This stylish apartment is right around the corner from Termini, Rome's biggest train station, so there's no doubt that the transport links are excellent. But many of the must-see sights can also be reached on foot, including the magnificent Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore five minutes away and The Colosseum just a little further, about a twenty-minute stroll. After fueling up on pasta and gelato at Mercato Centrale Roma across the street, set off for the Trevi Fountain, The Pantheon and The Spanish Steps, all reachable in under half an hour. When you're not off exploring, shopping or sipping Italian wine at one of the bars in this area, rest your tired feet back at home. We love the bold green colours and funky design – picture cowhide rugs, vibrant pop art and leafy wallpaper in the bedroom. The bathroom is also one of our favourites – it has a huge walk-in rain shower that's the perfect way to relax after a busy day. And this pad has more than enough room for two, so there's plenty of space to make yourself at home. In the evenings, pour yourself an aperitif and rustle up a feast in the contemporary kitchen, then end the night with Netflix in bed, nodding off while to the sound of your favourite shows.

Step into the Art Nouveau sunroom of this period apartment and just soak up its vintage style and warm character. Surrounded by extraordinary windows – some frosted for privacy, others with stained glass – along with huge houseplants and antique furnishings, it's a striking space. Inside, you’ll find contemporary-meets-retro design. We loved the botanical feature wall and cherry red theatre chairs. After waking up in bright bedrooms, find a spot to relax with a cappuccino and a book pulled from your host’s collection. When you start to feel peckish, a simple yet sleek kitchen has enough accoutrements to knock up a light brunch. Dig in on the balcony or pack it as a picnic and enjoy at Parco delle Energie, a twenty-minute stroll away.

The Duchess is a comfortable place with lots going for it, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t start with that view. The living room with its views over the neighbourhood is a great place to relax and the bedrooms are also a good size, and one has a desk for when you need to catch up on work. This place offers a truly unforgettable Roman holiday.

It’s easy to work out where the owner found inspiration for this gallery-like apartment – all you need to do is wander around the local neighbourhood of Monti. Bustling cafés, ornate architecture, and ancient grandeur is all around. A nine-minute stroll in either direction will take you to two of the city’s most majestic sights – the Colosseum and the Foro Romano. With antiquity and arts all around you, the theme continues as you return home.

Many of us are content with painting walls in a calming, neutral tone, but the owner of this apartment had bigger plans. In a nod to the frescoes of the city, the walls are painted in trompe-l'œil effect – with clever positioning of the mirrors, the artwork appears in 3D. While the kitchen tiles and dining table have also enjoyed some brushwork, and this art project was just one effort in the restoration of this nineteenth-century home.

We love the terracotta-coloured tilework, adorned by vintage pieces of furniture dotted throughout the living space and bedroom. Pad across tiles and decorative rugs towards the double doors – this scene isn’t an optical illusion. You’ve got a private balconette with colourful flowers and scenes of Roman streets below. Is there any better spot for a chilled glass of prosecco?

You’d be hard-pressed to find a better location than this. Set just moments from the Tiber and a short stroll to Rome’s most iconic sights, this apartment makes sightseeing feel effortless. Inside, space is a little tight – as is often the case in this part of town – but large windows in the living area bring in plenty of light. With herringbone floors, stylish furnishings and a smart layout that maximises every inch, it’s perfectly suited for two.

Situated on the famous street Via Merulana in the San Giovanni district, this is an excellently located home in a lively bourgeois area with good transport links to the rest of the city. The rooms are large and bright, all recently renovated with minimal modern design. The style of the home is more industrial than cosy thanks to the steel kitchen, prevalence of clean lines and minimal contemporary lighting, but that doesn’t compromise the comfort of the home. We did notice that the WiFi was notably slow, however, which might pose a problem for some guests.

There’s no doubting the USP of this bolthole apartment set in the heart of Rome’s Old Town. Just fling the windows wide to reveal the most monumental views of the Colosseum and the Imperial Forums, and it all becomes crystal clear.

Housed in a handsome period property befitting Rome’s historical centre, the majestic entrance makes quite the first impression. While inside, everywhere has been expertly reimagined for seamless, modern living with those polished finishes that Italians do so well. 

Pad out of the boutique-style bedroom and into the sleek, modern kitchen area to fire up the coffee machine. When we say that this home is a stone’s throw from the Trevi Fountain, we really mean it. Or should we say a coin’s throw? Watch where you’re aiming that penny, because this apartment is just steps away from Rome’s most striking water feature. In a quiet lane away from clamouring tourists, this spot has world-famous attractions, but with a local vibe. Stepping in to look around the decor, you notice a delightful mixture of old and new. Keep an eye out for chunky wooden beams, parquet floors, and original masonry as you settle down on antique furniture. Then there’s a somewhat contemporary Scandi look, with minimalist bedspreads, stepped bed frames, and modern, white shelved walls. These shelves are packed with literature and art books. Take your pick from the collection and perch in the study – with its twisted gold column, hardwood furnishings, and vintage typewriter, you’ll feel every bit the European intellectual. However, we feel that this home is somewhat of a landmark itself. As you step inside, you can help but be taken aback by the striking timber ceiling. These thick, rustic beams ooze old-world Italy, transporting you back in time. But with modern twists from minimalist furniture and quirky artworks, there’s an elegant clash of eras which makes this studio feel unique. We love the luxe touches like the marble kitchen sink and bathroom, although your host can provide an even better VIP experience. After being picked up by your private driver from the airport, you might fancy taking up their offer of a wine tasting tour or ride on a classic Vespa.

On a quiet street near San Giovanni in Laterano, this eclectic apartment offers a haven to return to after a day in the bustling centre. Though the neighbourhood is quiet, you’re still only a fifteen-minute stroll away from the Colosseum and Roman Forum. If you don’t fancy stretching your legs, the Manzoni metro station is a three-minute walk, putting all of Rome at your fingertips. This loft apartment is a mix of glamour and kitsch – think gilded mirrors, leopard-print throws and thick, red velvet curtains. Though the arched windows and exposed beam ceiling reassure that you’re in an old quarter of Rome. The eclectic fireplace set in a traditional mantle is a nice homely touch too.

Paquino is perfectly comfortable, and while it lacks a bit of flair in the design department, it’s pleasant to look at. None of this really matters though, because the big thing going for it is the position, right in the heart of Monti. There are loads of excellent restaurants around (although the kitchen is actually pretty good, easily enough for a decent meal) and you really are in the cobbled streets among the ancient ruins that define the city.


Paquino

No monument captures the spirit of Rome quite as like the Colosseum, and being as close to the amphitheatre as this home is a real privilege. Just six minutes (on foot) to the emblematic attraction, and a traditional local area full of authentic eateries and beautiful tangerine buildings – you're perfectly placed here. Back home, you'll find a sociable open-plan living room, kitchen and dining area benefitting from sleek grey floors, tasteful artwork of the city by night and plenty of natural light pouring in. Wandering through the home, you'll notice a collection of art and literature books, quirky adornments and funky printed wallpapers in the bedrooms. There, those who are working from home during their stay will be able to power through emails at the dedicated desk spaces. The other thing that really makes the flat stick out is Simona and her hosting. She’s an absolute delight and will do everything possible to make your stay as good as it can be.
