This charming apartment is located in perfect tranquillity inside a converted ancient palace, where the environment has been impeccably refurbished whilst respecting the original structure. We love how much greenery surrounds this home, and how it can make you appreciate the simple things in life as you take a long walk through the flora, breathing in the fresh air and listening to the bird's chirp. The wooden beams definitely give this home the character it deserves, as do the shutters that can be opened to let in light as you gaze out over the trees of an ancient noble villa.
 
When you want to be a part of the city's hustle and bustle, take the sixteen-minute drive to Lucca and bike along the city walls, losing yourself in the history of what would've been, before indulging in some retail therapy in the Old Town. We recommend hiring a car here as there's plenty to do and see within a short drive. No matter where you choose to go, you'll find vibrant Italian culture to soak up (and so much good food). The home itself is located in the village of Sant’Andrea di Compito – a place known for its stunning Camellia trees dating back to the 1800s. We recommend wandering its streets and taking in the medieval charm.

Overlooking the waters of Porto Venere Harbour and just a flip-flop from a small beach, this traditional home is the perfect maritime retreat. You can watch all the nautical action unfold from your bougainvillea-clad balcony. Or take a ten-minute amble along the coast to the village’s history-rich centre – it’s been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site for good reason. While the coastal-themed interiors are charming, they will feel dated for some. The bedroom layouts are a little quirky, too, with the main bedroom sleeping three and the final single bed tucked away in the hallway. But we can let that slide for a home with such a one-of-a-kind setting.

Maritime Retreat

Located in the countryside just outside of Lucca, guests staying at this Tuscan villa are treated to views of the old town, rolling fields and the Mediterranean Sea in the distance. As you can imagine, it's a truly idyllic location and what's perhaps most impressive is that the home is just as easy on the eye, too.

The main portion of the home sits within a villa that dates back to the 15th century and you get a sense of this history with the high ceilings, large fireplaces and wooden beams. There's also a real sense of grandeur when it comes to the interior design — you only have to look at the chandeliers, artworks and lavish dining areas to see what we mean. This opulence can be witnessed in the pool house and suite house, as well.

Stepping outside, there are plenty of terraces, verandahs and lounges out on the lawns populated by olive trees and flowers where you can sit and admire the scenery. That being said, the views are equally as dreamy from the home's swimming pool, too.

When you can prise yourself away from this tranquil address, you can hop in the car and be wandering the historic streets of Lucca in a little over ten minutes, while the Italian coastline takes around thirty-five minutes to reach.

Reside at this sumptuous family villa perched on the edge of the breathtaking Ligurian coast. 

Fire up the barbie and enjoy alfresco dinners on the patio or strike a pose on the lounger as the kids splash about in the salt-water swimming pool. We loved throwing open the French doors and drinking in the views of the glittering coastline.

Although the home is dedicated to alfresco living, you'll find the interior just as pleasing – there are five bedrooms to choose from, each one decorated in a soothing palette of neutrals. The home is divided into two individual apartments allowing for privacy whichever way you want to cut it. At dusk, when the winds whip up from the sea, step inside and snuggle by the fireplace and watch on as twinkling stars come out to play.

A beach lover's paradise, there are three to choose from in the nearby vicinity. We adored the convenience of stepping from the manicured lawn to the short six-minute walk to Bagni La Rotondo Beach. If you can drag yourself away from this nautical playground, then Genoa, the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, is a twelve-minute car ride away.

Right in the centre of Lucca, this apartment's copious amounts of artwork and complementing furniture give it a distinct style. The large windows allow in plenty of sunlight – the perfect way to wake up, if you ask us – and the small kitchenette underneath the mezzanine is a nice spot to rustle up light bites. The stairs leading down from the bedroom lack a barrier on one side, meaning caution might be needed when using the bathroom at night. When it's time to explore, the iconic Torre Guingi is only a one-minute walk, and there are many authentic Tuscan eateries nearby.

If the Mad Hatter were to summer in Tuscany, we believe this is where he’d stay. Perched high above the beautiful medieval city of Lucca – just over two-miles drive away – this 17th century villa offers a plethora of charming dining areas and quaint living spaces. The interior benefits from eloquent floral furnishings, high vaulted ceilings with old renaissance arches and opulent touches. Lined by cypress trees, the pristine swimming pool really catches the eye, and a veranda covered patio area overlooking picturesque views of the Tuscan hills is truly special. Our favourite spot is hidden in a quiet little pocket around the back of the villa, where a charming woodland dining area can be found – with draping leafy oaks, glowing candle lanterns, and seating for the whole party. Set among rolling hills, a thirty-five-minute drive to the historic city of Lucca and twenty minutes to the alluring Viareggio coastline, this exceptional villa gazes out over the distant mountains. French doors flanked by green shutters and wide archways let the sunlight flood into every room, gently warming the pale terracotta-hued tiles. Farm life is not forgotten in this restoration – a country-style kitchen complete with rooster motif and copper pots invites you to spend an evening tending to traditional Tuscan cuisine, while beamed ceilings and a healthy dose of wood and wicker furniture ensure the natural world never feels far away. Our favourite spot is the rustic-chic terrace, with its impressive dining and chill-out areas setting the tone for the postcard-perfect garden. Out on the lawns, under ancient trees, lively mealtimes take on a movie-like quality, while the glittering turquoise pool is pure Hollywood glamour.

The interiors are as charming as you would expect – think carved fireplaces, wooden-beamed ceilings and traditional terracotta floors. Although there isn’t a swimming pool here, there are 50 hectares of grounds to explore and the sandy beaches of Lido di Camaiore are no more than a twenty-minute drive away.
