Originally a castle with an adjoining 11th-century church adorned with frescoes, this grand home is perfect for weddings and special celebrations. Set on a renowned estate, there are stunning views of the Umbrian hills and vineyards from the gardens, alfresco dining areas and the heated infinity pool. The main house sleeps six guests, while on the other side of the garden, there’s an annexe which sleeps eight people – all bedrooms have a marble en-suite. When you want to explore, long walks can be enjoyed around the estate’s communal grounds home, to olive groves and river valleys or visit the fascinating city of Perugia.

A watchtower has existed on this very spot for almost 1,000 years, standing sentry over the spectacular Umbrian countryside. Built from stone recovered from the original structure, this home was lovingly reconstructed from the ground up, with the watchful eye of the Fine Arts Institute ensuring a faithful recreation of the original. Work was completed back in 2005, so the four-storey tower comes complete with all the conveniences you'd expect of a modern home, enriched by architectural flourishes, antique furniture and elegant tapestries that bring a certain charm to your stay.

Sitting at the centre of 6 hectares, wander the flower-filled gardens, pass through the ancient olive grove, and uncover a stunning saltwater pool surrounded by all manner of sun-soaked seating options, plus a trampoline to entertain the children. This is also where you'll find a modern annexe. Fully self-contained – complete with a full kitchen, light-filled living area, shower room and bedroom – it makes for a perfect couple's retreat or a step-free escape for older members of the family.

The purpose of any stay here should be to maximise the time you spend within the home. However, if you find yourself with an urge to explore, the Solfagnano Castle is within walking distance, while the pristine medieval centre of Perugia is just 20km away.

Like something from a fairytale, this castle truly is one-of-a-kind, and there are few places we'd rather be nestled in a medieval castle than in Umbria, the very heart of Italy. With surprisingly bright, airy spaces, luxurious furnishings, and a sense of the utmost love and care that has gone into this home, it really is difficult not to fall utterly in love with this home. The host has managed to celebrate the castle's fourteenth-century heritage with its mix of modern and traditional interiors. On top of that, there's a huge kitchen and several alfresco dining options, making this a great choice for those that like to indulge in Italy's exquisite cuisine, while the private pool, play area, games room, and extensive grounds are sure to keep guests of any age entertained the whole way through.

Set nine kilometres from the lakeside town of Passignano sul Trasimeno, you'll need a car to get around as there's not much within walking distance. But the trade-off? Peaceful seclusion and privacy.
