Perched at the base of Mount Etna, two kilometres from the mountain town of Milo, this villa embraces old-world Sicily. It’s an easy drive to the buzzing old port city of Catania too. The freshest seafood is landed in Catania every day, and the lively central market is surrounded by seafood joints. The volcanic hills surrounding this villa are home to vineyards creating ancient wines.

Once you’ve got your fresh catch of the day and bottle of local white, head back to the villa to cook at the brick-built kitchen outdoors and serve at one of the myriad terraces or patios with dining tables and lounges. This is what la dolce vita is all about. Within the rest of the 21,000 square metres of Mediterranean gardens, you’ll find sculptures and artworks in homage to Sicily’s ancient history. There are woodlands filled with oak, chestnut and cherry trees and a sparkling swimming pool for a cooling dip.

The main house is a converted olive oil mill and was once home to a famous Italian singer. Indeed, the main sitting room and kitchen feel warehouse-big with a high, wooden ceiling and arched, art deco windows opening up to the patio. You can tell a creative used to live here as the walls are adorned with unique works of art and an upright piano stands pride of place. The second lounge is set around an old fireplace and embraced the old world with its oil paintings and dark wood antiques. When it comes to bedtime, there’s a separate guest house for two, out in the woodlands for those that like their privacy. The main bedroom is like a suite with its own seating area and private terrace.

Set across two levels and located in a building that dates back to the 1890s, it offers an effortless blend of rustic charm and contemporary interiors. All things considered, it’s no surprise this little gem was featured in the American interior design magazine, Apartment Therapy.

Housed in an early 20th-century building, you’ll immediately be immersed in the colours, scents and sounds of local Ortigian life from the home’s beautiful balconies – allowing you to people-watch over a morning cup of coffee or evening glass of red, courtesy of the home's wine cellar.

We love the blend of old meets new that gives this home such a singular feel. Many of the home’s original features remain, with high ceilings, decorative mouldings and colourful tiles sitting alongside bespoke contemporary details, like designer lighting, polished concrete accents and handcrafted furniture. There’s an abundance of natural light here too thanks to the French doors, allowing the sunlight to cast its glow across the interiors’ greys, pinks, reds and blues that recall the lively hues of the market just outside. 

Speaking of the market, you won’t be able to resist cooking up a homemade Sicilian feast with fresh produce in the blush kitchen, or alternatively, asking your host to organise a private cooking course and a tour of the local area. 

When you’re ready to venture further afield for some exploring, you’ll find the Cathedral of Syracuse an eight-minute walk away, Fontana di Diana a six-minute stroll and Arethusa Spring ten minutes away on foot. You’re also a twelve-minute walk from Cala Rossa Beach, while Castello Maniace is twenty minutes on foot from your door.

We don’t think there’s a better way to experience the ancient feel of Modica than with a stay at a historic stone home dating back to the 1500s. This home delivers that, along with a few 21st-century touches to keep things feeling luxurious. It’s in the heart of the city, where the narrow streets are home to chi-chi coffee shops and family-run restaurants serving Sicilian cuisine. You’ve even got a view of the ancient church next door from the terraced garden.

Set over stone terraces and patios, the garden is filled with verdant plants and cacti, and feels like a little oasis in the centre of town. Seats and sofas are shaded by olive trees, and there’s dining for the group by strings of fairylights. Then there’s the circular stone hot tub, shimmering like a jewel. 

Inside, it feels like an ode to Sicilian tradition, with pristine white walls and minimalist furniture. The living room is adorned with modern art and has a selection of books for some downtime, and the kitchen is all sleek modernity despite being tucked behind an old stone archway. The old water cistern has been transformed into a wine cellar, with a high-end selection of local Sicilian bottles. Surrounded by farmland and olive trees in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed region of Val di Noto, this nineteenth-century villa is as Sicilian as it comes. The honey-coloured stone building is a thing of beauty and is full of pleasant surprises, from terraces with sumptuous views and pretty coloured tiles in the bathroom to a traditional fireplace. Many of the walls are painted a cooling shade of white and there's also a pair of minimalist four-poster beds to squabble over. Outside is where you'll find the real showstopper, though — a temptingly blue swimming pool surrounded by a stone wall, loungers and a pagoda for escaping the sunshine. Keep wandering around the grounds and you'll come across a vegetable garden, aromatic plants and a cute courtyard ideal for long lunches. When you're in the mood for days out, the historic town of Ragusa lies twenty-five minutes away in the car, while it's possible to get to the beach at Marina di Ragusa in under twenty. Your host can also arrange weddings for up to eighty people upon request in the ancient warehouse or Mediterranean garden facing the olive orchard.

There's no denying that this apartment's sun-drenched terrace is a real show stopper. With rooftop views and spots to wine, dine, and unwind together, we can't think of a better setting for outdoor entertaining. And, since there is no living space inside, the terrace is all the more important, though there is a sofa and a TV in the main bedroom for those rare rainy days. Topping it all off is the location. This luxurious villa is a stunning base in east Sicily. It’s just above the seaside town of Letojanni and is close to Taormina, with beaches nearby. The villa boasts truly glorious views over the Ionian Sea and Taormina, which can be admired from inside as well as outside, thanks to floor-to-ceiling sliding French doors. Inside, the decor is crisp and clean, and you’ll find everything you need to enjoy a comfortable, relaxing stay. There’s even a gym and a sauna. Outside, the infinity pool is the main focus – aside from the views. The pool has a hydromassage area, and there’s a separate Jacuzzi. We love the alfresco dining area – there’s a barbecue to cook on too.

With the ancient streets of Catania right on your doorstep, and a great view over the port to the sea, this two-bedroom apartment is a brilliant base for exploring the island’s second-biggest city. Start your day with breakfast on the balcony, before heading out to discover Baroque architecture, bustling pavement cafes, and volcano views (moody Mount Etna looms large over the city). If six of you are staying, two will be sleeping on the sofa bed, so it might be a little cosy. And the nearby train line might make things noisy from time to time. On the plus side, that puts you walking distance from the station, so you can easily see more of Sicily’s sights.

This cozy apartment is perfect for a romantic getaway to Italy, and this central location means you can treat yourself to authentic wines and delicious Italian cuisine for date night. Visit gorgeous art museums or head to the shopping district to find gifts for your loved ones back home.

Evenings can be spent snuggled up in front of the TV, with the moonlight pouring in through the balcony door. Notice the streets below become quieter as the day draws to a close, and drift away ready for another day of adventuring.

This clifftop villa has something of a show-home feel, and it’s no surprise when your hosts are two brilliant architects. Both the indoor area and outside are absurdly stylish. The living space is all grey-scale and geometric, with a modular sofa and hexagonal tiles. The theme is continued upstairs, where there are sharp-angled mirrors, diamond patterns and Escher-inspired floors. We love the use of colour, particularly the turquoise bathroom, a reminder of the spectacular surroundings. Outside, amidst the Sicilian olive trees and gardens, a spacious terrace gives way to incredible views of the Mediterranean, with glimpses of Cefalù on the horizon. The nimble-footed among you should take the narrow steps down to the Tyrrhenian Sea below, perfect for swimming and snorkelling. Or choose the more leisurely approach and wander 700m down the secret path to the beachfront. Spend your evenings under pink skies, with wine and conversation flowing freely around the alfresco dining table, before crashing into comfy beds, lulled to sleep by the gentle lapping of waves.

Nestled away in the Hyblean region of southern Siciliy, this farmhouse was recently treated to a four-year refurbishment that finished in 2021 and this hard work is immediately apparent as you take a tour around the buildings and the grounds.

We're full of praise for the way that period features have been retained alongside more contemporary features, which lead to super-sleek kitchens and bathrooms rubbing shoulders quite happily with patches of exposed stonework and wooden ceiling beams overhead. A former stable has been turned into a lavish dining space, while the wine cellar has been kept and filled with local bottles.

The very same climate that makes Sicily so propitious for wine production is a pretty sizable reason why people jet over to the island for a sojourn and there are plenty of ways to bask in the sunshine here. The large swimming pool and adjoining Jacuzzi are sure to see plenty of use, as are the barbecue and alfresco tables on the verandahs that are treated to peaceful views of the local landscape.

Although there's a welcome sense of isolation at the address, the nearest town – Frigintini – is only 3km away and has a few restaurants and shops to tide you over. A little further afield, there are beaches on the island's southern coastline starting from as close as 30km away – well within range for a day trip or two.

Located on the ground floor, the interior of this home has been designed by Samuele Mazza. There are high ceilings and large windows overlooking the courtyard fountains, while earthy hues and art adorn the walls.

It couldn’t be easier to explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Parco Mannarazze is 550 yards away, while Villa Comunale is just a little further. For a day at the beach, Noto Marina Beach is 3.4 miles from this glamorous home.

Bear in mind that there are quite a few steps to climb inside, some of which are steep, so children will need to be supervised at all times.
