The breathtaking Vendicari nature reserve is a twenty-four minute drive away, a paradise for birdwatching, where you’ll find hiking trails, pristine beaches, and blooming native plant life. If you do want to catch a bit of the island’s buzz and stock up on supplies, the historic town of Castelvetrano is a short drive away. But this place is all about the tranquil life, floating in the huge, turquoise swimming pool or enjoying a long, lazy lounge thanks to the full outdoor kitchen. There are plenty of shaded spots with comfy seating dotted around the grounds. 

The villa is set out courtyard-style, all on one level (except for one little turret) with white buildings clustered around the pool terrace. Bedrooms, living rooms and dining areas have their own entrances onto the terrace. Inside, we love the old-world feel of the place with its sloped, wooden ceilings in the bedrooms and Persian rugs in the living room. Furniture feels like it belongs to a 19th-century aristocrat. There’s a big wood-burning stove in the dine-in kitchen, though we doubt you’ll need it in the heat of spring, autumn and summer. All in all, this place feels like you’ve got your own castle in the Sicilian countryside.

Sure, it’s fairly fuss-free in style, and we think the kitchen is best suited to whipping up light bites, but this home’s all about the location for us. Dining out is a breeze with an abundance of eateries nearby, and Ortigia market is a must-visit. The Temple of Apollo is a stone’s throw away, or venture further south to discover the Cathedral of Syracuse, the Fountain of Diana, and Cala Rossa beach.

This villa rests on a hillside, 600 metres from Cala Mazzo di Sciacca beach. If you want to explore traditional Sicilian cuisine and wine in the local bars, the seaside village of Scopello sits prettily nearby. The coastline here is dotted with sweeps of soft sand and crystalline water, and the nature reserve of Zingaro is in the area.

 The home’s burnt-sienna facade is striking against a near-constant blue sky, and a terracotta roof and wooden shutters speak of old-world Sicily. Nestled away in the Hyblean region of southern Siciliy, this farmhouse was recently treated to a four-year refurbishment that finished in 2021 and this hard work is immediately apparent as you take a tour around the buildings and the grounds.

We're full of praise for the way that period features have been retained alongside more contemporary features, which lead to super-sleek kitchens and bathrooms rubbing shoulders quite happily with patches of exposed stonework and wooden ceiling beams overhead. A former stable has been turned into a lavish dining space, while the wine cellar has been kept and filled with local bottles.

The very same climate that makes Sicily so propitious for wine production is a pretty sizable reason why people jet over to the island for a sojourn and there are plenty of ways to bask in the sunshine here. The large swimming pool and adjoining Jacuzzi are sure to see plenty of use, as are the barbecue and alfresco tables on the verandahs that are treated to peaceful views of the local landscape.

Although there's a welcome sense of isolation at the address, the nearest town – Frigintini – is only 3km away and has a few restaurants and shops to tide you over. A little further afield, there are beaches on the island's southern coastline starting from as close as 30km away – well within range for a day trip or two.

Nestled next to the beach in Syracuse, this home is an ideal base for a stay on the Sicilian coast. With one bedroom open to the living area below, we think this apartment is best suited to a family who don’t mind the lack of privacy. Still, when you can wake up to sea views, best enjoyed from the private balcony, sleeping on the mezzanine area seems a small price to pay. You’ll be drawn to the water in no time here – and you’re in luck, Cala Rossa beach is a mere 50-metre stroll away.
