What was once an abandoned farmhouse has been sensitively restored to reflect the bountiful Marche countryside, honouring its traditional characteristics while adding a flair of modernity. Inside, terracotta tiles and wooden beamed ceilings blend harmoniously with chic, minimalist furniture and a modern, farmhouse-style kitchen. 

The interior is beautiful, but we imagine you’ll be spending most of your time making the most of the outdoors. Especially when considering the outdoor kitchen, fully equipped for trying your hand at local dishes. Spend days lounging by the saltwater pool, taking a dip to cool off, while soaking in the rural surroundings. And spend evenings beneath the pergola, white curtains gently swaying in the wind, tucking into a fresh barbecue dinner around the dining table. The views at this Umbrian home are truly spectacular. The villa stands in vast private grounds just a ten-minute drive from the hilltop town of Montone, looking out over the hills and valleys of the Umbrian countryside. It’s a secluded retreat, but still within easy access to all that Umbria has to offer. The villa is rustic, with a simple and comfortable decor – expect cotto floors, beamed ceilings and exposed original stonework, plus a few antiques. The gardens have been designed to make the most of the wraparound views, so you’ll find many a terrace and quiet corner to enjoy. We love the fig tree by the pool – time your visit right and you can pick sun-warmed fruit straight from the tree for breakfast. 

Drink in the Serenity

Painted in a cheery bright yellow, we think this villa in the Ancona region will have you smiling before you’ve even unloaded the car. Lovingly restored, the house has been renovated in a traditional style that pays homage to its humble start as a farmhouse while showcasing the many great attributes it now holds. Spread over three floors, the home also has two separate apartments - one with a double bedroom and living space on the ground floor which can be accessed from both the main building and the dining terrace, and a small second apartment on the top floor with a sofa, two beds and a kitchenette. As vibrantly decorated inside as it is outside, there’s a rustic, cosy feel to this home that we just love with its antique furniture, bright washes of colour on the walls and exposed ceiling beams that create a warm atmosphere to feel right at home in. But it’s the outside where this sunny villa really shines - with several hundred square metres of land surrounding the villa, you’re treated to not only a beautiful, uninterrupted view of Le Marche countryside but also to a well-cared for, mature garden that features lavender, lilac, pink hydrangeas, oleander, roses, and fruit trees of all kinds. Needless to say, there’s plenty of space to spread out here as well as all sorts of peaceful spots to take a nap, read a book or enjoy an evening aperitivo. And the pool not only boasts some of the best views on the grounds but is large enough to host a whole family of novelty inflatables and is surrounded by a generous number of sun loungers so no one has to wait their turn to top of their tan.

The accommodation, set over three floors, is split between the main house and an annexe which has two more bedrooms and and a kitchen area. Another highlight is the location – it’s only 12 kilometres from the historical centre of Todi, with its medieval buildings, piazzas, palaces and Roman relics.

Head out to explore more of Assisi and tuck into some authentic Italian meals – maybe with a lush glass of red if that tickles your fancy. Get your feet moving at the Via di Francesco hiking area – we absolutely love the view that you get from this spot. 

Return home to relax on the terrace to watch the sunset behind the flurry of trees, with a novel on your lap. Avid readers will thrive at this home, and may even find some hidden gems on the bookshelf.

Two guests will share a sofa bed on the mezzanine, though – since privacy is limited, we think it's best for kids. Location-wise, you're just a short drive from the small medieval town of Gualdo Cattaneo, while Todi, Perugia and Assisi are all excellent options for day trips.

Then, when you think it can’t get any better than the open-plan living area, head upstairs to the well-appointed mezzanine and while away the afternoon in your private reading nook. It doesn’t get much better than that. 

Of course, it wouldn’t be an Italian getaway without a spot of sunbathing and this home has got plenty of outdoor space for fulfilling that very purpose. Slip into your swimming costume and go for a dip in the private pool, fire up the grill and dine alfresco on your favourite Italian dishes, or simply sit back and relax, letting the glorious ocean vistas wash over you as you sip a glass of the region’s best wine. Indoors, there's plenty of character to admire – the home was built in 1616, after all. Our favourite spot is the conservatory-style lounge, with its large windows showing off the scenery. Two bedrooms are located in a separate annexe, making it ideal for those wanting a bit more space and privacy. As for location, you'll be based near the medieval village of Monte Castello di Vibio and within easy driving distance of Todi, Perugia, and Orvieto.

If you’re after a local taste of Italy, the town of Umbertide is only 16k away and has charming restaurants and piazzas. If you crave a bit more action, the city of Perugia is within driving distance.

Built on the ruins of a mediaeval watchtower, this charming villa offers a true escape from it all. Inside, you’ll find a homely space, and the double bunkbed room is ideal for families. But, the outdoor space is the star of the show for us. A private heated pool, sun-drenched terraces, alfresco dining opportunities and far-reaching views – there’s so much to love here. If you can tear yourself away, hop in the car for a trip to Perugia, where cobbled streets and authentic Italian eateries await.

Made up of the main villa and a separate apartment, it’s an ideal choice for large groups of extended family or friends who seek a sociable getaway together yet still enjoy some private time. When you’re ready to explore, you can take to the fairways of the local golf course or drive to Perugia where shops, eateries, and historic landmarks await.

Even though this charming villa sits out in the Umbrian countryside, you can see the medieval fortress of Asissi from the terrace. The winding streets packed with cafés, restaurants and ancient sights are just a five-minute drive away, yet your secluded abode is surrounded by fields and hills for peace and quiet. Plus, there's a traditional osteria serving Umbrian cuisine on the edge of the forest, just 1km from the villa – four bicycles are provided to get around. 

Within the grounds, you’ve got a sparkling swimming pool on the hillside, overlooking the valley below. While away the days floating on the lilo and drying off on the comfy, beanbag-style loungers. To the side of the house, you’ll find a wooden pergola with greenery creeping up the woodwork where alfresco dining comes courtesy of a wood-fired oven. 

Alternatively, you could opt to cook meals in the sleek, modern kitchen inside and dine in the open-plan living area, surrounded by modern artworks. Bold, textured paintings sit on gallery-white walls and striking sculptures populate the corners of rooms. Perhaps the greatest image, though, is the view of hilltop Asissi from the sliding glass doors in the plush living room. 

Saint Francis

This palatial Umbrian villa sits on a 140-acre wine estate amid beautiful countryside. There are hiking and cycling trails through the surrounding vineyards, making this an excellent base for outdoorsy travellers. Orvieto, with its winding medieval streets and Gothic cathedral, is just fifteen minutes away, perfect for a day-trip or a meal out. The villa is traditional, with beamed ceilings and terracotta-tiled floors. A grand feature staircase leads from the open-plan living space to the bedrooms, which are comfortable enough to rival a hotel’s. Outside, you'll have a private pool and a barbecue for alfresco dining in stunning surrounds.

Dating back to the 14th century, this farmhouse has an adjoining church which was once the parish of the estate, so it’s steeped in history. Inside, there are plenty of areas to relax and the elegant decor compliments the character features. Another total highlight is the beautiful vistas of the valley from the garden, terraces and the private heated swimming pool and Jacuzzi. You may feel like staying put in this magical home, but if you want to explore, then Perugia, with its medieval Priori Palace and Gothic cathedral is within driving distance.
