Elsewhere away from home, the crystal-blue waters of Golfo Aranci are 15 kilometres away and the beach of Liscia Ruja – one of the jewels of the Costa Smeralda – is 14 kilometres.

On a panoramic promontory, close to the glamour and glitz of the Costa Smeralda, this charming villa is the perfect base for exploring Sardinia’s splendid coast. The view over the Gulf of Portisco is the kind of sight we’ve been dreaming of all winter. Picture yourself soaking up the Sardinian sun beside the lagoon-like pool or gazing out over olive trees and deep blue ocean from the veranda. Inside provides a welcome respite from the heat of the midday sun, with cool terracotta floors, traditional furniture and local handicrafts. You’re 2km away from a string of white sand beaches, as well as the Marina di Portisco with its selection of waterfront restaurants. The characterful borgo of San Pantaleo is just inland and is ideal for picking up fresh produce for an Italian style feast come the evening. You’ll want to be back home before the sun goes down though, for an aperitif with a view.

Blooming bougainvillea frames the stunning views this Sardinian home has to offer. It’s a romantic home set in the hills above Costa Smeralda, with plenty of room for a large group. The outside space is dreamy, with lush gardens and a huge veranda – though the swimming pool is shared with the other guests on the development. You’ll need to pay for your bed and bath linens – or bring your own – and we think hiring a car is a good idea if you want to get out to see more of north east Sardinia – and with these sea views, you'll be dying to hit the beach.

This villa is an excellent spot in which to admire the natural beauty of Sardinia. Thanks to the home's elevated position, guests get a wonderful view of the dazzling blue waters of Porto Rotondo from the upper floors. However, don't be surprised if the paradisical garden immediately below grabs your attention, too.

Out here in among the colourful flower beds and handsome granite walls, you can while away lazy afternoons paddling about in the swimming pool, catching some rays on the loungers or cooking up a storm in the outdoor kitchen (complete with a barbecue and pizza oven).

Inside, the home is spread across four floors, so while there are plenty of stairs, it feels cool and airy, thanks to the high ceilings, stark white walls and terracotta tiling underfoot. There's a discernible rustic theme to the design, from the wicker chairs and natural-themed artwork to the large rock feature in the main entrance hall.

With the nautical location, you might not be surprised to learn that there are two beaches that can be reached in just over a quarter of an hour's walk (Spiaggia dei Sassi and di Ira), while the historic city of Olbia takes a similar amount of time to reach in the car, too. Closer to home, there are a handful of restaurants, bars and discos in the local area.

Known for its colourful stairs and local market, Arzachena is the perfect base for exploring northern Sardinia. This practical apartment is right in the heart of town and boasts a quaint balcony with views over the stone houses. No doubt, it's our favourite spot for morning coffee and sundowners. Inside, the bright living area is comfortable and laid-back. The twin bed layout is ideal for two friends sharing, and there's a sofa bed for a third guest – just note that you'll need to pay for linen and towels.

Surrounded by nature, this home is in a peaceful spot. The swimming pool and hot tub here are shared with the building’s other guests, and you’ll also have your own private terrace – perfect for alfresco dining or relaxing in the sun. And animal-lovers can make friends with the dog and cats that live outdoors here – they’re very friendly and used to guests. It’s worth noting that at full occupancy – when guests five and six will be sleeping on sofa beds in the living area – privacy will be limited, as the only bathrooms are en-suites accessed via the bedrooms. Location-wise, you’re a few minutes’ drive from the artists’ village of San Pantaleo, and a ten-minute drive from Cannigione Beach.

The view from this villa is simply stunning. From every angle in the garden, your eye is drawn to the Gulf of Pevero, and to the lush scenery of this Emerald Coast home. The private infinity pool and outdoor lounge are undoubtedly the stars of the show here, but the interior has plenty of appeal too. Kids will love the cinema area, and the gym is handy too. The fine white sand and turquoise waters of Porto Paglia beach are just a short distance away. You’ll need to pay extra for towels and bed linen.

Just 150 metres from the beach, this fuss-free apartment may veer towards traditional, but it's cosy, comfortable, and contains all the essentials for a relaxed getaway. Set on the first floor, there are stairs to climb here, but they'll be worth it once you see the view. The sea-facing terrace is our favourite spot – it's perfect for soaking up the coastal scenery with a glass of wine in hand. On the resort, you'll also find a shared swimming pool and an on-site restaurant for easy meals.

Perched along the coast near Golfo di Marinella, this apartment is an ideal base for small groups. The open-plan living area features a small kitchen and comfortable sofas, while the bedrooms vary in size and are suitable for families (just note that only two rooms have air conditioning). Outside, a sea-facing terrace is a perfect spot to wine and dine in the fresh air. The resort also features a shared swimming pool, open for use during the summer months, and a restaurant. When you're ready to explore, you're just 150 metres from the sea and 300 metres from the closest beach.

Featuring picturesque scenery – best viewed from the private terrace, this apartment offers a boutique hotel-like experience, with the added privacy of having your own cooking and dining facilities. While the swimming pool is shared with other guests staying in neighbouring apartments, the complex is quiet and residential and there are thirty apartments in total on-site. While inside, cool terracotta tiles, vaulted ceilings, and crisp-white furniture keep everything uplifting and fresh.

If you're staying in a home situated on the Sardinian coastline, it would be a crying shame if the address didn't have an outdoor spot from which to admire the majesty of the local landscape. Thankfully, this apartment in the north of the island really delivers on the front.

Not only is there a large sun terrace with 180-degree views of the Tyrrhenian Sea and Tavolara island, but there are two further verandahs with alfresco tables and a well-kept garden. There are pleasant views out through the home's windows too, which, thanks to the elevated position, also bring in lots of natural light. This asset works particularly well with the bright and contemporary design throughout, from the white walls and glossy kitchen surfaces to the rather striking head sculpture in the living space.

When it comes to seeing a little more of the local area, there's a rock beach only eighty metres from the home and the sandy Spiaggia Mare Rocce is two hundred metres' walk. There's a decent choice of restaurants in the surrounding town of Pittulongu, while you can find a wider choice, plus some archaeological ruins, in the city of Olbia, just over fifteen minutes' drive away.

While the stark grey facade and sharply angled lines make a breathtaking first impression, we think the interiors speak for themselves too. We love how the architect decided to show off the incredible landscape of La Maddalena by creating a picture frame out of every window – each one set at the exact right height to maximise the impact. There’s even a telescope in the study so you can explore the area from the comfort of your own home, or go full Rear Window and see what your neighbours are up to down in the harbour. The muted grey tones of the exterior are mirrored in the contemporary kitchen, while the dining room is framed by floor-to-ceiling windows offering the best views in the house. Outside, you’ll find a wooden deck that’s perfect for morning coffees, evening cocktails, and everything in between.

This apartment sits just a few steps from the sea, and only 200 metres from Baia Caddinas, a gentle cove with fine white sand.
