This stylish apartment is right around the corner from Termini, Rome's biggest train station, so there's no doubt that the transport links are excellent. But many of the must-see sights can also be reached on foot, including the magnificent Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore five minutes away and The Colosseum just a little further, about a twenty-minute stroll. After fueling up on pasta and gelato at Mercato Centrale Roma across the street, set off for the Trevi Fountain, The Pantheon and The Spanish Steps, all reachable in under half an hour. When you're not off exploring, shopping or sipping Italian wine at one of the bars in this area, rest your tired feet back at home. We love the bold green colours and funky design – picture cowhide rugs, vibrant pop art and leafy wallpaper in the bedroom. The bathroom is also one of our favourites – it has a huge walk-in rain shower that's the perfect way to relax after a busy day. And this pad has more than enough room for two, so there's plenty of space to make yourself at home. In the evenings, pour yourself an aperitif and rustle up a feast in the contemporary kitchen, then end the night with Netflix in bed, nodding off while to the sound of your favourite shows.

This apartment may be in the heart of Rome, but there’s something distinctly country-chic about the decor. Period pieces – dressers, doors and the kitchen table – are all rough white-washed and feel rustic. The sound system is vintage, and the armchairs in the living room are upholstered in gloriously kitsch floral patterns. The jewel in the crown of the apartment is the sprawling outdoor terrace, which has sofas in sunny spots for a dose of vitamin D, and shaded nooks under parasols for when the heat gets too much. The bamboo pergola covered a couple of outdoor gas hobs, so you can cook and dine alfresco. Flowers and pot plants bloom for every corner and climb trellises for a bit of privacy. If you want to know just how central you are, just head out to the downstairs balcony and spot the Colosseum at the end of your street.

For the location, you're surrounded by local authenticity and just a seven-minute walk to the emblematic Colosseum. Find an assortment of eateries, wine bars and classy cafés to enjoy an alfresco lunch in the sun, before working off any over-indulgences with a gentle fourteen-minute stroll to Trevi Fountain – pennies at the ready. We also have to mention the apartment being on the cusp of Monti and Campitelli – both are full of beautiful piazzas, windy backstreets and family-run trattorias. Back home, we think there's somewhat of a contemporary Scandi feel, with plain bedspreads, pared-back furnishings and white shelved walls. Modern and minimalist, you'll also notice the elegant marble floors, quirky wallpaper prints and low-hanging light bulbs that we really loved.

This beautiful penthouse apartment is just the ticket for those looking for a relaxing stay away from the tourist crowds. Located in Rome’s Sallustiano neighbourhood, you’re far enough away from the city’s heavily crowded areas while still being able to reach all the main sights on foot or by public transport. Inside, a neutral palette sets a calming scene with wood floors and pops of blue in the pared-back decor. You’ll immediately be struck by the dazzling amount of natural light in the living area, thanks to the large glass doors that open up onto the first of two terraces. This first one – off of the living room – is a whopping 538 square feet and boasts several tables and chairs, a covered seating area as well as an outdoor shower to enjoy. This is the ideal spot to congregate at sundown over aperitifs and alfresco meals, while the second terrace – up the flight of stairs in the living room – is a rooftop haven with its sun chairs and equally majestic rooftop vistas, ideal for catching those Italian afternoon rays. Back inside, the two bedrooms are simple yet elegant, offering dreamy canvases for a blissful night’s sleep. It can't get more central than this – you'll be within walking distance of the Trevi Fountain, Villa Borghese, and countless eateries. After a long day on your feet, you'll appreciate the indoor Jacuzzi waiting for you back home. The overall design is contemporary and chic, featuring open-concept bathrooms that ooze luxury (though privacy is, of course, limited). Travelling as a group of six? Upon request, two guests can kip on single beds in the living area, but we think this home is best for four.

Step into the Art Nouveau sunroom of this period apartment and just soak up its vintage style and warm character. Surrounded by extraordinary windows – some frosted for privacy, others with stained glass – along with huge houseplants and antique furnishings, it's a striking space. Small, but perfectly functional, the kitchen leads to a hallway and a snug TV room with its own dining table. There's even the option of adding a cot if you're travelling as a family. Despite its position in an old, atmospheric square near Campo de’ Fiori, Falconry has been renovated recently, and most of the furniture has been made to measure, making the whole place feel very well crafted. Everything fits together, from the parquet floor to the various lamps, and even the terrace is taken care of, and not an afterthought. High up among the rooftops, it feels like a little refuge from the hectic city below.

Ask any Roman and they'll tell you how the Lateranense Palace isn’t as famous as the neighbouring Dome of St. Peter’s, but when you see it from a vantage point like this, it’s hard to say exactly why that is. It’s visible from the living room, balcony and one of the bedrooms, tying the whole apartment together in its grandeur and elegance. Plus you're only a fifteen-minute walk from one of the seven wonders of the world – the Colosseum. Inside, the home is bright and roomy, with a stylish navy sofa, gold accents, tasteful artwork and plenty of light reads that makes for a calming spot to unwind with a good book and a limoncello. Finding a street close to it all but not inundated with tourists is the holy grail in Rome – and that's precisely where you'll find this apartment. We call it the Goldilocks zone. But, ever the professional, your host Michele hasn’t used that as an excuse to rest on his laurels. The flat itself is in perfect condition, and while it doesn’t have the feeling of a family home, that’s often a good thing when it's not a sprawling home with space for all the host's personal items. The two bedrooms are on opposite sides of the flat, which is perfect for groups of friends travelling together, though families might want little ones closer by, or not. We understand. Sandwiched between the river and lively Campo de' Fiori, you're in a prime location to explore the city. The square is home to the city's most vibrant (and occasionally overpriced) street market (Monday-Saturday mornings). Still, this famous foodie haven is a good place to stock up on fresh produce, just a five-minute walk from your apartment. Cross over the stone footbridge, Ponte Sisto, and within a couple of minutes, you'll be immersed in trendy Trastevere. With its cobbled streets lined with charmingly faded facades, innovative trattorias, and craft cocktail bars, there's plenty to keep you occupied well into the night.

Want to be a short walk away from one of Rome's most famous landmarks? Then this apartment in Monti is spot-on. It's a stone's throw from the Colosseum and right around the corner from Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore. Shops, restaurants, and metro stations are also nearby. Back home, the blue and yellow colour scheme is instantly cheery. Your host has taken care of all the essentials, including a desk ideal for remote working. Two guests will sleep on the sofa bed (which may be a squeeze for everyone), but otherwise, it's a fantastic space to call home.

Finding somewhere that can comfortably sleep eight (and ten, at a stretch) in the Jewish Quarter isn’t as straightforward as you might think. Finding somewhere that can comfortably sleep eight and has a view as good as Teatro’s is even harder. It looks down onto the Largo di Torre Argentina, which holds the ruins of four temples and Pompey’s Theatre. It’s a fantastic spot, and Teatro makes the most of it, with a simple design intended to not interfere.

When it’s time for dinner, you couldn’t be better placed to sample authentic Italian grub. Your home is surrounded by family-run bakeries, ristorantes and those all-important gelaterias.

Deep within the narrow, medieval streets of Rome, this period building hides a surprisingly modern apartment for up to five guests. It's not a huge space but it's been cleverly configured to make the most of what it has – and to make it feel comfortable and high-end at the same time. Decorated in on-trend whites, creams and greys, it's bright and fresh. The kitchenette is stowed away in a cupboard-like space in the living room and while it's perfect for the basics, it's not going to appeal to keen home cooks – but this is Rome, and some of the best restaurants, cafes and bars in the world are right on your doorstep. Our favourite feature of this home is the view onto the charming Piazza dei Satiri outside. And while we're talking location, the famous Campo de’ Fiori market is just around the corner.

Among streets peppered with restaurants and book shops on one corner, and ancient ruins on the next, Rome’s Castro Pretorio district is a melting pot of history and culture. You can find basilicas, palazzos, and even the Teatro dell'Opera all less than 600 metres from your front door on the famed Via Cavour. Just like its locale, your apartment is full of original character and style.

Set on the first floor of a traditional block, the views from the French windows and private balcony offer a fantastic display of the local lifestyle. You can spot the honey and pink tones of nearby Italian architecture, as mopeds whizz by on the streets and people chat at kerbside cafés (all while you sip prosecco on the outdoor seating).

Some of Rome's most famous sights are only ten minutes away on foot – The Colosseum and The Forums – yet this neighbourhood is anything but a tourist trap. There's an authentic atmosphere in this part of town, with plenty of traditional eateries, vintage stores and chic wine bars loved by locals. It's also pretty quiet, all things considered. You'll find this apartment on a pretty street, only a few steps from Parco del Colle Oppio. With a bright living area, stylish bathrooms and comfortable bedrooms, this home is a calm place to escape the hustle and bustle. Pour yourself a glass of Italy's finest wine and relax on the sofa or around the glass dining table. If you're in the mood to rustle up a meal, the compact kitchen has plenty of dishes and culinary gear, though it's on the smaller side. There's even a desk in the second bedroom if you need to check work emails, but if it were up to us, we'd spend every day sipping espresso in one of the cafes, basking in the magic of Rome.
