We were sold on those views of Lake Maggiore alone – and that was before we'd even clapped eyes on the panoramic sunny terrace and newly refurbished interiors of this townhouse. As we're finickity, the downstairs living space feels a little bijou, but with that covered panoramic balcony outside, we don't think you'll mind. And kids will love the novelty of the top-floor mezzanine bedroom with a TV den to spill out into. Perched amidst the hillsides, 700 metres above the lake, you're quietly removed from the bustle. But when it's time to dip your toes into lakeside living, Stresa's grand promenades and history-rich streets bustling with trattorias are just a five-minute drive away.

This apartment is part of a 15th-century estate and offers a taste of Italian tradition. It's set in Massimo Visconti, an easy drive from Stresa. We love the communal garden, with its sun-kissed terraces and all-important swimming pool. Although other guests have access to the pool and patios, we think the Lake Maggiore views make sharing worth the effort. It's no surprise the interior is old-world in every sense – we find the design charming but it won't suit everyone. Alongside the two-bedroom apartment, there's a small single room that could work well for guests wanting more privacy.

This is a cozy two-room apartment located in the picturesque town of Cunardo. Nestled in a quiet yet central location, this delightful holiday rental offers the perfect base for exploring the surrounding cities of Varese and Lugano. Steeped in history, this apartment was once the village apothecary's shop in the 19th century. It features a bright and cool ground floor layout, consisting of a bathroom, double bedroom, and an eat-in kitchen that overlooks the internal courtyard. Modern, bright and beautiful as it is, nothing's going to beat the outdoor area here. With ample seating, including an alfresco dining table under a flowering pergola, looking out over the glistening lake, you can see why this one made our collection. We also like the bathtub facing the door so you can even admire the views from inside. Because of the perched location of this home, you'll have to climb steps up to it, but it'll all be worth it for the breathtaking panorama of Lake Como. This contemporary home was designed by a creative architect and features a large terrace stretching around half the apartment. Your host can provide free baby equipment and pets are welcome, making it an ideal choice for families. While there is the potential for some noise from other residents of the building, you'll have space to sit outside with an alfresco meal or drink and look out toward the glittering Lake Lugano. We think you'll want a car here for getting the most out of your stay, whether it's exploring the shops and fantastic restaurants or parking up and taking a scenic walk by the water.

But, the cherry on top for us is the location. Mere steps from the Duomo and the tranquil shores of Lake Como, ticking off the city’s hotspots is easy here.

Arrive in style at this lakeside property on board a resplendent Riva speedboat, thanks to its private jetty. Disembark and step inside to discover a spacious and stylish open-plan living area and kitchen, kitted out with all the culinary accoutrements you might need to whip up delicious homemade meals, just like nonna used to make.

From the living room, not only will you enjoy access to a private balcony through two sets of French doors, but also awe-inspiring panoramic views capable of bringing a tear to the eye. The soothing atmosphere of the bedrooms will help you relax after your journey, while there's a good amount of storage space so you can unpack and settle in. The main bedroom even finds room for a desk and enjoys access to an en-suite shower room.

When you're not sunbathing and swimming in the lake, explore the surrounding village of Laglio. With slopes full of vineyards and olive groves, and pastel-coloured villas, it's one of the most elegant lakeside locations. But don't take our word for it. We love the sleek interiors of this home, which provides a comfortable stay for a family or group of friends. Just note – as a party of five, two people will draw the short straw and sleep on the sofa bed in the living room. Still, it’s a sacrifice we’d be willing to make for this pad’s enviable location. If the views tempt you out for a meander, you’ll find Como at your feet just waiting to be explored.

A perfect base for exploring Lake Maggiore and the mountains, this apartment in Maccagno is tucked away on the quiet edge of town. With all the comforts of home, it's set inside a pretty period building on a cobbled pedestrian street. Ideal for lovers of outdoor sports, from here you can head off on hiking or cycling adventures in the mountains or stroll to the lake for a spot of sailing or windsurfing.

Inside, it's a blend of period features like tall ceilings and a marble fireplace, with a  modern twist. And while shades of terracotta, cream and grey rule in the open-plan living area, the bedroom's all about green and white. There's a well kitted-out, contemporary kitchen so cooking at home won't be a problem – but you're just steps away from some great places to eat and drink. And it's easy to explore further afield, even without a car, with the train station and ferry boats both nearby.

The owners have poured their heart and soul into a sympathetic restoration that makes a deliberate feature of some of the more patinated interior elements. The city of Como is a fantastic place to base yourself to explore some of the small lakeside settlements. Stroll a short distance to the harbour, where local ferries depart for the likes of Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio.
