This stunning cliffside home perched on the Tuscan coast will leave you lost for words. The endless sea views alone are enough to make your jaw drop, while the striking architecture brings to mind a James Bond movie. Look to the azure horizon while cooling off in the inviting saltwater pool or lounging on the spacious sun deck. Several terrace areas offer ample seating for outdoor socialising, while the garden is also a tranquil place to relax. Inside, floor-to-ceiling windows allow the panoramic vistas to continue, while creating a bright and breezy feel throughout the entire space. It's the outside that caught our attention most, though – there's plenty of space for alfresco dining and chilling by the pool. And if you really fancy unwinding, there is a spa here you can use for an additional fee.

Set atop a cliff, this wondrous white house really is the ‘pearl of the Tyrrhenian’. Carefully preserved by generations of aristocratic families, this historic home – dating back to 1820 – wears in heritage very much on its sleeve. Boasting inimitable interiors characterised by terracotta and parquet floors, walls adorned with Renaissance-era paintings and period furniture, you’ll find this Italian idyll utterly transporting. Set within its own grounds, surrounded by holm oak trees and overlooking the sea, this home’s outdoor offering is equally if not more enticing. 
Take your morning coffee out onto the terracotta sea view terrace, dine alfresco in the garden or find a quiet spot to read under the veranda. Come dinnertime get your grill on before chilling out in the comfortable seating area surrounded by greenery. Make a beeline for the first-floor terrace at sundown for more spectacular sea views.  At the day’s end retreat inside for family games or movie night by the fire before climbing the marble staircase to bed. Indulge in a long, hot soak in the tub before hitting the hay, you won’t regret it.

The farm produces its own Tuscan olive oil and honey, and there is even a top rated restaurant where you can sample some of the farm’s produce. Days can be spent riding the horses from the stable, exploring the area by E-bike, or taking a cookery class at the restaurant, where you might learn how to make fresh pasta or cantuccini. On more relaxed afternoons, treat yourself to a spa or beauty treatment – there is nothing more serene than a massage in the garden, with a gentle breeze and a soundtrack of cicadas.

A modern build, the home was finished back in 2002 and thanks to its high-quality finishings and construction techniques, it doesn't appear to have aged a day. This elegant home in Tuscany is in a dreamy spot in a valley, in a countryside setting that leads to absolute relaxation. The villa is full of character, with antique furniture and wooden beams, in addition to mesmerising views. 

The outside space is lush and pretty. Roses and lavender have been planted alongside a wealth of trees, making the garden feel like an oasis. In the morning, sip coffee at the table under the gazebo, admiring the views and planning your day. If you’re anything like us, you won’t be able to resist a dip in the hedge-lined swimming pool for long. Dry off on a sun lounger with a good book, or start a table tennis tournament with your friends. 

In the evening, set up outside at the long dining table. You might like to arrange for a local chef to come and cook for you – that way you can enjoy a cocktail hour on the terrace before dining as the sun sets beyond the valley. 

The villa is only a short walk along the river to the centre of peaceful Poggibonsi, so you can easily dine out in the local restaurants or grab a gelato. Montemorli vineyard is just a twenty-minute walk up the hill, while the medieval beauty of San Gimignano is a mere twenty-one-minute drive away. It may be less than a thirty-minute drive from the spectacular Renaissance city of Florence, but this home feels like another world. Located up in the hills, you'll discover a spectacular villa – complete with a clock tower – just outside the small village of Cellai, where time seems to stand still. 

Pad across terracotta-tiled floors, with wood beam ceilings above, and discover rooms filled with character and charm, where period features and modern touches sit effortlessly alongside one another. Nowhere is this better displayed than in the contemporary kitchen and adjoining dining room with its antique stove. Each of the four bedrooms blends rustic charm with supreme comfort, while the bathrooms are fitted out with beautiful tiles and gleaming marble for a touch of luxury.

Step outside and you'll discover a lush landscape of terraced gardens, an inviting pool and breathtaking views over the Tuscan terrain. By honouring the villa's history – and thereby retaining its character – the home feels traditionally Tuscan with its terracotta tiles and wooden beams. Walk barefoot across the floors to savour the coolness of those tiles on hot days, or light a fire in the wood-burning stove and stare up at the beams, imagining what life would’ve been like here. Step inside and discover a light-filled canvas of exposed brick walls, terracotta-tiled floors and lofty ceilings adorned with striking timber beams. We love the open-plan living area, a free-flowing space primed for relaxation with ample seating, a delightfully-equipped country kitchen and a majestic stone fireplace. Down the hall, three sumptuous sleeping quarters promise restful slumbers and, through timber-framed windows, postcard-worthy views of your glorious surroundings.

Outside, the peaceful shared courtyard, furnished with dining furniture and a hot tub, beckons you to unwind in the sun. Enjoy an alfresco breakfast here before a day of adventure. Take a stroll through the town, enjoy a morning swim in the Merse River, or hike through the wooded Alto Merse Nature Reserve, just twenty minutes away on foot.

Set on an estate dotted with trees, shrubs, and other native foliage, this home ecompasses the entire first floor of an ancient villa in Orentano. Despite sharing things like the pool, tennis court, and soccer field with another home, there is enough room on the property for it to still feel private. That’s probably helped along by the fact that you have your own private garden and barbecue – not to mention the sheer size of the home itself. Move easily between rooms and use the easy go-between as an excuse to nip into the kitchen for another cup of coffee and a dozen more biscotti to take back to where you’re reading on the plush sofa. Take the spiral staircase up to the loft where you’ll find the rustic bedrooms and bathrooms for when you’re ready to turn in at night. When you think loft, you might conjure up images of a tight squeeze, but the addition of the skylights in almost every room here allows the light to make the space feel more open. 

With the host and his family living on the estate, you’ll sometimes find yourself around the table enjoying their homemade pasta alfresco with soft music playing in the background. There’s also a brick pizza oven here, so don’t be surprised if you eat more margarita than you’d care to – we know, that is not even remotely possible. 

When you’re not enjoying the home, you can make a trip to Pisa, Voltera, or Florence – each with their unique charm – or borrow the bicycles and simply explore the surroundings on two wheels instead of four. After a day of activity under the Tuscan sun, take a late-night swim in the heated pool, and when you’re ready to return inside, why not linger a little while longer to gaze up at the stars.

Gazing out across the Mediterranean, this home places you in Porto Venere – recognised by the New York Times as one of the world's most beautiful spots. The large, south-facing windows really heat up the home, especially in summer – and with no air conditioning, you might find yourself spending more time on the balcony, enjoying cocktails as you look out across the sea. With ferries regularly departing between April and October, the Cinque Terre area is easily accessible here – though with a gorgeous beach just outside your front door, we wouldn't blame you for spending the lion's share of your time closer to home.

La Sprigione

For a taste of authentic Tuscan living, this holiday home is a great choice. This apartment is one of six, renovated from a 15th-century structure by a historically conscious architect. The result of the renovation is an apartment that boasts classic Tuscan design with modern amenities and comfort – you can dine beneath wooden beams and stay cool thanks to the terracotta tiles. 

Outside, a pretty patio boasts a wood-fired pizza oven and alfresco seating. After a day spent in the sunshine, it’s delightful to sit in the shade of the trees and sip local wine while the aroma of pizza fills the air. 

This is a restful home on the outskirts of the village of Brenna, which is just five minutes away on foot. If you need to cool down, you might stroll five minutes to Stazione Balneare Merse where you can swim from the river beach. Of course, the apartment is also in a great location for exploring Tuscany, whether you fancy touring the vineyards or seeing the galleries and museums of the cities. It takes twenty minutes to drive to Siena, making it a perfect day trip.

An open space in a sixteenth-century building, in the hilly outskirts of Florence that, at time at times, has been both a stables and a nightclub, Thermae is one of the most spectacular places we’ve seen in Italy. Its restoration has been a labour of love for the host, Giovanni, and the way that he’s incorporated technology into the original structure is simply impressive. There’s too much to describe here, but know that everything's been taken care of. And if we did have to choose one thing that stood out, it might have to be the pool, hidden away in the vaults, and only accessible through a trapdoor.


Thermae

Overlooking the Tuscan countryside from its hillside position, this rustic villa boasts some incredible views – best celebrated from the outside dining area and elegant infinity pool. We think it's a great fit for families with a lovely private garden as well as flexible sleeping arrangements – the twin beds can be converted into doubles upon request. Keen cooks will love the modern chef's kitchen for preparing alfresco suppers – though if you feel like dining out, the nearby village of Volpaia and the market town of Radda are both just a short drive away. You will need to hire a car to get around here, and the drive will often be hilly and uneven.
