From the hanging chair to sun loungers, the outside space offers ample opportunities to enjoy the views. Plus, there’s a covered terrace for alfresco dining. The sleeping quarters are on the lower ground floor with direct access to the garden and pool (something to keep in mind if you’re staying with young children), and the main bedroom has an open-concept en-suite, which may not be to everyone’s taste. If you fancy a change of scenery, the town of Castel del Piano is a short drive away.

This is an idyll, where the scent of lavender carries on the breeze. 

The garden is a haven of tranquillity and natural beauty. Float in the swimming pool while you watch bees bob around the flowers, the hum of insects the only sound to disturb the peace. It’s in Umbria but is just 7 kilometres from Tuscany, making this home a great choice of base if you plan on seeing more of Italy. We recommend hiring a car to get the most out of your stay. The apartment is equipped with everything you might need for a short break, including a desk for those working remotely during their stay.

Traditional and cosy, this villa has all the hallmarks of an Umbrian getaway. The private pool is open in the summer and boasts panoramic views of the surrounding hills. Indoors, there's plenty of character to admire – the home was built in 1616, after all. Our favourite spot is the conservatory-style lounge, with its large windows showing off the scenery. Two bedrooms are located in a separate annexe, making it ideal for those wanting a bit more space and privacy. As for location, you'll be based near the medieval village of Monte Castello di Vibio and within easy driving distance of Todi, Perugia, and Orvieto.

Floor-to-ceiling black-framed windows and a sensitive renovation have turned this 16th-century Umbrian dovecote tower into one of the region's smartest stays. Behind the stone tower, the jagged cliffs and town of Orvieto loom, while in front, the rolling hills stretch before you. Interiors meld old with new. Flagstone floors and antique furniture sit alongside steel ceiling pipes and geometric prints. As one would expect in a tower, there are several spiralling staircases – as well as gawp-worthy views. Push open the sliding doors in the grey, country-style kitchen and step out onto the terrace. A built-in barbecue and wrought-iron table overlook the Italian countryside, while a large vegetable garden and fruit trees provide the freshest ingredients. Continue down to find 1.5 hectares of garden with Etruscan origin and the swimming pool, which was once an agricultural fountain. Forget about any form of work, now all you have to worry about is which spot to pick around the water, with the rush of the nearby brook providing background music.

You can still dine with a view indoors, thanks to the sunroom with its walls of glass – the ideal spot for breakfast. While the rest of the tower and annexe is all wood-beam ceilings and terracotta floors, the kitchen feels sleek and modern with a dedicated wine fridge to chill your orvietos and pinot grigios. Apart from aspiring chefs, there’s plenty to entertain all kinds of visitors here – hit the gym and unwind with a sauna session after, head to the media room for a movie night or tuck yourself away with a book from the big collection of holiday reads. Winding your way up the staircases of the old tower, the view gets better and better. You’ll find bedrooms on the upper levels, with fabulous antique beds and ensuites – some with slipper tubs for a long soak.

Out here on the Tuscan- Lazio-Umbrian border, hiking trails snake through the Monte Rufeno national park and vineyards tumble town the hillsides (in fact, there’s a winery on the estate).
