This stylish apartment is right around the corner from Termini, Rome's biggest train station, so there's no doubt that the transport links are excellent. But many of the must-see sights can also be reached on foot, including the magnificent Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore five minutes away and The Colosseum just a little further, about a twenty-minute stroll. After fueling up on pasta and gelato at Mercato Centrale Roma across the street, set off for the Trevi Fountain, The Pantheon and The Spanish Steps, all reachable in under half an hour. When you're not off exploring, shopping or sipping Italian wine at one of the bars in this area, rest your tired feet back at home. We love the bold green colours and funky design – picture cowhide rugs, vibrant pop art and leafy wallpaper in the bedroom. The bathroom is also one of our favourites – it has a huge walk-in rain shower that's the perfect way to relax after a busy day. And this pad has more than enough room for two, so there's plenty of space to make yourself at home. In the evenings, pour yourself an aperitif and rustle up a feast in the contemporary kitchen, then end the night with Netflix in bed, nodding off while to the sound of your favourite shows.

This sixth-floor loft apartment does things differently. There’s no TV for starters, and the bedrooms are comfortable, yet not breathtaking. So what caught our discerning eye? Step out onto the 200sq/metre rooftop terrace, overlooking picturesque Rome and all of your questions will be answered. The decked terrace comes with a veranda cover, plenty of sofa seating and a table for alfresco dining – we can think of nothing better than warmer evenings spent out here with friends and family, eating, drinking and laughing as the sun goes down. While there's certainly a Roman rustic charm to the home, with its wooden floorboards and low beamed ceilings, the modern details really bring the living room and kitchen to life. Light pours in through the sleek crittall windows, extending the space out to the terrace and creating a bright and airy kitchen-diner area – the modern breakfast bar is the perfect spot to sip your morning espresso. When – all caffeinated and ready to explore – you do eventually peel yourself away from that beautiful terrace, the home's location is ideal for discovering the city's ancient sights. Walk to the Colosseum in twenty minutes and visit the Roman Forum, under three kilometres from home. Termini train station is also a twenty-minute stroll away, connecting you to the rest of the city in no time at all. While a wander through the immediate neighbourhood will have you passing plenty of pastry shops, traditional trattorias and cocktail bars – with so much to see and do, you'll be spoilt for choice.

This cosy apartment in San Lorenzo is perfect for couples looking to explore Rome. That said, it can sleep up to four guests – but two will draw the short straw and be sleeping on the sofa bed in the living room. It’s also worth noting that the bedroom is on a mezzanine level, so at full occupancy, privacy is limited. With a stripped-back, fuss-free style, it may not be to everyone’s taste, but with easy access to public transport, it’s ideal for exploring the city.

Before we even stepped foot in this apartment we fell in love with it. Located just beside Termini station, you're connected to the entire Eternal city, while also being only a nineteen-minute walk away from the Colosseum. You really couldn't be better placed. Inside, the home has a warm, genuine feel to it with vibrant patterned wallpapers, pops of colour and dark wooden furnishings. Sleep soundly in the charming bedrooms where plenty of natural light pours through the Juliet balconies and into the rustic yet homely interior. Take to the stylish breakfast bar for a quick coffee, before exploring the iconic sights of Rome. With great links to the wider area and Italy as a whole, if you're ever looking to roam beyond the city (unlikely, we know), a trip back into the past to the ancient site of Pompeii is an excellent excursion and is just over two hours on the train.

It’s a little world in itself, with furniture, awnings, vibrant shrubbery and even a kitchen. Inside, the apartment oozes comfort with a quiet study space for reading and a stylish living room, where you can put your feet up after a hectic day. You can reach the ancient relics of the bustling Municipio I in ten minutes by car.

Simply charming, you'll be captivated by the quaint Roman charm from the moment you arrive here. Set away from the more touristy areas, the home is situated on Via Tiburtina, a road with history going all the way back to the third century BCE, and these days it’s a bustling thoroughfare, always packed with locals going about their business. Get to know the public transport system and hop on the underground metro or bus routes to reach Rome's best known historic attractions, with most sights averaging around a twenty-five-minute commute from this home. That being said, you'll never be far from authentic Italian eateries and restaurants here, and in the Tiburtino district, you'll be eating top-notch, quality pizza and pasta as if you were a local, rather than being sucked in by tourist traps and prices elsewhere in the city.

This beautiful penthouse apartment is just the ticket for those looking for a relaxing stay away from the tourist crowds. Located in Rome’s Sallustiano neighbourhood, you’re far enough away from the city’s heavily crowded areas while still being able to reach all the main sights on foot or by public transport. Inside, a neutral palette sets a calming scene with wood floors and pops of blue in the pared-back decor. You’ll immediately be struck by the dazzling amount of natural light in the living area, thanks to the large glass doors that open up onto the first of two terraces. This first one – off of the living room – is a whopping 538 square feet and boasts several tables and chairs, a covered seating area as well as an outdoor shower to enjoy. This is the ideal spot to congregate at sundown over aperitifs and alfresco meals, while the second terrace – up the flight of stairs in the living room – is a rooftop haven with its sun chairs and equally majestic rooftop vistas, ideal for catching those Italian afternoon rays. Back inside, the two bedrooms are simple yet elegant, offering dreamy canvases for a blissful night’s sleep. When you’re ready to head out and explore, make a beeline for Villa Borghese (a ten-minute walk) or stroll just twenty minutes to throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain. It can't get more central than this – you'll be within walking distance of the Trevi Fountain, Villa Borghese, and countless eateries. After a long day on your feet, you'll appreciate the indoor Jacuzzi waiting for you back home. The overall design is contemporary and chic, featuring open-concept bathrooms that ooze luxury (though privacy is, of course, limited). Travelling as a group of six? Upon request, two guests can kip on single beds in the living area, but we think this home is best for four.

This modern apartment boasts an excellent location in Rome – it’s just a two-minute walk from the Spanish Steps. You’ll be a short walk from many of the Eternal City’s main attractions, including Piazza del Popolo and Villa Borghese. There are also excellent shopping, dining out, and transport options practically on your doorstep. The apartment is contemporary and functional, with high ceilings and a convenient kitchen. At full occupancy, privacy is somewhat limited – two guests will sleep on a sofa bed on the open mezzanine above one of the bedrooms.

Step into the Art Nouveau sunroom of this period apartment and just soak up its vintage style and warm character. Surrounded by extraordinary windows – some frosted for privacy, others with stained glass – along with huge houseplants and antique furnishings, it's a striking space. Read on the sofa or linger over coffee at the dining table in the morning light. Overlooking a lush garden, it's certainly the highlight of the home. But there's plenty more to love about this place. Small, but perfectly functional, the kitchen leads to a hallway and a snug TV room with its own dining table. The pretty master bedroom is beautifully decorated, with plenty of storage and a desk, while the ensuite second bedroom has its own desk and a fabulous tiled floor. There's even the option of adding a cot if you're travelling as a family. With such easy access around the city from this spot, you'll be surprised how peaceful and quiet it is – yet it's surrounded by excellent shops and restaurants and it's just a fifteen-minute walk from the Colosseum.

With heaps of Italian soul and rustic charm, this quiet, well-kept and beautifully appointed apartment offers everything needed for that dolce vita. For the location, you're surrounded by local authenticity and just a seven-minute walk to the emblematic Colosseum. Find an assortment of eateries, wine bars and classy cafés to enjoy an alfresco lunch in the sun, before working off any over-indulgences with a gentle fourteen-minute stroll to Trevi Fountain – pennies at the ready. We also have to mention the apartment being on the cusp of Monti and Campitelli – both are full of beautiful piazzas, windy backstreets and family-run trattorias. Back home, we think there's somewhat of a contemporary Scandi feel, with plain bedspreads, pared-back furnishings and white shelved walls. Modern and minimalist, you'll also notice the elegant marble floors, quirky wallpaper prints and low-hanging light bulbs that we really loved.

It’s easy to work out where the owner found inspiration for this gallery-like apartment – all you need to do is wander around the local neighbourhood of Monti. Bustling cafés, ornate architecture, and ancient grandeur is all around. A nine-minute stroll in either direction will take you to two of the city’s most majestic sights – the Colosseum and the Foro Romano. With antiquity and arts all around you, the theme continues as you return home.

Many of us are content with painting walls in a calming, neutral tone, but the owner of this apartment had bigger plans. In a nod to the frescoes of the city, the walls are painted in trompe-l'œil effect – with clever positioning of the mirrors, the artwork appears in 3D. While the kitchen tiles and dining table have also enjoyed some brushwork, and this art project was just one effort in the restoration of this nineteenth-century home.

We love the terracotta-coloured tilework, adorned by vintage pieces of furniture dotted throughout the living space and bedroom. Pad across tiles and decorative rugs towards the double doors – this scene isn’t an optical illusion. You’ve got a private balconette with colourful flowers and scenes of Roman streets below. Is there any better spot for a chilled glass of prosecco?

Despite its position in an old, atmospheric square near Campo de’ Fiori, Falconry has been renovated recently, and most of the furniture has been made to measure, making the whole place feel very well crafted. Everything fits together, from the parquet floor to the various lamps, and even the terrace is taken care of, and not an afterthought. High up among the rooftops, it feels like a little refuge from the hectic city below.

This apartment may be in the heart of Rome, but there’s something distinctly country-chic about the decor. Period pieces – dressers, doors and the kitchen table – are all rough white-washed and feel rustic. The sound system is vintage, and the armchairs in the living room are upholstered in gloriously kitsch floral patterns. The jewel in the crown of the apartment is the sprawling outdoor terrace, which has sofas in sunny spots for a dose of vitamin D, and shaded nooks under parasols for when the heat gets too much. The bamboo pergola covered a couple of outdoor gas hobs, so you can cook and dine alfresco. Flowers and pot plants bloom for every corner and climb trellises for a bit of privacy. If you want to know just how central you are, just head out to the downstairs balcony and spot the Colosseum at the end of your street.

And when thoughts turn to food, you’re spoilt for choice here –⁠ with bustling coffee bars, authentic trattorias, and high-end restaurants all just a short jaunt from your door. Back at home, this apartment makes quite a first impression with its grand, period exterior and a spiraling internal staircase leading to your door. The décor pairs contemporary furnishings alongside period features, including exposed original brickwork and timber-clad ceilings of high and mighty proportions. And despite its prime central location, our guests love how quiet this home feels –⁠ particularly in the bedrooms, which overlook a peaceful internal courtyard. Finding a street close to it all but not inundated with tourists is the holy grail in Rome – and that's precisely where you'll find this apartment. We call it the Goldilocks zone. But, ever the professional, your host Michele hasn’t used that as an excuse to rest on his laurels. The flat itself is in perfect condition, and while it doesn’t have the feeling of a family home, that’s often a good thing when it's not a sprawling home with space for all the host's personal items. The two bedrooms are on opposite sides of the flat, which is perfect for groups of friends travelling together, though families might want little ones closer by, or not. We understand. Sandwiched between the river and lively Campo de' Fiori, you're in a prime location to explore the city. The square is home to the city's most vibrant (and occasionally overpriced) street market (Monday-Saturday mornings). Still, this famous foodie haven is a good place to stock up on fresh produce, just a five-minute walk from your apartment. Cross over the stone footbridge, Ponte Sisto, and within a couple of minutes, you'll be immersed in trendy Trastevere. With its cobbled streets lined with charmingly faded facades, innovative trattorias, and craft cocktail bars, there's plenty to keep you occupied well into the night.

Finding somewhere that can comfortably sleep eight (and ten, at a stretch) in the Jewish Quarter isn’t as straightforward as you might think. Finding somewhere that can comfortably sleep eight and has a view as good as Teatro’s is even harder. It looks down onto the Largo di Torre Argentina, which holds the ruins of four temples and Pompey’s Theatre. It’s a fantastic spot, and Teatro makes the most of it, with a simple design intended to not interfere.

Brilliantly situated in Monti, one of Rome's most ancient neighbourhoods, this top-floor apartment is truly something special. There's no question that the private terrace is the crown jewel of the place. With a charming bistro table and an abundance of sunshine, it's the perfect spot to start the morning with an espresso and a pastry – and of course, end the evening with a bottle of Italian wine as the world passes by below you. 

Elsewhere, you'll find two quaint Juliet balconies – not ideal for sitting, but the view of the bustling street below is as Roman as it gets. The rest of the apartment is filled with light, packed with character and super stylish. Curl up on the cream-coloured sofa and watch a flick on Netflix, rustle up homecooked pasta in the kitchen and work from home at the desk in the second bedroom. There's more than enough space here to spread out and make yourself at home.

And the options for exploring are endless. The forum and the Colosseum are less than a ten-minute walk away – and there's plenty more sightseeing where that came from. Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore is also within walking distance and two metro lines are nearby for when you fancy visiting landmarks further into the city. Or just stay local and wine and dine the night away at the restaurants, cafes and bars on your doorstep, including a delicious gelateria right downstairs for some quintessentially Italian gelato. 

It Will Be So

Tucked between Piazza di Spagna and the Villa Borghese, you couldn't ask for a better spot to base yourself during your Roman holiday. The cobbled street outside is utterly charming, and even with the crowds milling about a few hundred metres away, it's quite peaceful. The sprawling Villa Borghese is just five minutes away – it's an absolute must-visit, home to lush greenery, city views and beautiful sculptures, plus it's where you'll find the Gigi Proietti Globe Theatre and Museo Pietro Canonica. You're also not far from other tourist attractions – the Spanish Steps are a ten-minute walk, while the Pantheon is reachable in twenty. Inside, the apartment is bright and roomy, with a sleek kitchen and two cosy sofas that you'll want to sink into after a busy. We particularly liked the beautiful artwork of local sights that adorn the walls, and there's even a delicious restaurant downstairs when you don't feel like cooking. Deep within the narrow, medieval streets of Rome, this period building hides a surprisingly modern apartment for up to five guests. It's not a huge space but it's been cleverly configured to make the most of what it has – and to make it feel comfortable and high-end at the same time. Decorated in on-trend whites, creams and greys, it's bright and fresh. The kitchenette is stowed away in a cupboard-like space in the living room and while it's perfect for the basics, it's not going to appeal to keen home cooks – but this is Rome, and some of the best restaurants, cafes and bars in the world are right on your doorstep. Our favourite feature of this home is the view onto the charming Piazza dei Satiri outside. And while we're talking location, the famous Campo de’ Fiori market is just around the corner.

The Duchess is a comfortable place with lots going for it, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t start with that view. A city like Rome is full of views, but even so, this one is special, and the terrace itself is beautiful, with the furniture, the awning and the flowers all around (in summer, at least). This, along with the various antiques inside, makes you feel as if you’re in a Rome that existed 200 years ago, one that’s since been lost. 


The Duchess

Within walking distance of Villa Borghese and the Trevi Fountain, this apartment is ideal for sightseeing. You'll have central Rome at your fingertips here, whether you're looking for restaurants, landmarks, or high-end shops. Despite its small size, the layout is functional for friends and families. The kitchen is compact but has everything you'll need to whip up light fare – although we think it's a great excuse to try the local eateries – and the bedrooms are bright if a little snug. We think it makes a convenient, fuss-free base for those keen to spend most of their time exploring the city.

Roman Pomes

Tucked away in a historic building once belonging to a famous Baroque painter, this apartment offers a refreshing city sanctuary. There’s a private terrace for laidback gatherings. Inside, the rooms are well suited to families and groups in search of simplicity, ease and comfort. You’ll find all the essentials you could need and the location couldn’t be better. From here, it’s just a short stroll to the famous Piazza di Campo de Fiori, while iconic sights like the Piazza Navona and the Pantheon are within easy reach.
