That said, it’s worth noting that as a party of four, two people will sleep on the sofa bed in the living room. The owners have poured their heart and soul into a sympathetic restoration that makes a deliberate feature of some of the more patinated interior elements. In particular, double-height, frescoed ceilings draw the eye upward in the spacious and comfortable living room with beautiful mouldings on the walls and its two gorgeous bedrooms – undoubtedly the home's standout rooms.

The city of Como is a fantastic place to base yourself to explore some of the small lakeside settlements. It boasts a vibrant atmosphere, outstanding eateries and bougie boutiques, all within a stone's throw of your front door. Stroll a short distance to the harbour, where local ferries depart for the likes of Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio. In addition, active types might want to head into the mountains for scenic hikes, where each turn reveals ever more spectacular views.

With its Cubist-inspired interiors and signature furniture pieces, this home could be plucked straight from the pages of an interiors glossy. It's an impressive space, with green views of the mountains from the small but charming balcony. The only slight let down is the double sofa bed in the second bedroom – fine for a short stay, but it won't suit everyone. However, the two separate bathrooms and desk will be handy, as will the private garage parking should you plan to drive. Not that you'll need to. The Old Town, bustling with bakeries, cafes and restaurants, is just a stroll away.

Lake Como has become something of a celebrity hotspot, and we can't blame them – there’s no place we'd rather be for a relaxed escape. While a little less humble than Madonna's lakeside villa, you can get a slice of the star's lifestyle by staying in this renovated top-floor apartment, with a terrace overlooking the terracotta rooftops of Como city. A romantic spot, with its grey and white scheme, chandeliers and opulent queen-size bed, it makes the perfect northern Italian break for two. It's within easy reach of lakeside restaurants, walking routes and boat trips. Thick stone walls keep it warm in winter and cool in summer, but there’s also air conditioning, so you can always escape the midday heat. Should you ever need a little more action, it’s just an hour’s drive to Milan’s main airports and into the city itself, for shopping, restaurants and unmissable sights like the Duomo.

There are plenty of wine bars and restaurants in the adjoining square and the surrounding streets, but perhaps the most important thing to note is that the southern bank of Lake Como can be reached in barely a minute's walk. Just note – as a party of five, two people will draw the short straw and sleep on the sofa bed in the living room. Still, it’s a sacrifice we’d be willing to make for this pad’s enviable location. If the views tempt you out for a meander, you’ll find Como at your feet just waiting to be explored.

Comprising two apartments, on the second and third floors of the building, this home is ideal for two families looking to travel together comfortably. Each apartment has a kitchen and living space, so you’ll have plenty of room for downtime. Depart on boat tours of Lake Como from just 350 metres away, and explore nearby towns and cities – San Giovanni train station is just 600 metres away. There are restaurants and bars close by, making this a practical choice.

This apartment is New-York-style loft living in the centre of Como. It’s brimming with inspiration for creative types, from the picturesque surroundings of Lake Como (easily explored by water taxi) to the architecturally marvellous interior. The open bathroom won’t be for everyone – with a huge rainfall shower in the centre of the open loft and a spa-like bath enclosed. But there’s a standard shower room with a door for those who prefer privacy. It feels like an old warehouse in the vast, open living space with a sleek chrome kitchen, banquet-sized dining table and desks to work remotely. Art and books take centre stage, strewn about the room with a TV on the floor like an afterthought. 

A Composition in Concrete

If you’re visiting as a group, these two self-contained apartments make for an idyllic spot in Como. There’s plenty of space for your cohort, including two handy sofa beds to accommodate up to four guests – perfect if you’re visiting with children. And while you can enjoy the privacy of these two spaces, the living spaces are great for coming together to share dinners after days on Lake Como. While the patio is on the small side, and the views only look out onto the courtyard, it’s a nice spot to sip a glass of wine at the end of the day.

There’s a kitchenette for whipping up quick snacks, but if you’ve got a hankering for hearty Lombardy fare, you’re only footsteps from traditional osterie. 

Spend afternoons navigating Como’s narrow cobbled streets, nipping in and out of artisanal boutiques before finding a spot by the water with an aperitvo. If you’re keen to explore further afield, catch the ferry to Bellagio – it’ll take around forty-four minutes – and stroll around the peaceful Villa Melzi gardens.

You couldn't dream up a better location for this sophisticated apartment perched right in the heart of Como's ancient streets and just a stroll away from the lakeside for aperitivo cocktails and people-watching. The living area and small balcony for two will feel snug if four of you are sharing, and there's not much of a view other than a glimpse of the neighbouring neoclassical facades. But we can let that slide for the rest of the home's sleek interiors and Juliet balcony windows which flood the space with natural light.

A Taste of Italy

This apartment in Como is a ten-minute stroll from the lake. Exploring here is easy – shops and restaurants are nearby, as is the ferry for excursions further afield. Want to sightsee in style? Your host is happy to arrange classic car hire, boat charters, and other fun experiences to make your getaway extra special. It isn't the biggest apartment, especially with two guests sharing a sofa bed. The kitchen is also compact and lacks an oven. However, the bedroom has a desk and plenty of storage space, and the location is top-notch. We think it's a good choice for couples or small families who enjoy spending their days out and about.

Situated just a stone's throw away from beautiful Lake Como, this apartment is ideal for a relaxing break. We love the barrel-vaulted ceilings here and there’s a side view of the lake and a bright living room which sleeps guests three and four on a sofa bed. The location is great for strolls along the shore and the funicular to the village of Brunate is nearby, making exploring easy. This home is also very close to the centre of Como with its shops, restaurants, and landmarks.

This second-floor apartment is within walking distance of Lake Como and its surrounding shops and nightlife. The Juliet balcony offers views of the Basilica of San Fedele and the Duomo's dome, and while the location is central, you'll find it doesn't get too loud. The home's layout over multiple floors means everyone will have plenty of space, but some rooms don't get much natural light. And while you won't find free parking here, you won't need a car to make the most of your stay.

Situated in the heart of Como, the apartment is within walking distance of shops, restaurants, and, most importantly, the lake. There's no better place to see the sights, though with on-site parking, you can explore further afield with ease. As far as design goes, the apartment is contemporary and practical. It lacks some homey touches, but it boasts all the essentials. We're big fans of the small balcony, too. Just note that two guests will sleep on a sofa bed in the living area.

This bright and sleek apartment is situated in the lovely city of Como and is only a short walk away from a glistening lake that includes a contemporary sculpture named Life Electric that's dedicated to the inventor of the electric battery, Alessandro Volta – a great spot for those holiday snaps. The central location means you’ll be a few steps from Porta Torre, a five-minute walk to the busy city centre and twelve minutes to the picture-perfect shores of Lake Como. Plus, the apartment itself is on the doorstep of the triweekly Como market – it’s animated by day, but a quiet spot at night, so you can pull down the blackout blinds and dream in black and white.

When you stay at this lovely apartment, you can go for a stroll after breakfast along the shores of Lake Como – it's just a short walk away. There are a number of eateries nearby, too, or dine on your balcony overlooking the street below. We love that the living room and bedroom also open onto the terrace. There are only two chairs at the alfresco dining table, though, so if you're a group of four, there won't be enough room for everyone. Also, at full capacity, two guests will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the living space, making the area quite cramped.
