This home has a particularly impressive location. It's nestled within not one, but two UNESCO World Heritage sites – the Vineyard Landscape of Piedmont and the Sacred Mountains of Piedmont and Lombardy. And, with 17 hectares of land surrounding the house, and several rare white truffle trees, there's no denying this is a special spot. 

Much of the house dates back to the 19th century, with an even older Medieval section inside, and there's a sense of history in every corner. However, that's not to say that it's old-fashioned – the host has carefully selected a fresh colour scheme and provided plenty of modern conveniences to enjoy. Fire up the coffee machine and sip your morning espresso on the balcony, before grabbing your book and picking a sun lounger to catch some rays. When the temperature rises, simply slip into the swimming pool and float under the blue sky, or head for some shade under the portico. 

Walkers will be delighted with the range of hiking trails throughout this region, which guarantee incredible views of the luscious landscape. Wine lovers are also well catered for, with several nearby vineyards where you can try the local vintages. There are several charming villages within driving distance, and if you're visiting during the right time of year then you might have the chance to join one of the region's most unique traditions – a truffle hunt.

Recently renovated, the home is a brand new barn conversion with its own spacious garden, swimming pool and outdoor lounge areas. The barn was designed to transition with the changing seasons in mind, and so feels light and airy during the warm summer months, yet warm and cosy come winter. Light up the log fire burner in the humble living room when it's cold and open up the floor-to-ceiling windows to let the fresh air in when it's hot. The open-plan living area will ensure a sociable stay from the inside, while the large terrace with a dining table and chairs serve perfectly for those long summer evenings of dining alfresco. There is also a relaxing corner under the pergola, where you can lounge around come day or night – it's the perfect spot to find some shade or watch the sunset. With Turin just an hours drive away, you're secluded and out of the action at this retreat in Sanico, however, feel rest assured that you're not too far away from the city's sights should you wish to explore further afield.

Reside at this sumptuous family villa perched on the edge of the breathtaking Ligurian coast. 

Fire up the barbie and enjoy alfresco dinners on the patio or strike a pose on the lounger as the kids splash about in the salt-water swimming pool. We loved throwing open the French doors and drinking in the views of the glittering coastline.

Although the home is dedicated to alfresco living, you'll find the interior just as pleasing – there are five bedrooms to choose from, each one decorated in a soothing palette of neutrals. The home is divided into two individual apartments allowing for privacy whichever way you want to cut it. At dusk, when the winds whip up from the sea, step inside and snuggle by the fireplace and watch on as twinkling stars come out to play.

A beach lover's paradise, there are three to choose from in the nearby vicinity. We adored the convenience of stepping from the manicured lawn to the short six-minute walk to Bagni La Rotondo Beach. If you can drag yourself away from this nautical playground, then Genoa, the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, is a twelve-minute car ride away.

Scirocco Breeze

This large villa is the perfect place to relax and enjoy your holiday with your family. The property has a swimming pool, a ping-pong table, a table soccer, a children's play area, a wood-burning pizza oven and a gas barbecue. The house has been renovated with a focus on sustainability, using only natural materials and products. It is located in the town of Monteu Roero, in the province of Cuneo, just 2 kilometers from the village, less than 20 kilometers from the towns of Alba and Bra, and 50 kilometers from Turin.

Parking is limited, and although the sea is on your doorstep, it's worth noting that the nearest beach is best reached by public transport.

You'll find that there's an innate tranquillity to this home in the middle of the Piedmont countryside. How best to enjoy this peace and quiet? Well, the swimming pool will be the obvious choice during the warmer months, but there are plenty of equally pleasant spots out in the garden or under the pergola.

If the temperature ever takes a dip at any point, the table in the conservatory still gives you the opportunity to watch the world go by, while there's also an open-hearth fireplace to light up once the sun's gone down. This rather traditional source of warmth is in keeping with the home's rustic style, as seen with the exposed stonework and country-style kitchen.

Although you're more than welcome to never leave the address during your stay, the closest town, Vesime, takes five minutes to reach in the car and offers an outdoor swimming pool and a castle to explore. The city of Acqui Terme is half an hour's drive, too.

What The Heart Wants

Once belonging to a noble Piedmontese family, this 18th century villa is teeming with history while still feeling of the moment with its modern updates. With large, light-filled rooms and distinctive paned windows, we think you’ll be royally impressed by this traditional home’s interior. Full of cheery, bright colours, the rooms feel warm and full of sunlight, and fully stocked bookcases, an eclectic collection of artwork and antique furnishings will keep the eyes wandering over every nook and cranny. The sweet country-style kitchen with doors leading out to the front garden is a delight to cook and spend time in, and plush red sofas, a cosy fireplace and a huge glass-fronted bookcase will be a dream for any book lover. Outside, a covered veranda sets a picture-perfect scene for alfresco dining in the lush garden with a variety of plants and flowers and an inviting pool with Roman steps. Perfectly kept hedges keep the space feeling private and secluded, and the grounds stretching out over several hundred square metres is part of a landscape so beautiful it has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It will be hard to tear yourself away from the sea views at this hillside villa. Separated into the main villa and an annexe, this home used to be a traditional farmhouse and has been lovingly restored with modern amenities while retaining charming features like the exposed wooden beams, stone fireplace, and the original majolica tiles. The villa's gardens extend down the hillside, bordered by Mediterranean plants and herbs, ending in a swimming pool with views over the town. Relax in the shade of a tree with a book, before enjoying lunch on the outdoor terrace. Each of the bedrooms catches the Mediterranean light with their whitewashed walls, and one of the rooms even features an original fireplace. If you don't fancy trying the antique 'runfò Genovesi' (Genoese oven), the kitchen also features a gas cooker, oven, dishwasher, and fridge, and there's a barbecue for a good old-fashioned grill night. Don't leave without trying some of Recco's most famous delicacy, focaccia col formaggio – a delicious focaccia with local cheese. The property is detached and sits on top of a hill, offering beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Its private garden is well-maintained and features a wildlife garden, trees, courtyard, and a swimming pool (seasonal availability: May to October). The house has three levels and 10 rooms with comfortable furnishings, including an open kitchen, living/dining room with fireplace, four double bedrooms on the upper floor, and three double bedrooms on the top floor.
