A location like this deserves a unique and truly magical home. Off the beaten track, a ten-minute drive from the coast at San Lorenzo al Mare and half an hour from Imperia, it's set in a picture-perfect rural hamlet on a hillside. Surrounded by rolling hills and ancient olive groves, this place hasn't changed for centuries. In a building that dates from the 18th century, it actually comprises two apartments – a one-bedroom and a two-bedroom, set across four floors. Steep, narrow stairs lead up to the cool, whitewashed attic rooms or down to the converted cellars – bursting with character and authentic charm. The two flats have their own living spaces, and one boasts a small balcony while the other has a dining spot on a rooftop terrace. With hundreds of years of history in its walls, we love the rustic look of its vaulted ceilings, exposed beams and bare stone walls. But that's not to say this place is all about the past. You just need to look in the modern, stainless steel kitchens and admire the mix of antiques and contemporary furniture to see this home has all the comforts of modern-day living. Head to the nearby natural pools of Laghetti di Pietrabruna for a wild swim, buy local farm produce or drive to the beach – the choice is yours.

Tourmaline Dream

Overlooking the city of Imperia and the Liguria coast, this modern apartment is just the ticket for a carefree Italian getaway. The panoramic views are the star of the show here – the large windows in the living area face the sea and port, while the bedrooms look towards the mountains. And there's no better place to admire the views than the balcony, which features a dining table for alfresco meals and evening drinks while the sun goes down. But the scenery is not all we love about this home. The sleek interior is light, roomy and ultra-contemporary, yet it still feels like a cosy place to relax and unwind after a day of exploring. Meander through the charming streets, dine at one of the seaside eateries or take a tour of Villa Grock, once home to the greatest clown (yes, clown) in Europe. Whatever you get up to, this apartment is the perfect base to take it all in.

Coastal Peaks

You'll find that there's an innate tranquillity to this home in the middle of the Piedmont countryside. How best to enjoy this peace and quiet? Well, the swimming pool will be the obvious choice during the warmer months, but there are plenty of equally pleasant spots out in the garden or under the pergola.

If the temperature ever takes a dip at any point, the table in the conservatory still gives you the opportunity to watch the world go by, while there's also an open-hearth fireplace to light up once the sun's gone down. This rather traditional source of warmth is in keeping with the home's rustic style, as seen with the exposed stonework and country-style kitchen.

Although you're more than welcome to never leave the address during your stay, the closest town, Vesime, takes five minutes to reach in the car and offers an outdoor swimming pool and a castle to explore. The city of Acqui Terme is half an hour's drive, too.

What The Heart Wants

Found in the small town of Cisano sul Neva, this home is ideal for those months when the temperature starts to rise. The interior feels cooling thanks to the tiling underfoot and the large doorways that let a breeze circulate inside when opened. There's also plenty of shade to be found even when the sun's at its highest — a covered terrace will play host to many a languorous lunch, while the flourishing garden offers plenty of secluded spots for an afternoon nap. That being said, there are enough perks inside the four walls if you're coming during the autumn and winter. An upright piano in the living room will keep musical guests occupied, while the hydro-massage bath requires no such talent to enjoy — just sit back and let the bubbles do their work. The local town and its pretty churches take fifteen minutes to reach on foot, while the seaside town of Albenga can be reached in the same amount of time in the car.

Stream of Consciousness

For families or groups travelling together, this collection of two apartments in a historical 18th-century building is an ideal choice. With a kitchen and living room each, a balcony, and shared terraces and gardens to lounge and dine in, there's plenty of space for everyone to relax. It's in the heart of the medieval town of Dolcedo, where you'll find authentic eateries, bakeries, and bars – along with a range of walking trails right from your front door. When you're ready to venture further afield, you'll find the coastal towns and beaches of Porto Maurizio and Oneglia a twenty-minute drive away. 

Garden Veranda

This villa is a dreamy destination for an idyllic holiday on the Italian Riviera. Nestled on a lush hillside overlooking the bay of San Michele di Pagana, it has a picturesque pool, stunning sea views from almost every angle, and plenty of space inside to make yourself comfy. We especially love the balconies off the bedrooms, where you can wake up to the sight and sound of the sun-kissed waves. All this, and it’s also walking distance to the beach, as well as shops, restaurants, and a supermarket. Day trips to Portofino (for designer shopping and yacht-spotting) and Genoa (for sightseeing in the Old City) are easy too.

A Seaside Getaway

Enjoy an idyllic Italian getaway at this gorgeous traditional villa, providing glorious views of the Gulf of Poets and the leafy Ligurian countryside. Sitting up on an elevated position just outside La Spezia, and surrounded by olive groves, this home is the perfect peaceful retreat for when you want to explore the hills and valleys of rural Italy.

Inside, you'll find beautiful farmhouse interiors that have an almost fairytale feel, with original features that have been recently restored, along with exposed stone walls, wood beam ceilings and grand brick archways. The kitchen area is great for cooking up all your favourite meals during your stay, with a dining set where you can tuck in with family and friends.

You'll be utterly charmed by the outside areas, too – there's a private pool here that's surrounded by sun loungers, so you can spend the day alternating between soaking up the sunshine and cooling off in the water. There's also a covered terrace here, with a lounge area for resting with your morning coffee as you watch the sunrise, and a dining table for sipping on bellinis as you watch the sunset.

Poolside Bellinis

With far-reaching views over the Ligurian Sea, this chic villa sits on a stunning stretch of coast named the Riviera dei Fiori. With its old ties to olive growth and coral fishing, you'll be staying three kilometres from ancient Cervo, where you can try local produce in the nearby restaurants. Alternatively, perhaps hiking along the trails at Parco comunale del Ciapà before a picturesque picnic is more your style.

One unique feature of this home is the private living space adjoining the main bedroom, so you can share a romantic breakfast for two each morning. Or, if you're all about spending quality time together, simply gather your loved ones out on the plant-filled terrace and make some memories. From lazy days to chatty nights, this outside area is where you'll plunge into your infinity pool and enjoy alfresco pasta dinners. After an adventurous road trip, just come into the cosy lounge and plan tomorrow's excursion over a glass of wine.

Refresh Me

Wander a little off the beaten path from promenades lined with orange trees and stumble upon this villa that may as well be the setting for an Italian romance novel. Split across two separate buildings, you'll find elements of classic Italian fashion, while parquet and tiled flooring sprawls the home, giving it a palatial ambience fit for those with a knack for the classical. Vistas of the sea, countryside, and town set the backdrop for your days spent lazing between the pool, the wonderfully manicured gardens, and the shaded lunch terrace. Getting to Diano Marina beach is easy – in just a few moments, you can be putting your feet up on a clementine coloured sun lounger and taking shade from the hot sun beneath a green striped umbrella. In the region of Liguria, Diano Marina is exactly the laid-back atmosphere one dreams of when they think of summers on the Italian Riviera. 

City Of Orange Trees

What this home may lack in style, it makes up for in location. Nestled in the hills of Moneglia, it commands views across the bay and is well-connected by train to Genoa and the coastal villages of the Cinque Terre. Admire the views from a lounger on the terrace, or head down to the pool, which stays relatively shady and cool thanks to the surrounding trees. The furnishings are a little dated, but at least there are sea views in the upper bedrooms, while the large sliding glass doors mean you're never far away from a sunny seat. Plus, the glass dining table comfortably seats your entire group, so you can also enjoy meals together – that's if you don't wander into Moneglia to try one of the restaurants on the palm-tree-lined streets.

Opalescent Retreat

Sitting on the majestic hillside of Imperia, this apartment opens its doors to an authentic stay on the Italian Riviera.

Tucked in a quiet spot ten-minutes’ drive from the sea, this compact yet characterful apartment offers a rustic retreat near the Italian Riviera. It packs plenty of charm into its modest floorplan, along with a kitchen for cooking at home and a balcony for breakfast or pre-dinner drinks. The single bed is on the small side, and there’s a steep staircase to navigate between the two floors. But it’s the location that makes this a great pick – satisfyingly serene yet close to the coast for seaside sightseeing.
