Found in the small town of Cisano sul Neva, this home is ideal for those months when the temperature starts to rise. The interior feels cooling thanks to the tiling underfoot and the large doorways that let a breeze circulate inside when opened. There's also plenty of shade to be found even when the sun's at its highest — a covered terrace will play host to many a languorous lunch, while the flourishing garden offers plenty of secluded spots for an afternoon nap. That being said, there are enough perks inside the four walls if you're coming during the autumn and winter. Hidden in the hills of the Langhe, you'll find this spacious, scenic villa. Only 6 kilometres from Alba and 10 kilometres from Barolo, you'll have lots to discover outside your door, too. Do bear in mind, however, due to the open-plan living–sleeping areas, we'd say this property is best suited for a family or a close group of friends.

Step inside to relax in the delightfully furnished interiors; on the ground floor, you can find an open-plan living room with velvet sofas inviting you to sink in and enjoy the company of your family or friends. The spacious kitchen boasts enough equipment for every aspiring chef, with a bar table, stools, and a dining table to allow big groups to gather for a home-cooked meal. All three suites – one on this level and two upstairs – exude elegance and taste, with king-size beds, walls adorned in art and wallpaper, plus en-suite bathrooms for extra privacy. What this home may lack in style, it makes up for in location. Nestled in the hills of Moneglia, it commands views across the bay and is well-connected by train to Genoa and the coastal villages of the Cinque Terre. Admire the views from a lounger on the terrace, or head down to the pool, which stays relatively shady and cool thanks to the surrounding trees. The furnishings are a little dated, but at least there are sea views in the upper bedrooms, while the large sliding glass doors mean you're never far away from a sunny seat. Plus, the glass dining table comfortably seats your entire group, so you can also enjoy meals together – that's if you don't wander into Moneglia to try one of the restaurants on the palm-tree-lined streets.

Enjoy an idyllic Italian getaway at this gorgeous traditional villa, providing glorious views of the Gulf of Poets and the leafy Ligurian countryside. Sitting up on an elevated position just outside La Spezia, and surrounded by olive groves, this home is the perfect peaceful retreat for when you want to explore the hills and valleys of rural Italy.

Inside, you'll find beautiful farmhouse interiors that have an almost fairytale feel, with original features that have been recently restored, along with exposed stone walls, wood beam ceilings and grand brick archways. The kitchen area is great for cooking up all your favourite meals during your stay, with a dining set where you can tuck in with family and friends.

You'll be utterly charmed by the outside areas, too – there's a private pool here that's surrounded by sun loungers, so you can spend the day alternating between soaking up the sunshine and cooling off in the water. There's also a covered terrace here, with a lounge area for resting with your morning coffee as you watch the sunrise, and a dining table for sipping on bellinis as you watch the sunset.

Perched on a hilltop above Santa Margherita Ligure, this villa puts you on the route of the Cinque Terre – five towns that cluster rainbow-bright around coves and harbours. It’s a six-minute walk into the charming town centre for meals on the waterfront, just remember it’s a steep walk back up the hill. But the views are worth it – gaze out over the rooftops and shimmering sea from the sprawling terrace. It’s all about dining, reclining and unwinding in the pool or hot tub out here. Two kitchens (one indoors and one covered outdoors) will keep the chef of the group happy and sliding open the glass doors blends the terrace with the huge, open living room.

Fantastic views and spots to enjoy the Italian warmth abound in this two-storey villa in Liguria. The open-plan living space catches the sun, though we'd prefer to spend our time outside here – with the alfresco dining area in a high-up spot, you get stunning views of the local area as you gulp down Italian cocktails, and the large pool speaks for itself. With the hilly terrain and winding roads, a car is essential here – the closest supermarkets and restaurants are a 7km drive. Further afield, you can head to picturesque Cinque Terre or even cross over into nearby Tuscany.

A location like this deserves a unique and truly magical home. Off the beaten track, a ten-minute drive from the coast at San Lorenzo al Mare and half an hour from Imperia, it's set in a picture-perfect rural hamlet on a hillside. Surrounded by rolling hills and ancient olive groves, this place hasn't changed for centuries. In a building that dates from the 18th century, it actually comprises two apartments – a one-bedroom and a two-bedroom, set across four floors. Steep, narrow stairs lead up to the cool, whitewashed attic rooms or down to the converted cellars – bursting with character and authentic charm. The two flats have their own living spaces, and one boasts a small balcony while the other has a dining spot on a rooftop terrace. With hundreds of years of history in its walls, we love the rustic look of its vaulted ceilings, exposed beams and bare stone walls. But that's not to say this place is all about the past. You just need to look in the modern, stainless steel kitchens and admire the mix of antiques and contemporary furniture to see this home has all the comforts of modern-day living. Head to the nearby natural pools of Laghetti di Pietrabruna for a wild swim, buy local farm produce or drive to the beach – the choice is yours.

Right in the lap of the rolling hills of Tuscany and Liguria, every waking moment at this home is set against surreal views. The apartment is a modern and stylishly furnished 2-room apartment on two levels. The lower level features one room with a French bed and a shower/WC, while the upper level offers an open living/sleeping room with one bed, a dining table, satellite TV, international TV channels, and heating stove. The kitchen is fully equipped with a mini-oven, dishwasher, 4 induction hot plates, and electric coffee machine. Other amenities include WiFi internet access, washing machine, children's high chair, and baby cot. Guests can enjoy the scenic view from the balcony which has outdoor furniture for relaxation. Visitors can also purchase farm products locally.

Overlooking the waters of Porto Venere Harbour and just a flip-flop from a small beach, this traditional home is the perfect maritime retreat. You can watch all the nautical action unfold from your bougainvillea-clad balcony. Or take a ten-minute amble along the coast to the village’s history-rich centre – it’s been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site for good reason. While the coastal-themed interiors are charming, they will feel dated for some. The bedroom layouts are a little quirky, too, with the main bedroom sleeping three and the final single bed tucked away in the hallway. But we can let that slide for a home with such a one-of-a-kind setting.

Although the home is dedicated to alfresco living, you'll find the interior just as pleasing – there are five bedrooms to choose from, each one decorated in a soothing palette of neutrals. The home is divided into two individual apartments allowing for privacy whichever way you want to cut it. At dusk, when the winds whip up from the sea, step inside and snuggle by the fireplace and watch on as twinkling stars come out to play.

A beach lover's paradise, there are three to choose from in the nearby vicinity. We adored the convenience of stepping from the manicured lawn to the short six-minute walk to Bagni La Rotondo Beach. If you can drag yourself away from this nautical playground, then Genoa, the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, is a twelve-minute car ride away.

You'll find that there's an innate tranquillity to this home in the middle of the Piedmont countryside. How best to enjoy this peace and quiet? Well, the swimming pool will be the obvious choice during the warmer months, but there are plenty of equally pleasant spots out in the garden or under the pergola.

If the temperature ever takes a dip at any point, the table in the conservatory still gives you the opportunity to watch the world go by, while there's also an open-hearth fireplace to light up once the sun's gone down. This rather traditional source of warmth is in keeping with the home's rustic style, as seen with the exposed stonework and country-style kitchen.

Although you're more than welcome to never leave the address during your stay, the closest town, Vesime, takes five minutes to reach in the car and offers an outdoor swimming pool and a castle to explore. The city of Acqui Terme is half an hour's drive, too.

In the exclusive Portofino peninsula, this villa is a ten-minute walk from the harbour's designer shops and seafood restaurants. You'll have private access to the sea on a small rocky platform, and the large terrace is shaded by century-old wisteria with space for alfresco dining. Parking is limited, and although the sea is on your doorstep, it's worth noting that the nearest beach is best reached by public transport.
