What this home may lack in style, it makes up for in location. Nestled in the hills of Moneglia, it commands views across the bay and is well-connected by train to Genoa and the coastal villages of the Cinque Terre. Admire the views from a lounger on the terrace, or head down to the pool, which stays relatively shady and cool thanks to the surrounding trees. The furnishings are a little dated, but at least there are sea views in the upper bedrooms, while the large sliding glass doors mean you're never far away from a sunny seat. Plus, the glass dining table comfortably seats your entire group, so you can also enjoy meals together – that's if you don't wander into Moneglia to try one of the restaurants on the palm-tree-lined streets.

This home has a particularly impressive location. It's nestled within not one, but two UNESCO World Heritage sites – the Vineyard Landscape of Piedmont and the Sacred Mountains of Piedmont and Lombardy. And, with 17 hectares of land surrounding the house, and several rare white truffle trees, there's no denying this is a special spot. 

Much of the house dates back to the 19th century, with an even older Medieval section inside, and there's a sense of history in every corner. However, that's not to say that it's old-fashioned – the host has carefully selected a fresh colour scheme and provided plenty of modern conveniences to enjoy. Fire up the coffee machine and sip your morning espresso on the balcony, before grabbing your book and picking a sun lounger to catch some rays. When the temperature rises, simply slip into the swimming pool and float under the blue sky, or head for some shade under the portico. 

Walkers will be delighted with the range of hiking trails throughout this region, which guarantee incredible views of the luscious landscape. Wine lovers are also well catered for, with several nearby vineyards where you can try the local vintages. Head to the nearby natural pools of Laghetti di Pietrabruna for a wild swim, buy local farm produce or drive to the beach – the choice is yours.

Light up the log fire burner in the humble living room when it's cold and open up the floor-to-ceiling windows to let the fresh air in when it's hot. The open-plan living area will ensure a sociable stay from the inside, while the large terrace with a dining table and chairs serve perfectly for those long summer evenings of dining alfresco. There is also a relaxing corner under the pergola, where you can lounge around come day or night – it's the perfect spot to find some shade or watch the sunset. With Turin just an hours drive away, you're secluded and out of the action at this retreat in Sanico, however, feel rest assured that you're not too far away from the city's sights should you wish to explore further afield. 



Over the Rolling Hills

You'll find that there's an innate tranquillity to this home in the middle of the Piedmont countryside. How best to enjoy this peace and quiet? Well, the swimming pool will be the obvious choice during the warmer months, but there are plenty of equally pleasant spots out in the garden or under the pergola.

If the temperature ever takes a dip at any point, the table in the conservatory still gives you the opportunity to watch the world go by, while there's also an open-hearth fireplace to light up once the sun's gone down. At night, unwind in the jacuzzi as stars fill the sky, before heading indoors to sleep soundly in one of the gorgeous wood-panelled bedrooms. We love the mix of rustic furnishings interspersed with modern kitchens and sleek bathrooms—you’ll be very comfortable here without sacrificing an iota of charm.

Roughly hewn stone, exposed brickwork and tumbling terraces all give the impression this rambling rural retreat has been carved from the Ligurian hillside itself. The layout is a little quirky — the only way to get upstairs is via a stone staircase outside the building — but this only adds to the charm of the place. Delightful stone archways reveal yet another hidden terrace or quiet nook to catch up on that holiday paperback, while grotto-like bathrooms and a cute mezzanine bedroom for the kids add a fairytale quality to the experience. Yet for all its tucked away spaces, this semi-detached home has plenty of opportunities for the more sociable among you. We can see the polished kitchen table becoming the hub of the house — somewhere to gather the grown-ups and bambini alike for a delicious Italian feast while you plan your next sun-soaked day in the hills. Then there’s the sun deck with its outdoor dining area and barbecue, not to mention the pretty garden with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside — best admired from a lounger with a cool glass in hand. Privacy, seclusion and utter relaxation is the order of the day here. Indulge in a lazy lie-in (the bedrooms are beautiful rustic affairs — think exposed wooden beams, ornate bedsteads and fluttering curtains). When the sun rises over the olive groves, dive into the private swimming pool and enjoy a moment while the kids burn off some energy in the playground or challenge each other to a game of table football. There’s a supermarket and restaurant within a few minutes drive, so you can stock up on supplies for your next pasta-based extravaganza. We love this coastal villa with its bold mix of classic Italian and Asian-influenced design. The living room has beautiful parquet flooring, polished to a high, mirror-like shine. Dotted around the space you’ll find a bright red lacquered chest and an intricate Chinese cabinet. The walls are decorated with Japanese fans, while a vibrant red feature wall lights up one end like the rising sun. Alongside these treasures sit classic Italian furniture and artworks – it shouldn’t work, but somehow it really does. Meanwhile, the kitchen feels 100% vintage Italian with copper pans lining the walls and retro coffee pots. The outside terrace has sweeping views of the coast and the shining sea beyond, and there’s a barbecue area with shady outside seating. The beautiful gardens that surround the villa, along with the outdoor swimming pool, are shared with a couple of neighbouring villas.
