The home itself is split across two separate villas, sharing a grand social space outdoors. Two swimming pools are connected by an infinity edge and beg for a dip on a hot day. Dine poolside under the shade of a parasol, or set up beneath the shaded veranda for a barbecue feast. Come sundown, the gazebo by the pool shades comfy sofas and chairs for an aperitivo. The first thing that catches the eye is the inviting, Roman-style swimming pool that looks out over the fauna-filled valley and patchwork fields to hazy hills in the distance. A loggia-style dining area houses a table for the group and a barbecue grill, all with that stunning view before you. Steal away to the olive grove and curl up in a hammock with a holiday read.

Inside, antique and vintage pieces throughout add to the old farmhouse feel of the home, alongside wooden ceilings and terracotta tiled floors. A huge double-sided fireplace sits between the dining and living room for cosy evenings in. The view from the arched window in here is simply sublime – framed like a picture on the exposed stone wall. Up on a mezzanine level, you’ll find a secluded little reading nook to hide away in.

My Enchanted Tower

Sitting within a medieval borgo (little village) whose heyday was the early 17th century, this villa complex embraces old-world Umbria. It’s pure peace and quiet out here between the endless olive groves (extra virgin olive oil is the region’s speciality) and rolling hills covered in a patchwork of fields. It’s five kilometres to Monte Castello di Vibio with its ancient theatre and fifteen kilometres to the pretty town of Todi for restaurants and supermarkets.

The yard, where wheat was once threshed by hand, is now home to a smattering of chairs and tables for tipples in the sunshine. The porticoed upper terrace is the perfect spot for breakfast, or big barbecue lunches, with views of the 22-hectare estate. But the crowning glory of the gardens has to be that Roman-style swimming pool with its panoramic view of the countryside.

Accommodation is split between three separate buildings set around the courtyard. Two annexes have their own kitchenettes, living rooms and dining area so the group can spread out. The main villa is home to myriad antique-filled lounges and living rooms, including a striking main lounge set around the ancient hearth. Low, wood-beamed ceilings and old agricultural tools on the walls give that rustic farmhouse feel. A little games room invites guests to sit down for a game of chess or to peruse the library of books in here. But the real bonus inside is the dedicated celebration room which is a vast, barn-like space which can be set up for dining, dancing or even a spot of yoga.

Never a Frown

Traditional and cosy, this villa has all the hallmarks of an Umbrian getaway. The private pool is open in the summer and boasts panoramic views of the surrounding hills. Indoors, there's plenty of character to admire – the home was built in 1616, after all. Our favourite spot is the conservatory-style lounge, with its large windows showing off the scenery. Two bedrooms are located in a separate annexe, making it ideal for those wanting a bit more space and privacy. As for location, you'll be based near the medieval village of Monte Castello di Vibio and within easy driving distance of Todi, Perugia, and Orvieto.

Umbrian Touch

Culinary types, rejoice – Quattro Formaggi has everything an epicurean could need. Take self-catering to the next level by harvesting vegetables from the garden, picking olives from the trees, or even catching your own fish from the pond (rods provided). Assemble your ingredients in the outdoor kitchen, then roast them on the barbecue or pop them on a pizza base for baking in the stone oven. There’s even a cantinetta for storing and serving wine. Once you’ve cleared away the plates, relax in the mosaic-encrusted pool for spectacular views over Tuscany.

You’ll find this stone-clad, hilltop home in the glorious Umbria countryside, surrounded by two hectares of lush lawns, embellished with young olive trees and fragrant bushes of lavender, rosemary and thyme. Spending time here is nothing short of idyllic. Chic farmhouse style interiors in whites and creams make spaces feel crisp and fresh. We love how the kitchen’s sleek, chrome fridge and butcher’s block contrast with the quaint Welsh dresser. In the living room, French doors open up to a patio that’s perfectly set up for entertaining. Sip bittersweet negronis on the rattan sofa or gather around the alfresco dining table to enjoy local produce cooked up on the barbecue. The view from this 13th-century tower-turned-villa could be the envy of every Italian landscape painter. The hills of the Monte Rufeno national park, kissed golden at sunset and sunrise, sprawl before you and there’s probably no better place to take it all in than from the edge of the infinity pool. If the Italian sun gets too much, retreat to the lounge and dining area beneath the vine-dappled pergola – there’s a traditional stone-built pizza oven and grill out here for the chef of the group to try some regional classics alfresco. 

You can still dine with a view indoors, thanks to the sunroom with its walls of glass – the ideal spot for breakfast. While the rest of the tower and annexe is all wood-beam ceilings and terracotta floors, the kitchen feels sleek and modern with a dedicated wine fridge to chill your orvietos and pinot grigios. Apart from aspiring chefs, there’s plenty to entertain all kinds of visitors here – hit the gym and unwind with a sauna session after, head to the media room for a movie night or tuck yourself away with a book from the big collection of holiday reads. Winding your way up the staircases of the old tower, the view gets better and better. You’ll find bedrooms on the upper levels, with fabulous antique beds and ensuites – some with slipper tubs for a long soak.

Out here on the Tuscan- Lazio-Umbrian border, hiking trails snake through the Monte Rufeno national park and vineyards tumble town the hillsides (in fact, there’s a winery on the estate). Should you wish to stock up on supplies or explore the medieval streets of the nearest picturesque Tuscan town, Orvieto is a short drive away.
