed in classic Tuscan style, the stone walls house wooden beamed ceilings and terracotta floors. The house is one of six rooms and casitas, and guests have access to a vast, crystalline pool that overlooks the rolling hills and vineyards. The farm produces its own Tuscan olive oil and honey, and there is even a top rated restaurant where you can sample some of the farm’s produce. Days can be spent riding the horses from the stable, exploring the area by E-bike, or taking a cookery class at the restaurant, where you might learn how to make fresh pasta or cantuccini. On more relaxed afternoons, treat yourself to a spa or beauty treatment – there is nothing more serene than a massage in the garden, with a gentle breeze and a soundtrack of cicadas.

Nestled amongst the Tuscan hills, this generous villa is split across two buildings and is well-equipped for large groups or families. The rustic interiors won’t be everyone’s cup of tea but the private swimming pool and manicured garden guarantee a relaxing stay. If you find yourself in the mood for socialising, the large outdoor dining area is the perfect place for an alfresco dinner. The location is fairly remote and well suited to those who are keen to explore the countryside and vineyards, but if you are looking for a day trip, Lucca isn’t too far away.

Tuscan Memories

It’s all about the good life at this Italian villa. We’re not just talking la dolce vita, but the full, sustainable package. It’s on an enchanting eco lavender farm, so the fields around you are fragrant as perfume and the villa has its own orto (vegetable garden) which you’re welcome to harvest. Perhaps cook fresh-veg-topped pizzas in the antique pizza oven outdoors, and enjoy at one of two terraces, overlooking the rolling countryside. For days at home, there’s a sparkling swimming pool to cool off in, a petanque court and ping pong too. 

We’re impressed by this villa’s eco-credentials, supplied by renewable energy and with natural aromatherapy oils on offer from the lavender farm. Inside, it’s a calming medley of Japanese zen and Scandi-chic touches. The living room is set around a big fireplace and raw-wood tables and wicker lampshades are a nod to your natural surroundings. The kitchen could be the envy of any professional chef, with a huge, range-style cooker perfect for the fresh produce on your doorstep.

Getting out and exploring, you’ve got Italian countryside all around you and the village of Marsiliana is less than ten minutes drive away for supermarkets and pizzerias. Twenty minutes away you are spoiled for choice – from the charming medieval villages of Capalbio and Pitigliano to the glamorous beaches, bars and restaurants of the Silver Coast.

The Lavender Harvest

This apartment shares its location with a family-run farm in pretty Montespertoli. The family produces wine and olive oil from a picturesque spot amid the gentle Chianti hills, surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and woods – it’s delightfully rustic. 

The apartment sits within these grounds, benefitting from the large garden and beautiful views. It has its own private garden too, just off the bedroom – the perfect romantic setting for a glass of wine and some stargazing. Traditional features like stone walls and a terracotta floor add to the romance of the apartment, as does the four-poster bed. 

When you’re not exploring the surrounding woodland and countryside on foot, you might like to venture further afield to take in more of wonderful Tuscany. The medieval town of San Gimignano is forty-one minutes away by car, and it takes forty-seven minutes to get to Siena. Wander through these historic towns with a gelato, taking in the architecture and shopping for keepsakes. When you return to the apartment, enjoy an alfresco dinner while admiring the view – it's the ideal way to round off your day.
