Found in the small town of Cisano sul Neva, this home is ideal for those months when the temperature starts to rise. The interior feels cooling thanks to the tiling underfoot and the large doorways that let a breeze circulate inside when opened. There's also plenty of shade to be found even when the sun's at its highest — a covered terrace will play host to many a languorous lunch, while the flourishing garden offers plenty of secluded spots for an afternoon nap. That being said, there are enough perks inside the four walls if you're coming during the autumn and winter. An upright piano in the living room will keep musical guests occupied, while the hydro-massage bath requires no such talent to enjoy — just sit back and let the bubbles do their work. The local town and its pretty churches take fifteen minutes to reach on foot, while the seaside town of Albenga can be reached in the same amount of time in the car.

This home caught our eye for its sea views across the Gulf of Tigullio. And even when you’re indoors, you can still enjoy the water vistas from the living area and some of the bedrooms. We love the outdoor space here, which is well set up for lazy days by the pool and alfresco dining. Hikers will be pleased to hear that there are coastal walks aplenty nearby, and for days at the beach, you’ll find a choice of seaside towns within driving distance. We think this home provides the perfect backdrop for a peaceful getaway with family or friends.

A location like this deserves a unique and truly magical home. Off the beaten track, a ten-minute drive from the coast at San Lorenzo al Mare and half an hour from Imperia, it's set in a picture-perfect rural hamlet on a hillside. Surrounded by rolling hills and ancient olive groves, this place hasn't changed for centuries. In a building that dates from the 18th century, it actually comprises two apartments – a one-bedroom and a two-bedroom, set across four floors. Steep, narrow stairs lead up to the cool, whitewashed attic rooms or down to the converted cellars – bursting with character and authentic charm. The two flats have their own living spaces, and one boasts a small balcony while the other has a dining spot on a rooftop terrace. With hundreds of years of history in its walls, we love the rustic look of its vaulted ceilings, exposed beams and bare stone walls. But that's not to say this place is all about the past. You just need to look in the modern, stainless steel kitchens and admire the mix of antiques and contemporary furniture to see this home has all the comforts of modern-day living. Head to the nearby natural pools of Laghetti di Pietrabruna for a wild swim, buy local farm produce or drive to the beach – the choice is yours.

Tourmaline Dream

What this home may lack in style, it makes up for in location. Nestled in the hills of Moneglia, it commands views across the bay and is well-connected by train to Genoa and the coastal villages of the Cinque Terre. Admire the views from a lounger on the terrace, or head down to the pool, which stays relatively shady and cool thanks to the surrounding trees. The furnishings are a little dated, but at least there are sea views in the upper bedrooms, while the large sliding glass doors mean you're never far away from a sunny seat. Plus, the glass dining table comfortably seats your entire group, so you can also enjoy meals together – that's if you don't wander into Moneglia to try one of the restaurants on the palm-tree-lined streets.

Opalescent Retreat

In the heart of Portovenere, this home's central location means you can drop your bags and stroll straight to the waterfront. Delicious Italian restaurants, historic landmarks, pebble beaches – whatever you fancy, exploring on foot is a breeze. It's certainly not the biggest apartment, but what it lacks in space it makes up for with the fantastic sea views from the balcony, stretching all the way to Palmaria Island – a must-visit while you're in town. Add in the ochre-hued, quintessentially Italian exterior and the other charming terraces, and you can see why it caught our eye.

Reside at this sumptuous family villa perched on the edge of the breathtaking Ligurian coast. 

Fire up the barbie and enjoy alfresco dinners on the patio or strike a pose on the lounger as the kids splash about in the salt-water swimming pool. We loved throwing open the French doors and drinking in the views of the glittering coastline.

Although the home is dedicated to alfresco living, you'll find the interior just as pleasing – there are five bedrooms to choose from, each one decorated in a soothing palette of neutrals. The home is divided into two individual apartments allowing for privacy whichever way you want to cut it. At dusk, when the winds whip up from the sea, step inside and snuggle by the fireplace and watch on as twinkling stars come out to play.

A beach lover's paradise, there are three to choose from in the nearby vicinity. We adored the convenience of stepping from the manicured lawn to the short six-minute walk to Bagni La Rotondo Beach. If you can drag yourself away from this nautical playground, then Genoa, the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, is a twelve-minute car ride away.

Overlooking the waters of Porto Venere Harbour and just a flip-flop from a small beach, this traditional home is the perfect maritime retreat. You can watch all the nautical action unfold from your bougainvillea-clad balcony. Or take a ten-minute amble along the coast to the village’s history-rich centre – it’s been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site for good reason. While the coastal-themed interiors are charming, they will feel dated for some. The bedroom layouts are a little quirky, too, with the main bedroom sleeping three and the final single bed tucked away in the hallway. But we can let that slide for a home with such a one-of-a-kind setting.

We love this coastal villa with its bold mix of classic Italian and Asian-influenced design. The living room has beautiful parquet flooring, polished to a high, mirror-like shine. Dotted around the space you’ll find a bright red lacquered chest and an intricate Chinese cabinet. The walls are decorated with Japanese fans, while a vibrant red feature wall lights up one end like the rising sun. Alongside these treasures sit classic Italian furniture and artworks – it shouldn’t work, but somehow it really does. Meanwhile, the kitchen feels 100% vintage Italian with copper pans lining the walls and retro coffee pots. The outside terrace has sweeping views of the coast and the shining sea beyond, and there’s a barbecue area with shady outside seating. The beautiful gardens that surround the villa, along with the outdoor swimming pool, are shared with a couple of neighbouring villas.

It will be hard to tear yourself away from the sea views at this hillside villa. Separated into the main villa and an annexe, this home used to be a traditional farmhouse and has been lovingly restored with modern amenities while retaining charming features like the exposed wooden beams, stone fireplace, and the original majolica tiles. The villa's gardens extend down the hillside, bordered by Mediterranean plants and herbs, ending in a swimming pool with views over the town. Relax in the shade of a tree with a book, before enjoying lunch on the outdoor terrace. Each of the bedrooms catches the Mediterranean light with their whitewashed walls, and one of the rooms even features an original fireplace. You'll find that there's an innate tranquillity to this home in the middle of the Piedmont countryside. How best to enjoy this peace and quiet? The open kitchen is equipped with an oven, dishwasher, freezer, electric coffee machine, and 4 gas rings. The layout is a little quirky — the only way to get upstairs is via a stone staircase outside the building — but this only adds to the charm of the place. Delightful stone archways reveal yet another hidden terrace or quiet nook to catch up on that holiday paperback, while grotto-like bathrooms and a cute mezzanine bedroom for the kids add a fairytale quality to the experience. Yet for all its tucked away spaces, this semi-detached home has plenty of opportunities for the more sociable among you. We can see the polished kitchen table becoming the hub of the house — somewhere to gather the grown-ups and bambini alike for a delicious Italian feast while you plan your next sun-soaked day in the hills. Then there’s the sun deck with its outdoor dining area and barbecue, not to mention the pretty garden with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside — best admired from a lounger with a cool glass in hand. Privacy, seclusion and utter relaxation is the order of the day here. Indulge in a lazy lie-in (the bedrooms are beautiful rustic affairs — think exposed wooden beams, ornate bedsteads and fluttering curtains). When the sun rises over the olive groves, dive into the private swimming pool and enjoy a moment while the kids burn off some energy in the playground or challenge each other to a game of table football. Rustic Revival

In the exclusive Portofino peninsula, this villa is a ten-minute walk from the harbour's designer shops and seafood restaurants. You'll have private access to the sea on a small rocky platform, and the large terrace is shaded by century-old wisteria with space for alfresco dining. Some of the decor is a little dated and won't be to everyone's taste, but all the bedrooms have lovely sea views. Parking is limited, and although the sea is on your doorstep, it's worth noting that the nearest beach is best reached by public transport.

Lonesome Voyage

This renovated cottage is located in the San Bernardo district of Narzole. The charming villa includes three separate apartments and is situated on top of a hill with stunning panoramic views. The property features a shared garden, a swimming pool, and outdoor amenities such as a barbecue grill and garden furniture. Guests can also take advantage of the bicycles available for use on the premises. The villa features antique furnishings and tasteful decor throughout, including large living spaces with open-hearth fireplaces and satellite TV. There are nine rooms in total, each with its own shower/WC. Other amenities include a large kitchen with modern appliances, heating and air conditioning, free WiFi, and garage parking for up to three cars. For a day trip, take the 45-minute drive to Cinque Terre, a picturesque series of five seaside towns.

Fantastic views and spots to enjoy the Italian warmth abound in this two-storey villa in Liguria. The open-plan living space catches the sun, though we'd prefer to spend our time outside here – with the alfresco dining area in a high-up spot, you get stunning views of the local area as you gulp down Italian cocktails, and the large pool speaks for itself. With the hilly terrain and winding roads, a car is essential here – the closest supermarkets and restaurants are a 7km drive. Further afield, you can head to picturesque Cinque Terre or even cross over into nearby Tuscany.
