This is all about spending time with your loved ones. Whether it’s in the kitchen cooking up a storm, a night-in on the sofa with a good movie, or playing chess, this home has got you covered. Decorated with memorabilia from the hosts’ many travels to exotic destinations, it’s easy to see that it’s a loved home. In a fifteen-minute stroll, you can reach the Basilica of St. John Lateran and the Scala Santa, and in a thirty-minute escapade, you'll find yourself at the steps of the Roman Forum, or in the shadow of the Colosseum.

Housed in a typically Italian, early 20th-century building, this apartment is the ideal bolthole in Rome for a group or family. Designed as a guesthouse, it has hotel-level comfort, like soundproofing and en-suites in every bedroom. Each bedroom also comes with a dedicated workspace, and there’s a fifth desk in the open-plan living room. The decor has a bit of mid-century flair with parquet floor, a turquoise sofa and geometrically patterned wallpaper. This stylish apartment is right around the corner from Termini, Rome's biggest train station, so there's no doubt that the transport links are excellent. But many of the must-see sights can also be reached on foot, including the magnificent Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore five minutes away and The Colosseum just a little further, about a twenty-minute stroll. After fueling up on pasta and gelato at Mercato Centrale Roma across the street, set off for the Trevi Fountain, The Pantheon and The Spanish Steps, all reachable in under half an hour. When you're not off exploring, shopping or sipping Italian wine at one of the bars in this area, rest your tired feet back at home. We love the bold green colours and funky design – picture cowhide rugs, vibrant pop art and leafy wallpaper in the bedroom. The bathroom is also one of our favourites – it has a huge walk-in rain shower that's the perfect way to relax after a busy day. And this pad has more than enough room for two, so there's plenty of space to make yourself at home. In the evenings, pour yourself an aperitif and rustle up a feast in the contemporary kitchen, then end the night with Netflix in bed, nodding off while to the sound of your favourite shows.

Those visiting Rome for the ancient marvels and historic sights won't find a location much better than this. It’s 100 metres from the Colosseum and the ruin-filled park of Colle Opio is your next-door neighbour. Wandering the surrounding streets it seems like every corner is home to an ancient church between family-run trattoria and gelaterias. The apartment is housed in a beautiful 18th-century building, and stepping inside you feel the opulence of an old-world parlour. Velvet seats at the bistro table, a velvet sofa piled high with cushions and suspended candelabra create the opulence, while the exposed stone and timber beams keep one foot firmly in the building’s history. Chess can provide the evening’s entertainment, which feels fitting amidst the gilded mirrors and oil paintings. Heading up the striking mesh-metal staircase, the master bedroom has a pretty arched window with a window seat providing the perfect spot for a bit of holiday reading.

This apartment may be in the heart of Rome, but there’s something distinctly country-chic about the decor. Period pieces – dressers, doors and the kitchen table – are all rough white-washed and feel rustic. The sound system is vintage, and the armchairs in the living room are upholstered in gloriously kitsch floral patterns. The jewel in the crown of the apartment is the sprawling outdoor terrace, which has sofas in sunny spots for a dose of vitamin D, and shaded nooks under parasols for when the heat gets too much. The bamboo pergola covered a couple of outdoor gas hobs, so you can cook and dine alfresco. Flowers and pot plants bloom for every corner and climb trellises for a bit of privacy. If you want to know just how central you are, just head out to the downstairs balcony and spot the Colosseum at the end of your street.

With heaps of Italian soul and rustic charm, this quiet, well-kept and beautifully appointed apartment offers everything needed for that dolce vita. For the location, you're surrounded by local authenticity and just a seven-minute walk to the emblematic Colosseum. Find an assortment of eateries, wine bars and classy cafés to enjoy an alfresco lunch in the sun, before working off any over-indulgences with a gentle fourteen-minute stroll to Trevi Fountain – pennies at the ready. We also have to mention the apartment being on the cusp of Monti and Campitelli – both are full of beautiful piazzas, windy backstreets and family-run trattorias. Back home, we think there's somewhat of a contemporary Scandi feel, with plain bedspreads, pared-back furnishings and white shelved walls. This beautiful penthouse apartment is just the ticket for those looking for a relaxing stay away from the tourist crowds. Located in Rome’s Sallustiano neighbourhood, you’re far enough away from the city’s heavily crowded areas while still being able to reach all the main sights on foot or by public transport. Inside, a neutral palette sets a calming scene with wood floors and pops of blue in the pared-back decor. You’ll immediately be struck by the dazzling amount of natural light in the living area, thanks to the large glass doors that open up onto the first of two terraces. This first one – off of the living room – is a whopping 538 square feet and boasts several tables and chairs, a covered seating area as well as an outdoor shower to enjoy. This is the ideal spot to congregate at sundown over aperitifs and alfresco meals, while the second terrace – up the flight of stairs in the living room – is a rooftop haven with its sun chairs and equally majestic rooftop vistas, ideal for catching those Italian afternoon rays. Back inside, the two bedrooms are simple yet elegant, offering dreamy canvases for a blissful night’s sleep. When you’re ready to head out and explore, make a beeline for Villa Borghese (a ten-minute walk) or stroll just twenty minutes to throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain. With plenty of pizzerias and traditional, family-friendly trattorias along Via Flavia (a one-minute walk), as well as a plethora of shops and historic buildings on your doorstep, you’ve got everything you need for a glorious Roman holiday.

The Duchess is a comfortable place with lots going for it, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t start with that view. A city like Rome is full of views, but even so, this one is special, and the terrace itself is beautiful, with the furniture, the awning and the flowers all around (in summer, at least). This, along with the various antiques inside, makes you feel as if you’re in a Rome that existed 200 years ago, one that’s since been lost.

It’s easy to work out where the owner found inspiration for this gallery-like apartment – all you need to do is wander around the local neighbourhood of Monti. Bustling cafés, ornate architecture, and ancient grandeur is all around. A nine-minute stroll in either direction will take you to two of the city’s most majestic sights – the Colosseum and the Foro Romano. With antiquity and arts all around you, the theme continues as you return home.

Many of us are content with painting walls in a calming, neutral tone, but the owner of this apartment had bigger plans. In a nod to the frescoes of the city, the walls are painted in trompe-l'œil effect – with clever positioning of the mirrors, the artwork appears in 3D. While the kitchen tiles and dining table have also enjoyed some brushwork, and this art project was just one effort in the restoration of this nineteenth-century home.

We love the terracotta-coloured tilework, adorned by vintage pieces of furniture dotted throughout the living space and bedroom. Pad across tiles and decorative rugs towards the double doors – this scene isn’t an optical illusion. You’ve got a private balconette with colourful flowers and scenes of Roman streets below. Is there any better spot for a chilled glass of prosecco?

We think this industrial-style loft makes for a memorable stay in the Eternal City. The decor mixes contemporary and character features – you'll find everything from exposed brick walls and beamed ceilings to a unique glass floor that overlooks the lounge. It's got plenty of space for everyone, and the extra touches like board games and snacks are much appreciated. Plus, the location is fantastic for exploring near and far. Both the Colosseum and the metro station are within walking distance. Shops and restaurants are easily reached on foot, too.

Roman Loft

Despite its position in an old, atmospheric square near Campo de’ Fiori, Falconry has been renovated recently, and most of the furniture has been made to measure, making the whole place feel very well crafted. Everything fits together, from the parquet floor to the various lamps, and even the terrace is taken care of, and not an afterthought. High up among the rooftops, it feels like a little refuge from the hectic city below.

Plus you're only a fifteen-minute walk from one of the seven wonders of the world – the Colosseum. Finding a street close to it all but not inundated with tourists is the holy grail in Rome – and that's precisely where you'll find this apartment. We call it the Goldilocks zone. But, ever the professional, your host Michele hasn’t used that as an excuse to rest on his laurels. The flat itself is in perfect condition, and while it doesn’t have the feeling of a family home, that’s often a good thing when it's not a sprawling home with space for all the host's personal items. The two bedrooms are on opposite sides of the flat, which is perfect for groups of friends travelling together, though families might want little ones closer by, or not. We understand. Sandwiched between the river and lively Campo de' Fiori, you're in a prime location to explore the city. The square is home to the city's most vibrant (and occasionally overpriced) street market (Monday-Saturday mornings). Still, this famous foodie haven is a good place to stock up on fresh produce, just a five-minute walk from your apartment. Cross over the stone footbridge, Ponte Sisto, and within a couple of minutes, you'll be immersed in trendy Trastevere. With its cobbled streets lined with charmingly faded facades, innovative trattorias, and craft cocktail bars, there's plenty to keep you occupied well into the night.

The seven-minute walk to the Colosseum from this bijou apartment is lined with centuries-old churches and family-run pizzerias. Surrounded by ancient buildings and architecture, there’s no doubt you’re in the old centre here. Just beyond the Colosseum, you’ll find the sprawling ruins of the Roman Forum a ten-minute walk away. 

Within the apartment, you’ve got a calming haven of traditional furnishings and gold trim. The front door opens straight into the living room, where there’s a little collection of books for a holiday read. The cute, provincial-tiled kitchen is tucked away in one corner and there’s room to dine in here too. It’s the bedrooms that really grabbed us here though, with their hand-painted pastel murals of the Italian countryside above both beds. The little sit-outery with its bistro set that catches the sun in the morning isn’t a bad spot either.

At the same time, you’ll benefit from being slightly removed from the main tourist tracks, able to immerse yourself in the authentic atmosphere of one of Rome’s trendiest areas. 

Arrive to be welcomed by the light-filled open-plan living room and kitchen area, inviting you to kick off your shoes and relax after a long day of exploring the Eternal City. Finding somewhere that can comfortably sleep eight (and ten, at a stretch) in the Jewish Quarter isn’t as straightforward as you might think. Finding somewhere that can comfortably sleep eight and has a view as good as Teatro’s is even harder. It looks down onto the Largo di Torre Argentina, which holds the ruins of four temples and Pompey’s Theatre. It’s a fantastic spot, and Teatro makes the most of it, with a simple design intended to not interfere.

Deep within the narrow, medieval streets of Rome, this period building hides a surprisingly modern apartment for up to five guests. It's not a huge space but it's been cleverly configured to make the most of what it has – and to make it feel comfortable and high-end at the same time. Decorated in on-trend whites, creams and greys, it's bright and fresh. The kitchenette is stowed away in a cupboard-like space in the living room and while it's perfect for the basics, it's not going to appeal to keen home cooks – but this is Rome, and some of the best restaurants, cafes and bars in the world are right on your doorstep. Our favourite feature of this home is the view onto the charming Piazza dei Satiri outside. And while we're talking location, the famous Campo de’ Fiori market is just around the corner.
