Everything fits together, from the parquet floor to the various lamps, and even the terrace is taken care of, and not an afterthought. Finding a street close to it all but not inundated with tourists is the holy grail in Rome – and that's precisely where you'll find this apartment. We call it the Goldilocks zone. But, ever the professional, your host Michele hasn’t used that as an excuse to rest on his laurels. The flat itself is in perfect condition, and while it doesn’t have the feeling of a family home, that’s often a good thing when it's not a sprawling home with space for all the host's personal items. The two bedrooms are on opposite sides of the flat, which is perfect for groups of friends travelling together, though families might want little ones closer by, or not. We understand. Sandwiched between the river and lively Campo de' Fiori, you're in a prime location to explore the city. The square is home to the city's most vibrant (and occasionally overpriced) street market (Monday-Saturday mornings). Still, this famous foodie haven is a good place to stock up on fresh produce, just a five-minute walk from your apartment. Cross over the stone footbridge, Ponte Sisto, and within a couple of minutes, you'll be immersed in trendy Trastevere. With its cobbled streets lined with charmingly faded facades, innovative trattorias, and craft cocktail bars, there's plenty to keep you occupied well into the night.

Perched along a quiet, ancient street in the atmospheric Navona district, and with all of the city’s must-see sights reachable on foot, the location of this immaculately presented apartment is hard to beat. Get off to a flying start just around the corner at Piazza Navona (three minutes on foot) –⁠ one of the city’s most famous squares and 'the spot' for an evening aperitivo. And when thoughts turn to food, you’re spoilt for choice here –⁠ with bustling coffee bars, authentic trattorias, and high-end restaurants all just a short jaunt from your door. Back at home, this apartment makes quite a first impression with its grand, period exterior and a spiraling internal staircase leading to your door. The décor pairs contemporary furnishings alongside period features, including exposed original brickwork and timber-clad ceilings of high and mighty proportions. And despite its prime central location, our guests love how quiet this home feels –⁠ particularly in the bedrooms, which overlook a peaceful internal courtyard. Thanks to the attention given to every corner of this luxury apartment, it really feels like a home. The owners take care of it personally, and it's easy to feel the emotion they put into the space. Sit on one of two balconies with a glass of Italian wine or enjoy a family meal in the light-filled living space (your host provides a welcome hamper or let them arrange a private chef for you). Each room has its own private bathroom, so it's perfect for a family or a big group of friends. A rarity In Rome, this place also has a parking space. There are even some glimpses of the Vatican City from this abode, or it's a ten-minute ride to this treasure trove of iconic art and architecture. It's a twenty-minute drive to the stunning Trevi Fountain or the Baldo Degli Ubaldi metro station is just a minute away on foot, if you want to explore further. For some peaceful green space, on the other hand – head to Parco di Villa Carpegna with its shady benches and fountains, a mere ten-minute stroll away.

It's about a twenty-minute walk to the Pantheon, and though other landmarks like the Trevi Fountain and the Colosseum are around a half-an-hour away, this excellent location is well worth it. Spend afternoons roaming the pretty-as-a-postcard alleyways and people-watching in the piazzas, then grab an alfresco aperitif in the evenings at one of the world-class trattorias. After a busy day, come home to this snug apartment and relax in style. It has plenty of details that set it apart from the crowd, from the bold wallpaper to the ceramic leopard that greets you as you enter. The wooden beams and large windows hark back to Trastevere's history, and though it may be small, it feels like a cosy home-from-home, perfect for a couple wanting a romantic getaway in the heart of Rome.

Best of all, you’ll be in Trastevere, one of the oldest and most authentic Roman districts. From here, you can easily stroll to the Vatican museums and iconic sights including Piazza Navona and the Trevi Fountain.

Deep within the narrow, medieval streets of Rome, this period building hides a surprisingly modern apartment for up to five guests. It's not a huge space but it's been cleverly configured to make the most of what it has – and to make it feel comfortable and high-end at the same time. Decorated in on-trend whites, creams and greys, it's bright and fresh. The kitchenette is stowed away in a cupboard-like space in the living room and while it's perfect for the basics, it's not going to appeal to keen home cooks – but this is Rome, and some of the best restaurants, cafes and bars in the world are right on your doorstep. Our favourite feature of this home is the view onto the charming Piazza dei Satiri outside. And while we're talking location, the famous Campo de’ Fiori market is just around the corner.


Pan's Place

Tucked down a quiet vicolo in Trastevere, this home positions you away from the crowds and yet just a short walk from Rome's top historical attractions, including the Pantheon and Trevi Fountain. Note that you'll need to climb stairs to reach the entrance of this home. However, there's plenty of space to relax, and a sofa bed to accommodate groups of up to four guests. You'll also find a table if you need to work from home. The kitchen lacks an oven, but that said, the area is renowned for its culinary delights, so we reckon you'll be out sampling the local eateries most evenings.

Finding somewhere that can comfortably sleep eight (and ten, at a stretch) in the Jewish Quarter isn’t as straightforward as you might think. Finding somewhere that can comfortably sleep eight and has a view as good as Teatro’s is even harder. It looks down onto the Largo di Torre Argentina, which holds the ruins of four temples and Pompey’s Theatre. It’s a fantastic spot, and Teatro makes the most of it, with a simple design intended to not interfere.

You'll be impressed with the views of the Santa Barbara dei Librari seen from the windows of this newly renovated apartment. But you'll love this home's location even more. Set in the heart of the historic district, overlooking the atmospheric square Largo dei library, all the must-see sights are walkable from here.

Get off to a flying start with a hefty dose of Roman life around the corner at Campo de Fiori (a three-minute walk) –⁠ by day, the piazza hosts one of the city's best-known markets, and by night, its bars and restaurants keep the night flowing. Or do like the locals with early-evening passeggiatas along the postcard-pretty River Tiber, it's just a four-minute walk from your door.

Back at home, this modern apartment housed in an ancient Roman villa of mighty proportions makes quite the first impression with its floor-to-ceiling windows flooding the space with natural daylight and revealing charming scenes of the pretty piazza below.

The designers have cleverly used the height of those lofty, exposed beam ceilings to create a nifty mezzanine level that houses the second bedroom. Meanwhile, strategically-placed house plants and contemporary artwork warm the loft-style space. When thoughts turn to food, you can easily rustle up a  bite to eat in the smart kitchen area. Though with so many trattorias waiting right outside your door, we wouldn't blame you if you ate out every day instead.

The Duchess is a comfortable place with lots going for it, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t start with that view. A city like Rome is full of views, but even so, this one is special, and the terrace itself is beautiful, with the furniture, the awning and the flowers all around (in summer, at least). This, along with the various antiques inside, makes you feel as if you’re in a Rome that existed 200 years ago, one that’s since been lost.

Despite a small footprint, Saguaro makes great use of the space it has. The mezzanine creates a feeling of openness while the colours brighten the place. We also really liked Iacopo, who we found really patient and helpful (even for a Plum host). The area is an interesting one, and depending on your point of view, could be considered a downside, as it’s a bit out of many of the main tourist hotspots. It is, however, an opportunity to experience Rome as a Roman would, free from the crowds and vendors.


Saguaro

This home has a fantastic location in upscale Prati – it's just over a ten-minute walk to the Vatican Museums, while the high-end boutiques in Via Cola di Rienzo are a twenty-minute stroll away. You'll also find an array of bars and gourmet restaurants on your doorstep. Trionfale Market, on the other hand, with its food and flower stalls, is just over a five-minute saunter. So, take some fresh produce back to this home and whip up a Roman-style feast to enjoy in the elegant dining area. Later, entertain your guests at the piano here, or relax with a glass of prosecco. In the morning, fling open the French doors in the bedroom, then enjoy a hearty breakfast before starting another exciting day exploring all the Eternal City's wonderful sights.

Crescendo

A quirky base in Rome, this home is the attic of a building, so sits amid Rome’s rooftops. This means there are a lot of stairs to climb – it’s not going to be suitable for everyone and isn’t recommended for children under the age of six. But if you can manage the stairs, you’re rewarded with a charming home-from-home. The apartment even boasts a private terrace – the perfect spot for alfresco dining – and is next to a chapel designed by Raphael in the 1500s. You’ll share your outside space with the original bell tower. Seeing more of Rome’s architecture and history is a breeze, as you’re within walking distance of all the main attractions, including Campo de’ Fiori – just a five-minute stroll.

While this two-bedroom Rome apartment isn't the most stylish in our collection, its enviable location is what makes it stand out. If you're here to explore, you'll find plenty of galleries and museums nearby. Back at home, one bedroom offers courtyard views, while the other lets you peer through trees at the River Tiber. The kitchen, while looking in need of an update, is well-equipped – though we think you'll be taking advantage of stylish Regola's eateries more often than not.

Using high-end materials and furnishings, the apartment has an elegant living room and a large Arclinea kitchen. And if you need to work while away, there’s a desk in one of the bedrooms. Your hosts here have ensured you'll have everything you need for a comfortable and enjoyable stay.

Carrara Marble & Velvet

With its location just moments from the Spanish Steps, this apartment is hard to beat. It can't get more central than this – you'll be within walking distance of the Trevi Fountain, Villa Borghese, and countless eateries. After a long day on your feet, you'll appreciate the indoor Jacuzzi waiting for you back home. The overall design is contemporary and chic, featuring open-concept bathrooms that ooze luxury (though privacy is, of course, limited). Travelling as a group of six? Upon request, two guests can kip on single beds in the living area, but we think this home is best for four.

Spagna Relaxation

Full of colour, this penthouse is a stylish base for a Roman holiday. It’s in the lively district of Trastevere, a bohemian part of Rome known for its wealth of trattorias, bars, and artisan shops. Sights including the Roman Forum and the Colosseum are just across the river, a cab ride away. The modern apartment has all the amenities you’ll need for a city break, including a convenient kitchen and a workspace. Best of all, you’ll have a terrace to unwind on. It’s worth noting that the bed in bedroom two is raised and only accessible via a ladder – it won’t be suitable for everyone.  

The Colour of Rome

There isn’t much that’s more Italian than a Vespa, and Farobasso has two of them. These are the most eye-catching vintage objects in the apartment, but there are many more - the host has tied the theme together nicely. The entire place has been recently redone, and you can tell from the excellent condition it’s in - the bathrooms in particular feel spotless. However, Farobasso is a way out of the historic centre. It might be well-placed to visit the Vatican, but to get to the Trevi fountain, or the Colosseum, you might be tempted to commandeer one of the scooters.

The palazzo that houses this apartment is something to behold. It's a wonderfully historic building that backs onto a little square and housed renowned American expressionist painter Cy Twombly for a good part of his later life. Once inside, the apartment is simple and traditional but elegant. There are plenty of eye-catching original features on display, including the stunning exposed beam ceiling and open fireplace, It lacks the personal effects of a lived-in home, which will appeal to those who tend to find Roman apartments on the busy side, but your hosts made your comfort their number one priority – the beds (and linens in particular) feel very luxurious and make getting up in the morning that little bit trickier. Explore the labyrinth of streets and you'll find yourself a few minutes' walk from the River Tiber, a five-minute stroll from Piazza Campo de' Fiori and 550 metres from the stunning Piazza Navona.

Pencil Graffiti

With heaps of Italian soul and rustic charm, this quiet, well-kept and beautifully appointed apartment offers everything needed for that dolce vita. For the location, you're surrounded by local authenticity and just a seven-minute walk to the emblematic Colosseum. Find an assortment of eateries, wine bars and classy cafés to enjoy an alfresco lunch in the sun, before working off any over-indulgences with a gentle fourteen-minute stroll to Trevi Fountain – pennies at the ready. We also have to mention the apartment being on the cusp of Monti and Campitelli – both are full of beautiful piazzas, windy backstreets and family-run trattorias. Back home, we think there's somewhat of a contemporary Scandi feel, with plain bedspreads, pared-back furnishings and white shelved walls. Modern and minimalist, you'll also notice the elegant marble floors, quirky wallpaper prints and low-hanging light bulbs that we really loved.

Situated in Monteverde, this apartment boasts a charming rooftop terrace with plenty of space for you to relax and enjoy alfresco meals. From here, it's a short walk or bus ride to the quirky Trastevere district, with a great selection of pubs, eateries and shops, plus a well-connected Metro station. The home itself is perfectly practical for two or three guests – though the third person will be sleeping on a sofa bed. It's also worth noting that this home is located on the third floor without a lift, so we recommend it for those who can easily manage stairs. 

Roman Sky

A former 17th-century trading station, this characterful building now houses cosy apartments that hark back to the neighbourhood's heritage. With original timber ceilings, shuttered windows overlooking the city streets and hexagonal tiled floors, this flat radiates Roman ambience. But rainfall showers, a sleek kitchen and sumptuous sofas provide plenty of 21st-century comforts. Rustle up antipasti and share it around the roomy dining table alongside a bottle of Italy's finest wine – or, if you're not up for cooking, arrange for a private chef to prepare a delicious feast for you. There's a desk in the living area that's perfect for business travellers, while the comfortable bedrooms are just the ticket after a long day exploring Rome's lively streets.

And speaking of exploring, you couldn't ask for a better spot to do just that. Smack dab in the city centre, you're a mere two-minute walk from the traditional markets in Campo de' Fiori and the bustling Piazza Navona. Alongside dozens of restaurants, museums, historical landmarks and boutiques, you're only a sixteen-minute stroll from the Trevi Fountain – after a guided tour around the city, end the evening with a nightcap at one of the trendy cocktails bars nearby.

Located in a quieter area of the city and providing plenty of outside space to unwind, this apartment guarantees a restful stay in Rome. Taking in the sunshine couldn't be easier here, with multiple balconies and a large garden to enjoy. Sit down for an alfresco lunch on the covered dining terrace when you're not out sampling the local eateries nearby. Surrounded by shops and casual restaurants, while being just minutes away from St. Peter's Square via public transport, this apartment is well-placed and stress-free. 

Floral Wisteria

Habitat has a lot going for it. Beyond the incredible location (Via di Monserrato is considered one of the most beautiful streets in the city), it’s in good condition, has high ceilings, excellent parquet floors, and whitewashed ceiling beams. The kitchen brings the average down a little – you wouldn’t want to plan on cooking a dinner party in there – but apart from that, it’s a very comfortable, practical flat.


Habitat

It’s a journey to get to Ocean Eyes, but we promise it’s worth it. Tucked away on the fourth floor of a beautiful Navona building, it comes with an airy terrace, perfect for relaxing with a glass of wine. The immediate street is filled with antique shops – and you’re only a stone’s throw away from the beautiful Piazza Navona. The place itself is quite small (especially if four guests stay here), but we’re willing to look past that as it’s just so charming.

Ocean Eyes

This modern apartment boasts an excellent location in Rome – it’s just a two-minute walk from the Spanish Steps. You’ll be a short walk from many of the Eternal City’s main attractions, including Piazza del Popolo and Villa Borghese. There are also excellent shopping, dining out, and transport options practically on your doorstep. The apartment is contemporary and functional, with high ceilings and a convenient kitchen. At full occupancy, privacy is somewhat limited – two guests will sleep on a sofa bed on the open mezzanine above one of the bedrooms. 

Seconds from the Steps

You’ll have trattorias, craft beer pubs, and independent shops on your doorstep at this apartment in the bohemian neighbourhood of Trastervere. And discovering the rest of the city will be a breeze, with many of Rome’s must-sees within walking distance. The layout of this home won’t suit everyone – the bed is on a mezzanine level, accessed via a ladder, and there’s not much space for preparing meals in the narrow kitchen. We think it’s best for a couple or solo traveller wanting to drop their bags and head out to explore.

The Roman Cardinal

At this Prati penthouse, exploring Rome is a breeze. The Vatican Museums are 700 metres away, St. Peter's Basilica is a fifteen-minute stroll, and the nearest metro station is five minutes on foot. You'll find plenty of wine bars and trendy eateries nearby, too. Back home, the contemporary living area has a double sofa bed for two. A well-appointed kitchen is ideal for rustling up breakfast before heading out. Though the second bedroom and both showers are a little snug, we think the location more than makes up for it.

Prati Delight

Tucked into the heart of Trastevere, this home is perfectly located for exploring the city, with trattorias and shops on your doorstep and Gianicolo Hill, the Botanical Gardens and the Vatican all within walking distance. Sure, the traditional style of this apartment, laid out over three floors, may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but you’ll find everything needed for a comfortable stay. And the cherry on top? It has to be the private terrace. Just the spot for sipping limoncello as you gaze out across the Eternal City after a busy day. 

In the Heart of Rome

A seamless blend of traditional charm and contemporary flair, this apartment is quite a gem. The high-quality finishes are straight out of a magazine, while those searching for character will appreciate the wooden ceilings dating back to the 1400s. Two single sofa beds offer sleeping space for little ones in the lounge, though we think this pad is best for a couple. As for the location, you'll be based in Trastevere. Known for its bohemian atmosphere, local trattorias, and artisan shops, this neighbourhood is the perfect stomping grounds for those seeking an authentic stay. A Modern Mosaic

This retro-chic apartment of offers a slightly different experience from many of our other homes in Rome. Rather than the bustle of the tourist centre, you’ll be in the leafy, twentieth-century streets of Monteverde Vecchio where traditional pasta restaurants and pubs serving artisan beer sit alongside weekly markets and antique shops. 
 
It’s a fitting locale for this historic apartment, as the host’s family have lived here since 1927, and some of the elegant furnishings, portraits, and other artworks decking the apartment’s walls go back further still. We love the antique camera that creates a memorable welcome, as well as the blue kitchen that provides the main sociable hub here. Gather together for breakfasts of fresh coffee and locally bought pastries at the table, or better yet, step put onto the private terrace for a sunny start to the day. This is also the ideal spot to treat yourself to a glass of Italian red before sampling the local trattorias, while the bedrooms wait to drift you off into a peaceful night’s sleep after a busy day of fun and sightseeing. 
 
Speaking of exploring, head to the  Porta Portese market in Trastevere on Sundays to experience Rome’s oldest flea market (a twenty-five-minute walk) and enjoy a stroll along the Tiber River, eighteen minutes away on foot. You’re also a thirteen-minute walk from Villa Sciarra, while the famous Mouth of Truth is forty minutes on foot from your door.

Milliner has a history as a family home – Olimpia actually grew up here – and as such it’s got a bit of soul to it. It’s been designed to last, and many of the pieces of furniture have a sense of intransigence to them, from the tree boughs to the wicker and the collection of books. The space is slightly lopsided, as most of it feels quite large, but the second bedroom is definitely undersized, but this is really just a quibble. It’s a welcoming, genuine place.

Halfway between Trastevere and Campo de’ Fiori, and footsteps from the banks of the River Tiber, this apartment is enviably located. Inside, the place has been tastefully finished with relaxation in mind. Furnishings in rich brown are complemented by pops of teal and subtle gold accents. There’s a comfy L-shaped sofa that calls for reclining with a good book and a dining nook should you fancy taking your meals at home. Take a walk through Rome’s historic streets. You’ll reach the Spada Gallery and the old-school trattorias of Via del Pellegrino in five minutes by foot, the Moor Fountain in ten and the Pantheon in fifteen. To reach the Roman Forum and the Colosseum, catch a taxi and arrive in just over ten minutes or opt to wander through the city and reach them in a leisurely thirty.
