The villa has been restored from an elegant country house, so it retains lots of lovely Tuscan charm ¬– think heavy wood beams, terracotta accents and a classic stone facade. The layout is quirky, with two loft spaces housing the bedrooms – the plus side to all the stairs is that the views are incredible. 

The countryside that surrounds this home is lush and green, with plenty of nearby routes for hikers to get stuck into. It’s also very close to Chianti country, so you might like to seek out a vineyard tour, or at the very least pick up a bottle to enjoy on the terrace one evening. 

In terms of day trips, you can’t do better than driving thirty-five minutes to Siena. It’s a glorious city to explore, with its rich history and a wealth of fantastic restaurants. After a day out, head back to the villa for a dip in the pool in the early evening – it’s a splendid spot for a sunset swim.

That said, we think people will naturally gravitate to the pool area, or gather at the table for a spot of alfresco dining. Location-wise, there are beaches, historical towns, and renowned wineries all within easy reach – you’ll never be lost for things to do.

The Italian countryside has a magnetic charm. Could it be the holy trinity of wine, food and verdant views? Definitely. Or the temperate Mediterranean climate? Certainly. But it’s also because it’s where you’ll find glorious holiday homes like this one. 

Set in the hills of San Casciano dei Bagni and Chiusi, this magnificent stone farmhouse straddles the border between two fairytale regions – Tuscany and Umbria. Explore both of their charming towns, cultures, and cuisines with ease from this central base. We recommend the neighbouring hillside towns of Cetona and San Casciano dei Bagni, but if you’d like to venture a bit further afield, the nearby railway station in Chiusi allows for breezy day trips to Cortona, Siena and Montepulciano. 

But for all that, you'll have more than enough to keep you busy with all this home has to offer. The well-selected modern furniture and fixtures blend beautifully with the terracotta floors, brick-vaulted ceilings, stone arches and fireplaces. The classical rustic interior transports you to the past, especially with the countryside views from nearly every room. 

And there’s a lot to see – sitting proudly on a five-hectare estate, the home looks out onto both cultivated land and woodland, a lush garden of flowers and cypress trees. Outside, the rolling landscape is best enjoyed by the shimmering stone pool or the romantic, shaded pergola. In the heat of the afternoon, read in the cool of the study before returning to the patio. Lounge until sunset, where the fiery colours linger longer, and are best enjoyed alongside a bold Tuscan red from the cellar.

With its unfettered Tyrrhenian Sea views, manicured gardens and close proximity to the seaside, this homespun villa is a place for slowing down and switching off. With direct access to Padulella Beach, this villa guarantees a memorable stay on the island of Elba. Outdoor living is encouraged here, thanks to the summer kitchen complete with a wood oven, infinity pool and a covered terrace overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. There’s a rustic approach to the interiors, which we find charming, and we love the sunken Jacuzzi in the main bedroom. Hiring a car is recommended if you fancy exploring the island – let your first stop be Portoferraio, a six-minute drive away.

Standing high and proud above sea level, this turreted fortress gazes down at the stunning, surrounding countryside. Planted neatly between the delights of Tuscany and Umbria and with Lake Trasimeno in the foreground, a medieval trail of monuments, spas, and villages await to be explored. The villa itself is like an ancient towerhouse, rising up between the trees. The 360-degree view from its highest point overlooks the vast grounds, so you can survey the lands like a king or queen. Kids can play Rapunzel in the tower, or run around on the lawn and splash in the pool. With so many sheltered seating spots, from terraces to balconies, there’s plenty of spots to escape with a good book and bask in the peace and quiet. You’re 300 metres from the sea at this charming apartment in Marina di Grosseto. The neo-classic streets of this coastal town are filled with seafood restaurants, pizzerias and waterfront bars, all within walking distance from the apartment, as well as the lounger-lined soft sand of the beach. Just behind the apartment, there’s a pine forest for shaded walks. If you want to explore the local area, your host can arrange vineyard tours, horseback riding and canoeing on the Ombrone River.

The private terrace is the best spot for a cold drink in the evening, with its lounger chair and wooden dining table in the shade. Step through the French doors into the open-plan living area where painted floorboards and driftwood sculptures are a reminder of your seaside locale. We love the nautical design touches and palette of sand and forest green. The sleek, dine-in kitchen has all you need to whip up breakfast, lunch and dinner and boxes brimming with toys lets you know this place is family-friendly. There’s also a vast garden, shared with one other home, with a kids’ playpark and barbecue area.

This Suvereto apartment may be small, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in charm. Walls of exposed stone, sumptuous antique beds and ceilings adorned with wooden beams paint the picture of a traditional Tuscan holiday. Yet, in spite of the compact size, the kitchen and bathroom are sleek, stylish and modern, just the ticket for two. The window seat is our favourite spot – in the mornings, there's nothing better than enjoying an espresso as the smell of fresh-baked bread rises from the bakery below.

One of Tuscany's hidden gems, Suvereto is rife with old-world character – picture medieval walls, cobblestone streets and sidewalk cafes overlooking ancient churches. We love the laid-back pace of life here, but with vineyards, hiking trails and beaches like Spiaggia di Rimigliano all a short drive away, you'll be well-placed for exploring, too.

Time To Rise

On Elba Island, just outside Lacona off the west coast of Italy, this first-floor flat is a hilltop hideaway offering sweeping views of the Tyrrhenian Sea’s turquoise waters. Bright and modern, the open-plan living space is cool and relaxing, with high-beamed ceilings, arty light fixtures, colourful prints and an open-hearth fireplace. Set up for a lazy lunch beneath the pergola – there’s dining for the whole group here. Shared between a handful of stone villas on the same estate, there’s a swimming pool at the bottom of the garden.

Inside, whitewashed wooden ceilings speak of days gone by and there’s a traditional Tuscan farmhouse vibe throughout. Terracotta floors keep things cool underfoot and bedrooms and bathrooms are all super spacious. The kitchen in jolly aquamarine-blue is more than big enough to handle the hustle and bustle of a busy breakfast time too.

Exploring the area, you’ll find the charming village of Lecchi to be a six-minute drive away where the ruins of an ancient castle await. Plus you’re in the Chianti wine region where the hills are dotted with family-run vineyards and wineries galore.

Stepping outside, you’ll find it’s just a short romantic stroll to the medieval piazza, churches, viewing terraces as well as restaurants and cafés. And for explorations further afield, Montepulciano provides easy access to the majestic cities of Tuscany – both Siena and Florence are within driving distance.

By honouring the villa's history – and thereby retaining its character – the home feels traditionally Tuscan with its terracotta tiles and wooden beams. Walk barefoot across the floors to savour the coolness of those tiles on hot days, or light a fire in the wood-burning stove and stare up at the beams, imagining what life would’ve been like here. Nonnas rolling out pastry for tortellini, children helping churn gelato, wine flowing, and bowls of food changing hands in a celebration of ingredients, and life. You might even wish to recreate that – a holiday well spent.

Alternatively, spend lazy afternoons sitting under the vines outside as you watch the sunset on the horizon. Head out to authentic Italian pizzerias for pizza and gnocchi, or make a gelato run before exploring the surroundings.

This elegant home in Tuscany is in a dreamy spot in a valley, in a countryside setting that leads to absolute relaxation. The villa is full of character, with antique furniture and wooden beams, in addition to mesmerising views. 

The outside space is lush and pretty. Roses and lavender have been planted alongside a wealth of trees, making the garden feel like an oasis. In the morning, sip coffee at the table under the gazebo, admiring the views and planning your day. If you’re anything like us, you won’t be able to resist a dip in the hedge-lined swimming pool for long. Dry off on a sun lounger with a good book, or start a table tennis tournament with your friends. 

In the evening, set up outside at the long dining table. You might like to arrange for a local chef to come and cook for you – that way you can enjoy a cocktail hour on the terrace before dining as the sun sets beyond the valley. 

The villa is only a short walk along the river to the centre of peaceful Poggibonsi, so you can easily dine out in the local restaurants or grab a gelato. Montemorli vineyard is just a twenty-minute walk up the hill, while the medieval beauty of San Gimignano is a mere twenty-one-minute drive away. Slightly further afield, you can be in Siena in thirty minutes, and Florence in an hour.  


Verdant Valley

It's homes like this that give Tuscany its reputation as a blissful place which to retreat for a week or three. The surrounding landscape of vineyards and rolling hillsides is as picturesque as you could possibly imagine, while the home itself is bursting with character.

Much of this is down to its long history. Built at the end of the 18th century as a mill, it was converted into a farmhouse before becoming the handsome getaway you see today. This heritage is writ large across the interior, with stone archways, wooden ceiling beams and terracotta tiles underfoot a treat for those that melt at the sight of rustic design – which includes us. The more contemporary features – including the freestanding bathtub and modern kitchen – have been tastefully added to retain this inimitable charm.

Outside, it's a slightly different story. The hot tub and swimming pool in the middle of the garden are comparatively recent additions to the address but are no less welcome for it. As well as that, there are a couple of spots for alfresco feasts to dine among the fragrant flowers and trees that fill the grounds.

Although the location is certainly secluded, you don't have to venture far to find things to see and do. The medieval hilltop town of Montepulciano is only 4.5km away and is famous for its Renaissance-era buildings and globally-coveted wine. A little further afield, the cities of Perugia and Siena are 63 and 67km away respectively, so well within range for a day trip.

It’s all about the good life at this Italian villa. We’re not just talking la dolce vita, but the full, sustainable package. It’s on an enchanting eco lavender farm, so the fields around you are fragrant as perfume and the villa has its own orto (vegetable garden) which you’re welcome to harvest. Perhaps cook fresh-veg-topped pizzas in the antique pizza oven outdoors, and enjoy at one of two terraces, overlooking the rolling countryside. For days at home, there’s a sparkling swimming pool to cool off in, a petanque court and ping pong too. 

We’re impressed by this villa’s eco-credentials, supplied by renewable energy and with natural aromatherapy oils on offer from the lavender farm. Inside, it’s a calming medley of Japanese zen and Scandi-chic touches. The living room is set around a big fireplace and raw-wood tables and wicker lampshades are a nod to your natural surroundings. The kitchen could be the envy of any professional chef, with a huge, range-style cooker perfect for the fresh produce on your doorstep.

Getting out and exploring, you’ve got Italian countryside all around you and the village of Marsiliana is less than ten minutes drive away for supermarkets and pizzerias. Twenty minutes away you are spoiled for choice – from the charming medieval villages of Capalbio and Pitigliano to the glamorous beaches, bars and restaurants of the Silver Coast.

The Lavender Harvest

In the undulating Tuscan countryside, this villa sits atop a hill, right on the ancient oil and wine route through olive groves and vineyards. It’s a fifteen-minute drive from Volterra, a medieval walled town with plenty of farm-to-table restaurants and old churches to explore. And Siena is just under an hour’s drive for a day trip.

Panoramic views take centre stage outdoors, where raised terraces can provide shaded spots for meals outside. From a poolside lounger, you can admire the forest-clad hills around you, before slipping into the turquoise pool to cool off from the sun. Aperitivo is best served on the first-floor terrace, where comfy seating looks out over the countryside.

The villa may have the stone facade and arched windows of a traditional Tuscan farmhouse, but the wall of glass in the living and dining room is a testament to the 21st century. There’s more than enough room for the group to spread out and dine together at two banquet-sized tables inside. Unwind beneath a brick vaulted ceiling in the evening. Chefs will feel right at home in the kitchen – all chrome and steel like the professional kitchens of a Michelin-starred restaurant, but with a wood-topped pasta-making table straight out of a 19th-century farmhouse. 

Hillside Vines

Nestled in the Maremma countryside and surrounded by olive groves, a mere four kilometres from the beach of Castiglione della Pescaia, this charming villa waits to welcome you home. It’s worth noting that the keeper lives on-site in a separate home near the entrance gate, and there’s an annexe on-site for the exclusive use of the owner, but don’t let that detract from everything this home offers. With a poolside gazebo that boasts a living area, dining area and kitchen, an outdoor gym, and a basement floor dedicated to wellness with a sauna, reaction tub, and another living space, there’s something for everyone here.
