Farmhouse charm still radiates from this stone-built villa near Montemarcello village. A handful of shops and restaurants are a five-minute walk away and just outside the villa, a (very steep) path leads down to Punta Corvo's Beach. The colourful fishing villages of the Cinque Terre and within day-tripping distance too. In season, the private pool offers a place to cool off and you’ll find several outdoor lounges and dining spots in the shade around the quiet garden. Put the full kitchen through its paces by hiring a private chef. It’s a fairly higglety-pigglety layout, owing to the age of the building, and you’ll find three bedrooms in the main villa and a fourth bedroom in a separate garden apartment.

This fairy tale tower is the perfect place for a unique, romantic getaway. Located in picturesque Porto Venere, you’ll have four floors to yourselves here, including a roof terrace with sea views. The stone tower, which dates back to 1161, boasts a marble dining table – perfect for pasta for two – a Jacuzzi bathtub, and a wine cellar. To make your stay even more special, your host provides breakfast and can help arrange a variety of treats, such as a private chef to cook for you at home. The tower is a destination in itself, but if you can tear yourselves away, you’ll find a pretty harbour, Medieval buildings, and a viewpoint overlooking the Ligurian Sea nearby.

Overlooking the waters of Porto Venere Harbour and just a flip-flop from a small beach, this traditional home is the perfect maritime retreat. You can watch all the nautical action unfold from your bougainvillea-clad balcony. Or take a ten-minute amble along the coast to the village’s history-rich centre – it’s been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site for good reason. While the coastal-themed interiors are charming, they will feel dated for some. The bedroom layouts are a little quirky, too, with the main bedroom sleeping three and the final single bed tucked away in the hallway. But we can let that slide for a home with such a one-of-a-kind setting.

This modern villa enjoys a prime position, five minutes’ drive from the beaches of the Ligurian coast (Bocca di Magra is the closest). The famous Cinque Terre route is an ideal day trip, where colourful fishing villages dot the cliffs. This villa would suit those that don’t like a lot of clutter as it is sparsely furnished with the essentials for a holiday in the sun. It consists of a main villa with a large living room, fully-equipped kitchen and dining for the group, plus a separate dependence with its own small kitchen and living room. The highlight is the private pool with loungers and dining on the terrace as the Ligurian hills rise in the background.

Your host can help arrange guided tours, yacht cruises, and other experiences, too.

In the heart of Portovenere, this home's central location means you can drop your bags and stroll straight to the waterfront. Delicious Italian restaurants, historic landmarks, pebble beaches – whatever you fancy, exploring on foot is a breeze. It's certainly not the biggest apartment, but what it lacks in space it makes up for with the fantastic sea views from the balcony, stretching all the way to Palmaria Island – a must-visit while you're in town. Add in the ochre-hued, quintessentially Italian exterior and the other charming terraces, and you can see why it caught our eye.

Fantastic views and spots to enjoy the Italian warmth abound in this two-storey villa in Liguria. The open-plan living space catches the sun, though we'd prefer to spend our time outside here – with the alfresco dining area in a high-up spot, you get stunning views of the local area as you gulp down Italian cocktails, and the large pool speaks for itself. With the hilly terrain and winding roads, a car is essential here – the closest supermarkets and restaurants are a 7km drive. Further afield, you can head to picturesque Cinque Terre or even cross over into nearby Tuscany.

There's nothing like a private pool to get you into that holiday spirit and at this home in Marina di Pietrasanta, you'll also have the sandy beach just a short walk away. A charming seaside resort with plenty of restaurants and bars to enjoy, you'll have local parks to explore, numerous beaches to play on and surrounding villages to seek out – as well as the big attractions of Lucca (around forty minutes by car) and Pisa (around fifty).

Surrounded by a pretty garden, with high hedging for privacy and comfy outdoor seating spots, this home is a stylish choice for a family or small group of friends. Set in a quiet residential area, it's a dreamy escape from reality, with relaxing shades of white and grey, along with farmhouse styling. This charming apartment is located in perfect tranquillity inside a converted ancient palace, where the environment has been impeccably refurbished whilst respecting the original structure. We love how much greenery surrounds this home, and how it can make you appreciate the simple things in life as you take a long walk through the flora, breathing in the fresh air and listening to the bird's chirp. The wooden beams definitely give this home the character it deserves, as do the shutters that can be opened to let in light as you gaze out over the trees of an ancient noble villa.
 
When you want to be a part of the city's hustle and bustle, take the sixteen-minute drive to Lucca and bike along the city walls, losing yourself in the history of what would've been, before indulging in some retail therapy in the Old Town. Admire Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, a magnificent square constructed on the ruins of the ancient Roman amphitheatre that spreads a mix of historical beauty and true Italian flavour – stop for a bite to eat in the courtyard with innumerable cafes and restaurants.

We love the master suite with its fireplace – a welcome feature during the cooler months. We suggest a car for ease –  there are restaurants less than 2km away and the pretty town of Montecatini is 15km from the home.

A sixteenth-century villa in the hilly outskirts of Florence that, at times, has been both a stables and a nightclub, Thermae is one of the most spectacular places we’ve seen in Italy. Its restoration has been a labour of love for the host, Giovanni, and the way that he’s incorporated technology into the original structure is simply impressive. There’s too much to describe here, but know that everything's been taken care of. And if we did have to choose one thing that stood out, it might have to be the pool, hidden away in the vaults, and only accessible through a trapdoor.

Gazing out across the Mediterranean, this home places you in Porto Venere – recognised by the New York Times as one of the world's most beautiful spots. The large, south-facing windows really heat up the home, especially in summer – and with no air conditioning, you might find yourself spending more time on the balcony, enjoying cocktails as you look out across the sea. With ferries regularly departing between April and October, the Cinque Terre area is easily accessible here – though with a gorgeous beach just outside your front door, we wouldn't blame you for spending the lion's share of your time closer to home.

Set on an estate dotted with trees, shrubs, and other native foliage, this home ecompasses the entire first floor of an ancient villa in Orentano. Despite sharing things like the pool, tennis court, and soccer field with another home, there is enough room on the property for it to still feel private. That’s probably helped along by the fact that you have your own private garden and barbecue – not to mention the sheer size of the home itself. Move easily between rooms and use the easy go-between as an excuse to nip into the kitchen for another cup of coffee and a dozen more biscotti to take back to where you’re reading on the plush sofa. Take the spiral staircase up to the loft where you’ll find the rustic bedrooms and bathrooms for when you’re ready to turn in at night. When you think loft, you might conjure up images of a tight squeeze, but the addition of the skylights in almost every room here allows the light to make the space feel more open. 

With the host and his family living on the estate, you’ll sometimes find yourself around the table enjoying their homemade pasta alfresco with soft music playing in the background. There’s also a brick pizza oven here, so don’t be surprised if you eat more margarita than you’d care to – we know, that is not even remotely possible. 

When you’re not enjoying the home, you can make a trip to Pisa, Voltera, or Florence – each with their unique charm – or borrow the bicycles and simply explore the surroundings on two wheels instead of four. After a day of activity under the Tuscan sun, take a late-night swim in the heated pool, and when you’re ready to return inside, why not linger a little while longer to gaze up at the stars.

Perched on a hilltop above Santa Margherita Ligure, this villa puts you on the route of the Cinque Terre – five towns that cluster rainbow-bright around coves and harbours. It’s a six-minute walk into the charming town centre for meals on the waterfront, just remember it’s a steep walk back up the hill. But the views are worth it – gaze out over the rooftops and shimmering sea from the sprawling terrace. It’s all about dining, reclining and unwinding in the pool or hot tub out here. Two kitchens (one indoors and one covered outdoors) will keep the chef of the group happy and sliding open the glass doors blends the terrace with the huge, open living room.

This villa is nestled on the hills above the picturesque town of Pietrasanta, between the beautiful sandy beaches of Spiaggia Libera, and the adventure-filled mountains of the Apuan Alps. 

Inside, you’ll find a warm and welcoming home-from-home – characterful interiors such as stucco walls and exposed beam ceilings are expertly blended with all the necessary mod cons for easy everyday living. The grand dining room invites you to spend the evening sipping Prosecco and playing board games with loved ones, while the lounge has a fireplace to make nights in extra cosy.

Fit for royalty, this beautiful home sits in an estate once owned by Elisa Bonaparte, the former princess of Lucca and sister of Napoleon. It boasts panoramic views of the Tuscan countryside and a lush garden. You’ll have a pool with a Jacuzzi corner to unwind in, and if you fancy stretching your legs, you can set off on walking trails amid the vineyards. We love the Tuscan charm of the villa, with its beamed ceilings and terracotta floors – though there are plenty of modern amenities to ensure that your stay is a comfortable one, including a sauna. 


The Royal Estate

Already built by the 17th century, according to the Medici maps drawn up then, this medieval borghi might even be decades older. Though we're unsure of its age, there's no doubt of its beauty. The interior with exposed beams and brick is what you'd expect from an older home, but the traditional style might feel dated to some. Still, it's comfortable and charming, giving way to a sweeping garden. Kids will love the opportunity to run around on the lush green grass whilst adults take advantage of the sun loungers, poolside and terrace seating. Our favourite is the dining table under the vine-covered pergola. You'll find the renowned spas of Casciana Terme or Monsummano Terme minutes away.

Tuscan Essence

Deep within the green Ligurian hills behind the famous Cinque Terre (a 35-kilometre drive away), this villa offers an escape from it all. After exploring the surrounding scenery by bike or on foot, you can kick back by the poolside, play games on vast lawns or gather for alfresco feasts on the covered barbecue terrace. This place consists of two separate villas, each with its own open kitchen, living and dining room for social evenings together. The traditional feel of some of the furnishings and bathrooms won’t be for everyone, but the vast, manicured space outside makes up for it. 

Enchanting Bliss

Boasting stunning views of the town's historic rooftops and medieval towers, this two-level apartment is the ideal Lucca retreat. It’s light and airy with lots of character features, but we should probably mention that the bathroom is a bit dated. And although there’s a lift here there’s still a flight of stairs to climb. We’re sure you’ll love the location here. It’s situated between the vibrant Piazza San Michele and the Via Fillungo, so you’ll have plenty of boutiques and restaurants on your doorstep.

With its sauna, steam room and private pool, this villa on the Ligurian Coast has relaxation at its forefront. The covered terrace encourages time spent together with a round of refreshments, and inside, three living areas and two kitchens provide plenty of space for the whole group to comfortably spread out. If exploring is on the itinerary, take advantage of the bicycles provided by your host or stretch your legs with a wander down to Milano Beach. We recommend hiring a car for trips further afield – the town of Massa is a twenty-minute drive away.

Making full use of its elevated hillside position, this villa is built tall across three floors and two levels of terraces. Windows line the walls that face out across the wide-open plains of Versilia with its patchwork of sparkling lakes, woodlands and terracotta-tiled towns. Nearby wooded hillsides lead your eye out to the distant mountains rising beyond. Whether you’re swimming in the infinity pool, lounging on the outdoor sofas or gazing out of the panoramic windows, this mesmerising view greets you from all angles. Inside, you’ll find bright and breezy living areas with a feminine feel – think floats of white chiffon, expanses of champagne marble, and white linen curtains fluttering in the breeze. Gardens and patio areas surround the villa, with discreet hedge screens making it feel private despite its neighbours. The large heated whirlpool hot tub is elevated above the swimming pool and backed by a lounge area – perfect for socialising with your whole group. Planted with roses and Mediterranean herbs, the garden's scents combine with the views to stir up all the senses.

Or enjoy a candlelit supper of acquacotta, surrounded by lush greenery and twinkling lights – we adore the outside space here. Inside, there are character features aplenty, thanks to its farmhouse heritage. Think wooden beams, terracotta floor tiles and a large elegant fireplace. Another highlight is the bedroom, with its large painting and views over the Tuscan countryside.

Lucca and its many attractions, such as the Guinigi Tower and the Puccini Museum, are a few miles away. Or the village of Tofori is nearby, while if you like gardens, the Giardino di Villa Garzoni is a must-see.

This rustic yet refined farmhouse surrounded by Tuscan countryside makes for a restful stay indeed. The interiors are as charming as you would expect – think carved fireplaces, wooden-beamed ceilings and traditional terracotta floors. Outside, the furnished terrace is the perfect place to soak up the sunshine with a glass of wine in hand. Although there isn’t a swimming pool here, there are 50 hectares of grounds to explore and the sandy beaches of Lido di Camaiore are no more than a twenty-minute drive away.

This dreamy Tuscan home is special. It boasts original details dating back to the 17th century, with a traditional farmhouse aesthetic blended with modern features – and views to die for. The terrace runs along the front of the house, offering various charming spots for sunbathing, dining alfresco, and splashing about in the petite private pool. We adore the authentic Tuscan feel here, with its stone walls, lush greenery, and beams inside. There’s a rustic elegance that makes this villa memorable for all the right reasons.

Practically the subject of an entire film genre, restoring a farmhouse in Tuscany’s countryside is the stuff of fantasies – only here, someone else has done the job for you and you get to kick back and enjoy the fruits of their labour. Set among rolling hills, a thirty-five-minute drive to the historic city of Lucca and twenty minutes to the alluring Viareggio coastline, this exceptional villa gazes out over the distant mountains. French doors flanked by green shutters and wide archways let the sunlight flood into every room, gently warming the pale terracotta-hued tiles. Farm life is not forgotten in this restoration – a country-style kitchen complete with rooster motif and copper pots invites you to spend an evening tending to traditional Tuscan cuisine, while beamed ceilings and a healthy dose of wood and wicker furniture ensure the natural world never feels far away. Our favourite spot is the rustic-chic terrace, with its impressive dining and chill-out areas setting the tone for the postcard-perfect garden. Out on the lawns, under ancient trees, lively mealtimes take on a movie-like quality, while the glittering turquoise pool is pure Hollywood glamour.

You’ll share the grounds and outdoor pool with four villas, but there’s plenty of space. Stunning views can be admired from almost every angle here, with far-reaching vistas of the surrounding hills and forests. The apartment is rustic in style, with exposed stone walls and terracotta floor tiles. It’s the perfect retreat for a romantic getaway.

This farmhouse villa is an ideal base for exploring some gorgeous Tuscan cities and towns. Made up of a main house and a hayloft with its own living room and kitchen, there's plenty of space for a family or group of friends to stretch out. We think a couple of areas could do with a touch-up, especially in the hayloft, but the views over the Compitese hills from the private pool are lovely. You'll want a car for exploring, and there's no shortage of hot spots like Lucca, Pisa, and Florence nearby.
