If you prefer to be based near a green space, then this apartment could be perfect. It’s a short walk from the Villa Borghese with its vast park and historic buildings. The location is a little out of the main tourist area, but public transport links are close by and easy to use. With a terrace overlooking the rooftops of Rome, this home is a great place to relax after a day of sightseeing. The light living room here also sleeps two guests on a sofa bed at full occupancy. And while the kitchen has no oven and is compact, there are a variety of eateries in the locale.

Right around the corner from the Piazza del Popolo (and the magical views from the Terrazza del Pincio), just an eighteen-minute stroll to the angelic Trevi Fountain and an even easier ten-minute walk to the historic Spanish Steps – this place has convenience and ease written into its rustic wooden doors. Tastefully renovated and furnished, but without losing any of the charm of the structure, the interior is a picture of old and new. It's not often we mention our admiration for scruff marks, but the knocks on the wooden fittings nod to the history of the flat, and by extension, the city, so we really love them. Plenty of modern comforts have been added to offer everything you need for an effortless stay, from rainfall showers to cafetieres, it's all there. And when you're in search of a calming spot to delve into a good book, the third and fourth bedrooms benefitting from soft floral sofas, ornamental lanterns and plenty of natural light pouring in, simply call out for your attention.

It’s quite difficult to turn any corner in central Rome without running into a wonderfully historical landmark, ornate statue, or striking architecture. And the location of this fabulous apartment is no exception. Just six minutes from the Spanish Steps, five from Villa Borghese, and only two from the Piazza del Popolo, you’ll have no trouble seeing the sights. But the traditional Italian sights continue inside. Your bright living space features large French windows which illuminate rich, hardwood floors, chunky timber ceilings, and some captivating artworks. You’ll love relaxing on the plush sofa with a glass of primitivo in hand as the cherubs look upon you from the walls. Antique-style furniture and an ornate mirror complete this old-world Italian look, which continues through to the bedroom. We love the full wood-panelled wall, where the door to the ensuite is almost camouflaged within this rich wooden feature. After you’ve explored every inch of the apartment, your host has even more surprises. They can arrange for a tour around the city on a classic Vespa, or a wine tasting tour if you’re not quite ready to handle Rome’s traffic.

This rooftop apartment on the Via del Corso is ideally located for ticking off some of Rome's most iconic sights. You're just around the corner from Piazza del Popolo and a short walk from the Spanish Steps – not to mention, the street itself is renowned for shopping. In this home, though, you'll feel a world away from the crowded streets (though the staircase to the fourth floor might feel a little too narrow for some). Three balconies offer ample space to unwind and savour views of the Eternal City, and the open-plan loft style means the space feels bigger than it is. The flavours of Rome might inspire you to do some cooking at home, but with a location this good, you'll have your pick of the city's best restaurants.

Comfort reigns supreme in this bright and appealing apartment – it’s easy to imagine a family or group of friends feeling very at ease in this rustic home. While there's no bold design or styling, the sober colours and abundance of wood make for a very relaxing and breathable environment to return to after days spent sightseeing. We really loved the unsuspecting little touches around the flat too, such as the Japanese-style painted wardrobe doors and the reclaimed cabinet. You'll notice plenty of tasteful artwork adorning the walls also. Come together in the traditional dining area for a quick coffee, before setting off to complete your tourist itinerary. We were surprised by just how quiet it was here, despite being in the heart of Rome. Walk to the historic Spanish Steps in just fifteen minutes – from there, go shopping and limoncello-sipping around the bustling Piazza di Spagna. Ascend back up the steps to one of the city's most beloved sights, Trevi Fountain, under eight minutes on foot from your new home.

Situated under a ten-minute stroll from Piazza del Popolo, this apartment has a great location. You’ll also be within walking distance of a variety of museums, the Spanish Steps, and Villa Borghese.  In fact, you can see the park of Villa Borghese from this home’s large terrace thanks to its fifth-floor location in a historic building. The stylish open-plan living room is a great place to relax and it also accommodates one guest on a sofa bed at full capacity. This is a great base for your Eternal City visit.

The kitchen is compact but has everything you'll need to whip up light fare – although we think it's a great excuse to try the local eateries – and the bedrooms are bright if a little snug. We think it makes a convenient, fuss-free base for those keen to spend most of their time exploring the city.

This stunning penthouse apartment offers breathtaking views of the Pincio, home to the Spanish Steps. The terrace is perfect for relaxing, enjoying the scenery, and soaking up the sun – and there’s plenty of room for you to spread out. The owner of this apartment is an artist and architect – you can see how skilfully it’s been renovated, blending vintage pieces with modern style. In terms of location, you’ll be a short walk from many of Rome’s most popular attractions, including the Spanish Steps, Villa Borghese, and the Trevi Fountain.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a better location than this central Rome apartment. The must-sees of Via Veneto, Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, and Villa Borghese are all just minutes away on foot. Set on the top floor of a historic building, your host has gone above and beyond to ensure you'll have everything you need to settle in. Expect designer details like Italian baths and artisan lamps, antique furniture, and original oil paintings. If you're a full house, it's worth noting that two guests will be sleeping on the sofa bed in the living area. Three guests will also share one of the bedrooms, featuring a king-sized bed and a single bed. While this won't suit everyone, we think it could work out great for sharing with family or close friends.

We love this home for its multiple suntrap terraces – enjoy morning coffees on the loungers among the rooftops and lunch spreads on the wrought-iron patio set. With an umbrella for shade, you can spend hours out here with a good novel or bottle of crisp white wine. Inside, you’ll find a thoughtfully designed home with elegant designer furniture. Unwind in the bright, comfortable living area and enjoy a home-cooked feast together at the refined glass table. The bedrooms are decorated with lovely artworks and the marble bathrooms contribute to the understated air of luxury that this home has. Plus, you’ll be in a fabulous location, just a six-minute walk from the gorgeous Villa Borghese Gardens and eight minutes from the treasured Spanish Steps. 

The Roman Gatto

Two things about The Roman Farfalla stand out. That’s not to say that that’s all there is to it, but the location and the terraces are clearly the main draw. Having two separate outdoor spaces, both well furnished, is a real luxury, and it’s easy to imagine spending most of the day flitting between the two. That is, of course, if you’re even in the flat. The Spanish Steps are at the end of the street (Via Margutta, made famous by Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn), while most of the other major attractions are within easy walking distance.

The Roman Farfalla

Behind the Spanish Steps and Piazza del Popolo, The Roman Anatra is all about the location. Via Margutta, which stretches to the top of the Steps, is surprisingly quiet, given the crowds nearby. And while the flat itself only has two bedrooms, there are several in the same building, all managed by Martina and her team, so not only do they have a very professional operation, but larger groups can also book more than one place at a time.

Nothing will feel better than sinking into your sheets in your light-filled bedroom, french doors open, after a day exploring the ancient architecture of the Palazzo del Quirinale and Trevi Fountain, a fifteen-minute walk from your apartment. 

Make your way to the Vatican, stopping off for creamy espresso and velvety gelato along the cafe-lined streets, and be prepared with your passport to explore the Renaissance sculptures in the Musei Vaticani and Michaelangelo’s frescoes in the Sistine Chapel. When you’re ready to eat, stop in at Il Goccetto for their extensive selection of wines, marinated vegetables, salty charcuterie and artisan cheeses.

Behind the Spanish Steps and Piazza del Popolo, The Roman Civetta is all about its location. The little square outside is utterly beautiful – as characteristic an example as you’ll find in the entire city, and despite the crowds nearby, it’s surprisingly peaceful, even out on the terrace. Walk to one of Rome's most beloved sights, Trevi Fountain, in just fifteen short minutes, before returning home for a refreshing glass of vino. Stepping back inside, you'll notice rustic wooden ceilings, tasteful paintings, and elegant furnishings that make for a traditional and homely feel around the apartment. Sink into a sleek ghost chair around the stunning glass dining table, delve into a bowl of pasta, and hear the sounds of the world's most ancient city through the open balcony doors. Speaking of, round off a lovely day spent sightseeing with a game of cards on your sheltered terrace, while looking out to charming rooftop views. 

The Roman Civetta

From floors to ceilings, this apartment in central Rome maintains a sense of originality in its decor and finishes. It blends in with its historic surrounding – the bustling Piazza del Popolo with its pavement cafés and pop-up book markets is a three-minute walk, as is the beautiful Villa Borghese. If shopping is your thing, the Spanish Steps and Via del Corso are five minutes on foot. Large families or groups of friends will find this apartment to be an excellent home base. As soon as you step into the marble-floored hall you get a feeling of old-world Italy. The hall is dotted with antiques and moving through to the living and dining room it’s all floor to ceiling bookcases and herringbone floor. We particularly love the main bathroom, sleek in monotone black and white, yet embracing the vintage with its Singer sewing machine washstand and glorious oval tub.

Stay in a fantastic location on Via Margutta (the home of Gregory Peck’s journalist in Roman Holiday), just a six-minute walk from the Villa Borghese Gardens and eight minutes from the Spanish Steps. After some morning sightseeing, return home, past the excellent restaurant in the courtyard serving up breakfast, lunch and dinner, and fling open the doors to your private terrace. Sit on the patio set with an afternoon bottle of wine, or sprawl out on a lounger with a good novel – you’ll have a pretty view of the surrounding pastel buildings and plenty of sunshine. Inside, the apartment is just as lovely – a bright, tastefully decorated space with designer furniture and carefully selected artworks. At the end of your busy days in the eternal city, fall asleep soundly in private comfortable bedrooms, looking forward to another morning coffee on the patio.

In a beautiful eighteenth-century building, this home occupies the attic space and offers a private terrace right in front of the Piazza Del Popolo, overlooking incredible panoramic views of Rome’s historical centre. After breakfast and an espresso at the kitchen’s breakfast bar – or even take alfresco on sunny mornings – head out and explore the sights. Visit the Piazzo Del Popolo and the other attractions that are within walking distance, or hop on the metro to roam even more of the capital. 

In the evening, what could be a better way to enjoy your delicious Italian pasta and pizza than with an alfresco meal on the terrace as you admire the amazing views afforded to you? Sip great Italian wine as the sunsets on this view and the vista turns to nighttime before you finally retire inside.

Tucked between Piazza di Spagna and the Villa Borghese, you couldn't ask for a better spot to base yourself during your Roman holiday. The cobbled street outside is utterly charming, and even with the crowds milling about a few hundred metres away, it's quite peaceful. The sprawling Villa Borghese is just five minutes away – it's an absolute must-visit, home to lush greenery, city views and beautiful sculptures, plus it's where you'll find the Gigi Proietti Globe Theatre and Museo Pietro Canonica. You're also not far from other tourist attractions – the Spanish Steps are a ten-minute walk, while the Pantheon is reachable in twenty. Inside, the apartment is bright and roomy, with a sleek kitchen and two cosy sofas that you'll want to sink into after a busy. We particularly liked the beautiful artwork of local sights that adorn the walls, and there's even a delicious restaurant downstairs when you don't feel like cooking. End your evenings on the private terrace – just pour yourself a glass of wine and relax as the sun goes down, basking in the magic of Rome. 

The Roman Tigre

Being a resolute decision maker is probably the best quality one could have and it is with practical clarity that the designers who decorated this functional home, approached the job. This to say that if the general feel you are after in a home is luxuriant decadence, you should definitely keep looking. But if efficiency and comfort are your operational words, you might just as well stop here. With all the main sights at a stroll's distance, comfy sofas, and a private little terrace, you really might have found yourself a deal.

The Roman Pardo

One glance at the terrace and its panoramic vistas, and you'll understand why this penthouse is a firm favourite. With an alfresco dining table, comfy lounge chairs (including a swing) and city views on offer, it's the go-to spot to soak up the allure of Rome. You'll want to begin every morning out there – sipping espresso, watching as the city comes alive – and end each evening with drinks as the sun goes down over the rooftops. Inside is bright and charming, with more than enough space for groups to sprawl out. There's even a lovely housekeeper who'll see to the cleaning – she's lived here for twenty years and continues to look after the flat, even turning down the beds every day. Parioli is one of the greenest neighbourhoods in the city – though it's not right in the thick of it, there are quiet leafy streets to stroll down and excellent restaurants to slip into along Viale dei Parioli. But when you want to see the sights, just hop on the bus and you can reach the centre in twenty minutes.

The Fado Singer

Sip a negroni cocktail on this home's private terrace right in front of Piazza Del Popolo, with its stunning panoramic views of Rome's historical heart – this is la dolce vita. Inside there are more of those inspiring views of the Eternal City to admire – they stopped us in our tracks when we visited – they look like paintings. The classic style living space has lovely polished wood floors, a feature fireplace and an ornate galleried landing. This home is ideal for a couple, business professional or family of three.

Piazza del Popolo is a mere one-minute stroll from this home, or head to Terrazza del Pincio (four minutes on foot) – this 19th-century terrace with its fountains has fabulous views over to St. Peter's Basilica. It's the same walking distance to Villa Borghese Gardens, while Villa Medici is just over a ten-minute walk. Other attractions include the Spanish Steps, a twelve-minute saunter, and the Trevi Fountain, a twenty-minute amble.

This elegant apartment is tucked away just behind the magnificent Piazza del Popolo with its fountains and Rome's oldest obelisk (a two-minute stroll away). It's an excellent location for sightseeing with the beautiful Villa Borghese, a mere five-minute saunter and the Spanish steps, a ten-minute wander. Or check out the splendour of one of the city's most iconic landmarks, the Trevi fountain, which is under twenty minutes on foot. Inside this stylish home, while the Louis XVI period antiques catch the eye initially (and deservedly so – they are stunning), this apartment also incorporates more modern features, such as the sleek bathrooms. After a busy day, relax in the chromotherapy shower or let your host organise a private chef to prepare some classic Roman dishes for you and your guests. With its eclectic mix of traditional and contemporary design, this home offers something a little bit different from your standard place in the city.

It’s hard to look past The Roman Toro location. One of the old period buildings on the same street hosted Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday, while these days, getting to the most famous tourist attractions in the city is very easy – you're an eight-minute walk from Flaminio metro station. Or else head over on foot to Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps, just a quick fifteen-minute stroll away. Upon your return, take a wander through the Piazza del Popolo around the corner from the home. Back inside, it's a minimalist dream, with a sociable open-plan living space, sleek wood floors and elegant Kartell dining chairs. While the chic decor makes for a stylish Roman pad, it's a homely place too, with cosy bedrooms made up of tasteful artwork and warming lighting – and for those keeping one eye on work during their stay, you'll find a swanky study area to power through. There are several flats within the same palazzo here, all managed by Martina and her lovely team, so while that means they lack the feel of a truly lived-in home, the level of service is near that of a hotel, and larger groups might be able to book more than one place at once. It's a great option for those looking to be in the thick of things and still experience an authentic stay – this spot will have you feeling like a local in no time. 

The Roman Toro

This is a no-nonsense home. The location, slam dunk in the city centre, minutes walk from the major sights, would be enough of a selling point, but no, the host really decided to attend to things the right way. This home is functional and airy, and even if it won't end up on any architectural digest any time soon, it does the job and well. The fully accessible bathroom is something we particularly appreciate and it stands a tangible testament to the inclusive and practical approach used to decorate the apartment. This is a home for everybody, as everybody deserves to see Rome.
