This holiday home is immersed in the countryside of Florence, just forty minutes from the historic city. Despite its proximity to one of Italy’s most popular tourist spots, it’s a tranquil base, perfect for those seeking rest and relaxation. We love the private pool and the veranda, which is ideal for barbecues and sipping local wine. The views are magnificent, as the home is surrounded by lush greenery. The home itself is traditional and rustic, with exposed beams and tiled floors. The sleeping arrangements aren’t the most private, with two guests on a sofa bed and the other three sharing the bedroom. Still, this home has charm in abundance so we think it’s a good shout for families.

Succumb to the relaxing magic of the Tuscan countryside in this traditional stone brick villa. Surrounded by breathtaking olive groves and gently rolling hills, the setting is picture-postcard perfect. We love the traditional interior, but it's the gorgeous landscape that takes the cake. The outside space is lush and pretty. Roses and lavender have been planted alongside a wealth of trees, making the garden feel like an oasis. In the morning, sip coffee at the table under the gazebo, admiring the views and planning your day. If you’re anything like us, you won’t be able to resist a dip in the hedge-lined swimming pool for long. This charming apartment is in the old town of Colle di Val d'Elsa, a typically medieval region of Tuscany famous for crystal glass production. It’s a ten-minute stroll into the centre where you’ll find restaurants, cafés and archaeological museums beyond the ancient town walls. Further afield, the city of Siena is a half-hour drive away, ideal for a day trip.

The apartment itself is housed in a striking 16th-century building just outside the bridge that leads to il Castello. Wood beams on display hark back to the building’s roots, but the decor is decidedly modern. Vibrant modern art is displayed above the plush, L-shaped sofa and the kitchen is a sleek space of white cabinets. The best bit is the view from French-style windows, which shows off golden fields and hills, even though you’re a short walk from the town centre.

​​Restored by an Italian architect with a gentle touch, this villa has been updated and split into more modern apartments, but without ever compromising on the original charm. By honouring the villa's history – and thereby retaining its character – the home feels traditionally Tuscan with its terracotta tiles and wooden beams. Walk barefoot across the floors to savour the coolness of those tiles on hot days, or light a fire in the wood-burning stove and stare up at the beams, imagining what life would’ve been like here. Nonnas rolling out pastry for tortellini, children helping churn gelato, wine flowing, and bowls of food changing hands in a celebration of ingredients, and life. You might even wish to recreate that – a holiday well spent.

An open space in a sixteenth-century building, in the hilly outskirts of Florence that, at time at times, has been both a stables and a nightclub, Thermae is one of the most spectacular places we’ve seen in Italy. Its restoration has been a labour of love for the host, Giovanni, and the way that he’s incorporated technology into the original structure is simply impressive. There’s too much to describe here, but know that everything's been taken care of. And if we did have to choose one thing that stood out, it might have to be the pool, hidden away in the vaults, and only accessible through a trapdoor.

There's nothing like a private pool to get you into that holiday spirit and at this home in Marina di Pietrasanta, you'll also have the sandy beach just a short walk away. A charming seaside resort with plenty of restaurants and bars to enjoy, you'll have local parks to explore, numerous beaches to play on and surrounding villages to seek out – as well as the big attractions of Lucca (around forty minutes by car) and Pisa (around fifty).

This charming apartment is located in perfect tranquillity inside a converted ancient palace, where the environment has been impeccably refurbished whilst respecting the original structure. We love how much greenery surrounds this home, and how it can make you appreciate the simple things in life as you take a long walk through the flora, breathing in the fresh air and listening to the bird's chirp. The wooden beams definitely give this home the character it deserves, as do the shutters that can be opened to let in light as you gaze out over the trees of an ancient noble villa.
 
When you want to be a part of the city's hustle and bustle, take the sixteen-minute drive to Lucca and bike along the city walls, losing yourself in the history of what would've been, before indulging in some retail therapy in the Old Town. Admire Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, a magnificent square constructed on the ruins of the ancient Roman amphitheatre that spreads a mix of historical beauty and true Italian flavour – stop for a bite to eat in the courtyard with innumerable cafes and restaurants.

It is 35km from Florence, making a day trip to the city easy. While you are there, be sure to sample some of the excellent wines from the region. After a day of exploring, kick back on the sofa in your opulent living room, before retreating to the serene calm of the bedroom for a perfect night’s sleep. With its romantic setting and unbeatable location, this would be the perfect getaway for couples.

For a relaxing stay in the pretty rolling countryside of Tuscany, you can’t do better than this charming apartment. It’s on the estate of a restored 18th-century farmhouse, sharing lush gardens and a heated plunge pool. The apartment boasts views of the surrounding scenery from large windows, and blends rustic charm with modern comfort – it’s a dreamy home-from-home. Florence is only thirty minutes away by car, and you’ll be even closer to the charming town of Scarperia.

Keen cooks will love the modern chef's kitchen for preparing alfresco suppers – though if you feel like dining out, the nearby village of Volpaia and the market town of Radda are both just a short drive away. You will need to hire a car to get around here, and the drive will often be hilly and uneven.

For a taste of authentic Tuscan living, this holiday home is a great choice. This apartment is one of six, renovated from a 15th-century structure by a historically conscious architect. The result of the renovation is an apartment that boasts classic Tuscan design with modern amenities and comfort – you can dine beneath wooden beams and stay cool thanks to the terracotta tiles. 

Outside, a pretty patio boasts a wood-fired pizza oven and alfresco seating. After a day spent in the sunshine, it’s delightful to sit in the shade of the trees and sip local wine while the aroma of pizza fills the air. 

This is a restful home on the outskirts of the village of Brenna, which is just five minutes away on foot. If you need to cool down, you might stroll five minutes to Stazione Balneare Merse where you can swim from the river beach. Of course, the apartment is also in a great location for exploring Tuscany, whether you fancy touring the vineyards or seeing the galleries and museums of the cities. It takes twenty minutes to drive to Siena, making it a perfect day trip. 


A Rustic Reverie 

In the green hills of Mugello, this villa offers the peace and tranquillity of the countryside but is just a forty-minute drive from Florence. Head to Italy’s capital of culture to explore the endless collections of the Ufizzi and dine overlooking the Ponte Vecchio. 

The home itself is traditionally stone-built, with the wooden ceilings on show, an old hearth in the dining room and the farm’s well still on display. Sprawling grounds house a swimming pool with a view over the rolling hills beyond, and a rustic-style loggia for outdoor dining – perfect when you're serving something cooked with fresh vegetables straight from the home's veggie patch. The stone-built, wood-fired barbecue is ideal for summer evenings. 

Apart from Tuscan farmhouse tradition, inside you’ll find some vintage touches like a wireless radio from the early 20th century, and antique furnishings. The old kitchen has been preserved with museum-like care (with a traditional bread over that still works), but the modern kitchen is a sleek, professional affair with slate-grey units and a huge island at its core. 

The town of Scarperia e San Piero is a four-minute drive away to stock up on supplies and there’s even a country restaurant just behind this home if you don’t fancy driving.

This former hunting lodge was once used by the wealthy and powerful Medici family. Steeped in history, it sits in the green hills of the Florentine Mugello, with its own large gardens surrounded by vineyards. There are remnants of the past everywhere, with ancient beamed ceilings, archways and tiled floors, but it's been carefully brought up to date with an eclectic mix of vintage and modern furnishings. And need we point out those fabulous chandeliers in some of the bedrooms? Take the sweeping steps down to the pool or pull up a lounger amid the scented flowers and lemon trees. Walking in the garden here, you’ll also find an area dedicated to aromatic herbs – the perfect addition to a Tuscan lunch in the dining area under a wisteria-covered pergola. It's just a short drive to the freshwater oasis of Lake Bilancino and a day trip to Florence is no more than forty minutes away by car.

Enjoying a panoramic position in the rolling Tuscan hills, this traditional villa is surrounded by beautiful countryside. Having undergone careful restoration, many of this home's original features are still intact, so you can expect terracotta floor tiles, vaulted ceilings and a working fireplace. A trip to Montelupo Fiorentino is highly recommended. The Medieval hilltop town has an air of old-world ambiance, thanks to castles and churches that date back to the Middle Ages. Wander around the colourful streets lined with pastel-stuccoed buildings or pay a visit to the archeological museum to learn more about the area's rich past.

When you get home after a busy day, fire up the barbecue and tuck into an alfresco feast on the patio. Be sure to pick up a bottle of local wine (Montelupo is known for its quality Chianti wine) and then jump in the hot tub to relax and watch a spectacular Tuscan sunset.
