This villa is a dreamy destination for an idyllic holiday on the Italian Riviera. This home has a particularly impressive location. It's nestled within not one, but two UNESCO World Heritage sites – the Vineyard Landscape of Piedmont and the Sacred Mountains of Piedmont and Lombardy. And, with 17 hectares of land surrounding the house, and several rare white truffle trees, there's no denying this is a special spot. 

Much of the house dates back to the 19th century, with an even older Medieval section inside, and there's a sense of history in every corner. However, that's not to say that it's old-fashioned – the host has carefully selected a fresh colour scheme and provided plenty of modern conveniences to enjoy. Fire up the coffee machine and sip your morning espresso on the balcony, before grabbing your book and picking a sun lounger to catch some rays. When the temperature rises, simply slip into the swimming pool and float under the blue sky, or head for some shade under the portico. 

Walkers will be delighted with the range of hiking trails throughout this region, which guarantee incredible views of the luscious landscape. Wine lovers are also well catered for, with several nearby vineyards where you can try the local vintages. There are several charming villages within driving distance, and if you're visiting during the right time of year then you might have the chance to join one of the region's most unique traditions – a truffle hunt.

This home caught our eye for its sea views across the Gulf of Tigullio. And even when you’re indoors, you can still enjoy the water vistas from the living area and some of the bedrooms. We love the outdoor space here, which is well set up for lazy days by the pool and alfresco dining. Hikers will be pleased to hear that there are coastal walks aplenty nearby, and for days at the beach, you’ll find a choice of seaside towns within driving distance. We think this home provides the perfect backdrop for a peaceful getaway with family or friends.

Perched on a hilltop above Santa Margherita Ligure, this villa puts you on the route of the Cinque Terre – five towns that cluster rainbow-bright around coves and harbours. What this home may lack in style, it makes up for in location. Nestled in the hills of Moneglia, it commands views across the bay and is well-connected by train to Genoa and the coastal villages of the Cinque Terre. Admire the views from a lounger on the terrace, or head down to the pool, which stays relatively shady and cool thanks to the surrounding trees. The furnishings are a little dated, but at least there are sea views in the upper bedrooms, while the large sliding glass doors mean you're never far away from a sunny seat. Plus, the glass dining table comfortably seats your entire group, so you can also enjoy meals together – that's if you don't wander into Moneglia to try one of the restaurants on the palm-tree-lined streets.

This large villa is the perfect place to relax and enjoy your holiday with your family. The property has a swimming pool, a ping-pong table, a table soccer, a children's play area, a wood-burning pizza oven and a gas barbecue. The house has been renovated with a focus on sustainability, using only natural materials and products. It is located in the town of Monteu Roero, in the province of Cuneo, just 2 kilometers from the village, less than 20 kilometers from the towns of Alba and Bra, and 50 kilometers from Turin.

Although the home is dedicated to alfresco living, you'll find the interior just as pleasing – there are five bedrooms to choose from, each one decorated in a soothing palette of neutrals. The home is divided into two individual apartments allowing for privacy whichever way you want to cut it. At dusk, when the winds whip up from the sea, step inside and snuggle by the fireplace and watch on as twinkling stars come out to play.

A beach lover's paradise, there are three to choose from in the nearby vicinity. We adored the convenience of stepping from the manicured lawn to the short six-minute walk to Bagni La Rotondo Beach. If you can drag yourself away from this nautical playground, then Genoa, the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, is a twelve-minute car ride away.

In the exclusive Portofino peninsula, this villa is a ten-minute walk from the harbour's designer shops and seafood restaurants. You'll have private access to the sea on a small rocky platform, and the large terrace is shaded by century-old wisteria with space for alfresco dining. Some of the decor is a little dated and won't be to everyone's taste, but all the bedrooms have lovely sea views. Parking is limited, and although the sea is on your doorstep, it's worth noting that the nearest beach is best reached by public transport.

Lonesome Voyage

This grand old villa has all the charm of yesteryear, plus a swimming pool practically grazing the treetops. Between Turin and Milan, in the Piedmont countryside, the grounds are flanked by hills and surrounded by forest. You can enjoy a quiet, rural location yet it’s just a fifteen-minute drive into the centre of Asti, known as the City of 100 towers in its medieval heart. You'll find that there's an innate tranquillity to this home in the middle of the Piedmont countryside. How best to enjoy this peace and quiet? Well, the swimming pool will be the obvious choice during the warmer months, but there are plenty of equally pleasant spots out in the garden or under the pergola.

If the temperature ever takes a dip at any point, the table in the conservatory still gives you the opportunity to watch the world go by, while there's also an open-hearth fireplace to light up once the sun's gone down. This rather traditional source of warmth is in keeping with the home's rustic style, as seen with the exposed stonework and country-style kitchen.

Although you're more than welcome to never leave the address during your stay, the closest town, Vesime, takes five minutes to reach in the car and offers an outdoor swimming pool and a castle to explore. The city of Acqui Terme is half an hour's drive, too.

What The Heart Wants

It will be hard to tear yourself away from the sea views at this hillside villa. Separated into the main villa and an annexe, this home used to be a traditional farmhouse and has been lovingly restored with modern amenities while retaining charming features like the exposed wooden beams, stone fireplace, and the original majolica tiles. The villa's gardens extend down the hillside, bordered by Mediterranean plants and herbs, ending in a swimming pool with views over the town. Relax in the shade of a tree with a book, before enjoying lunch on the outdoor terrace. Each of the bedrooms catches the Mediterranean light with their whitewashed walls, and one of the rooms even features an original fireplace. If you don't fancy trying the antique 'runfò Genovesi' (Genoese oven), the kitchen also features a gas cooker, oven, dishwasher, and fridge, and there's a barbecue for a good old-fashioned grill night. Don't leave without trying some of Recco's most famous delicacy, focaccia col formaggio – a delicious focaccia with local cheese. End your day on the balcony, a glass of Italian wine in hand, as the sun sets over the coast.

This characterful loft is just a thirty-five-minute train ride from the centre of Milan, offering the ideal base for exploring the city. The home blends comfort and style, with a private outdoor space, a jacuzzi, and a sunken seating area that's perfect for chilled evenings with a drink in hand. A full kitchen, bar space, generous storage, and free parking make longer stays a breeze. At full capacity, two guests will sleep on the downstairs sofa bed. The single bedroom is fully private, while the mezzanine double is semi-open to the living space below. Some areas, particularly the bathrooms, do feel a little dated. But with its generous layout, peaceful setting, and easy access to the city, this stay is full of appeal.
