This seventeenth-century palace by Lake Orta delivers the ultimate five-star experience. It underwent a total refurbishment recently and while the original architecture has been restored, luxurious finishes and modern comforts have been introduced in all its spaces. Expect open fireplaces, coffered ceilings, incredible original art and designer furniture throughout. Every bedroom and its en-suite are of an equally high standard so all guests are guaranteed a memorable stay. Other highlights include the heated indoor pool and spa, the library and music room, and you can't possibly miss the wonderful views across the lake from the top floor. Like the rest of the home, its courtyard garden is super private – perfect for romantic candlelit dinners, and you'll also find daybeds for catching some rays. While staying in the palace, a trip to the Sacro Monte di Orta is a must – this remarkable site is perched high on a hill and is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Just when we thought we'd unearthed the most charming home in tranquil Lake Orta, this little gem pops up to say ciao. Tucked away in the romantic hillsides fringing the lakeside, history is everywhere to see inside this home. Exposed beams, cool terracotta floors, shuttered windows, and a wooden balcony encasing it all bring the character. While elsewhere, this place speaks to a more contemporary audience with an effortlessly cool lounge (the canvas butterfly chairs are inspired) and a fully kitted-out kitchen with a coffee machine for obligatory morning expressos.

Upstairs, you'll find two light-filled and airy bedrooms with access to the balcony and a lakeside view you could savour forever. But on hot summer days, it's downstairs in that suntrap terrace where we think you'll be whiling away your days – if you have any downtime, that is. With the captivating medieval village of Orta San Giulio just a twenty-minute walk away, and a Nonna-style bistro and restaurant for an authentic taste of Northern Italian cuisine even closer (a ten-minute amble), we suspect you'll out and about a lot. And when it's time to up the ante with some fun on the water, the lake's lido, Spiaggia Miami, is just a six-minute drive away. As we're finickity, the downstairs living space feels a little bijou, but with that covered panoramic balcony outside, we don't think you'll mind. This apartment is part of a 15th-century estate and offers a taste of Italian tradition. It's set in Massimo Visconti, an easy drive from Stresa. We love the communal garden, with its sun-kissed terraces and all-important swimming pool. Although other guests have access to the pool and patios, we think the Lake Maggiore views make sharing worth the effort. It's no surprise the interior is old-world in every sense – we find the design charming but it won't suit everyone. Alongside the two-bedroom apartment, there's a small single room that could work well for guests wanting more privacy.

The owners have poured their heart and soul into a sympathetic restoration that makes a deliberate feature of some of the more patinated interior elements. In particular, double-height, frescoed ceilings draw the eye upward in the spacious and comfortable living room with beautiful mouldings on the walls and its two gorgeous bedrooms – undoubtedly the home's standout rooms.

The city of Como is a fantastic place to base yourself to explore some of the small lakeside settlements. It boasts a vibrant atmosphere, outstanding eateries and bougie boutiques, all within a stone's throw of your front door. Stroll a short distance to the harbour, where local ferries depart for the likes of Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio. In addition, active types might want to head into the mountains for scenic hikes, where each turn reveals ever more spectacular views.

This stylish little apartment has everything you need for a break by the lake in Lugano. A studio space, it’s ideal for a couple or solo traveller looking for a stylish bolthole in one of Switzerland’s prettiest towns. Stroll twenty minutes to reach the lake, sparking and inviting you for a dip in the summer months. Twenty-five minutes sees you at the pavement cafés and bars of Piazza della Riforma for aperitivo (this is a Swiss-Italian town). 

Back at the apartment building, head to the shared gym for a workout session, or perhaps catch up on work in one of the communal working spaces. Then retreat to the privacy of your apartment where a kitchenette provides the basics if you’re not dining out. Stone floors and a pistachio-green feature wall keep things characterful. This contemporary apartment is located in Via Tommaso Grossi in Como, offering panoramic views of the city and lake from the communal rooftop terrace. We love the sleek interiors of this home, which provides a comfortable stay for a family or group of friends. Just note – as a party of five, two people will draw the short straw and sleep on the sofa bed in the living room. Still, it’s a sacrifice we’d be willing to make for this pad’s enviable location. If the views tempt you out for a meander, you’ll find Como at your feet just waiting to be explored.
